Does Disney's vacation insurance cover hurricanes?

We're looking at booking for fall and I can't decide if we should pay extra for the Disney vacation insurance. I thought it might be a good idea because of hurricanes, but I don't even know if they'd cover that or not.

Anyone know?

I'll be there in September, and I booked thru AAA with insurance. I asked about weather and was told that it does not cover weather. We still did the insurance because with kids you can never be sure what will happen.

Not sure about booking thru Disney, but this is what we were told by AAA. Hope that helps some! :thumbsup2

It should because people from the west coast are not used to hurricanes! :teeth:

When I was booking my trip I was debating on whether or not to buy the insurance (because of the possibility of hurricanes in Sept when I'll be there), I jumped into that chat thingy that pops up on the booking page and asked the CM on the other end "What would happen if a hurricane decided to rip thru Disney the week of my trip?". She answered "Buy the insurance so you won't have to worry about it". Then I asked "Ok, but what if I don't buy the insurance and the parks are closed or whatever, what happens then? Am I just out $2000?" And she replied "It would be dealt with on a case to case basis. The best way to protect your vaction investment would be to buy the insurance, and that's the best answer I can give you."

So, I'm going to assume that yes it does cover it.

Have you read the policy? I booked through AAA and bought the insurance because I was told it DOES cover weather.

I booked thru my TA and she just automatically got the insurance for me. She told me the reason is with it being prime time hurricane season you want to protect yourself. So in answer to your question yes the Disney insurance covers hurricanes.

Please read the fine print carefully. I was told that in order for the insurance to cover, Disney has to shut down specifically for the Hurricane. Not because the policy holder did not feel secure. Did Disney shut down any time during last years hurricane-fest?
I would ask specifically who is making the judgement call. Does it have to be a specific category? (cat 1 usually doesn't shut much down) Does any one know?

Now I'm sooooo confused! DH and I booked a trip for September on the free dining. We put our $200 deposit down... we need to pay in full by August 10th (we're using our Disney Visa). HOWEVER, I was under the understanding that if we cancelled our trip within 48 hours of leaving, we would only be out the $200 deposit- and would be refunded the remainder. Am I wrong? When I booked and they asked me about the insurance I opted out thinking... "why spend $160 for sure on the insurance... when I know I'm only possibly out the $200 if we have to cancel on short notice"??? Any info would be appreciated.

I feel the same as ElleBelle. :confused3
Can anyone tell me the cancellation policy or link me to it?

the AAA agent i just talked to said no coverage for hurricanes...she did say sometimes you can get a refund from disney based on park closing and evacuation orders.....

I live on the gulf of mexico and after last year- it's on my mind...don't want to live life scared but turn 40 sept 16th and would love to be at disney but may postpone to dec just to be safe! (but I sure would love to wear that bday pin you get at city hall... :teeth: )

I remember reading one insurance policy and it say air service had to be shutdown for at least 24 hours to cover the airline tickets.

We normally don't buy trip insurance, but for this one, we did (NOT thru Disney BTW!! Went thru insuremytrip.com and bought my own policy where I could clearly see the details, not thru some vague "Oh, sure, it probably covers that..." CM schpiel, and it was $20 less than what Disney wanted me to pay.) for several different reasons. If one of our flights is delayed 5 hrs, we're covered for food, hotels, rentals. If an airport is shut down for 24 hrs, we are covered for the whole trip. If our bags get lost, we're covered $100/day/person. If we do have to cancel for some other reason (within their policy, of course), the whole trip is covered. And we both just feel a lot more secure about going during hurricane season with that extra assurance.

Even if you're not flying, there may be some other reason you can't get to your vacation. Or what if you're there and for whatever reason you can't get home (fluke car accident or something)?

Our policy was $94 for the four of us... way better than $160 and still better than the $119 Disney wanted me to pay. We insured the trip for $4K, even tho it's not costing us that much (re-planning the trip for some other time of the year would tho!). That was actually a tip I got from the Unofficial Guide.... Price the policy for how much you're spending, and then raise the amount of the policy to the highest amount you can before the premium changes. The premium for the policy was exactly the same for $3000 as it was for $4000.

Hope that helps!

When we booked our trip through a TA, she told us that that had a meeting, the other TAs and the director in the agency, and all of the TAs were told that anyone traveling to Disney during hurricane season would be required to have the travel insurance. If we can't go because of a hurricane, then we have the option of getting our money back or rebooking the trip. The first year we went (July 2003), it never occured to us that we would be going to Disney/Florida during hurricane season. The only water we encountered was the daily afternoon rain shower.

Which company/plan did you go with, might I ask?. They all differ on insuremytrip and I haven't sorted through them yet but only have 12 days left to figure it out since I paid the deposit yesterday. Thanks!

Most "good" credit cards offer travel benefits. Check out the fine print with your cc's travel insurance. Also, I know when I was reading up on Disney's travel insurance, the fine print mentioned that if you had to cancel for illness, it wouldn't cover pre-existing conditions.

I won't be getting the travel insurance.

The way I understand it you would be covered for trip interruption if a hurricaine hit and it effected your travel through delays or airport closing. Like I told DH yesterday, it does not cover cold feet!

Travelex is the company, TraveLite seems to be the plan and I also lied... I bought it thru quotetravelinsurance.com, not insuremytrip.com, although I shopped at both. I found quotetravelinsurance to be the easier site to comprehend and compare policies, but if I remember the same policy I bought was available thru both sites.

Good luck to you, but I'm a smidge concerned that you might be too late to buy. There is usually a cutoff time before your trip that you have to have purchased by. Either way, DO enjoy your trip!!!!! :woohoo:
