First off, I am glad to hear your son is doing fine. I am also glad to hear how well the cruise line did in the crisis. It just seems so particularly sad when something like that happens during a vacation you have been so eagerly anticipating. We had something similar happen in March of '07.

We were staying in a rental home offsite, but I got a garden wing room at the Contemporary on an AP rate for one night to celebrate my sons 5th borthday. He loves the monorail, and I thought it would be fun for him, as well as provide a convenient location for our MK day.

After checking in that morning we took the walking path to the MK. If anyone is familiar with that route you know it crosses a pretty busy road. Well, my son got so excited when we reached the intersection he ran out into traffic and was hit by a car.

I can't go into much detail without getting really emotional but suffice it to say he was unconscious. EMS responded within minutes (they must have a rig at the MK) and while I traveled with my son, the guest relations manager of the Contemporary drove my husband and 2 other children to the hospital.

At the hospital my husband and I stayed in the ER and CAT scan with my son while the manager from the Contemporary fed and entertained my other children. My son required emergency surgery, and Disney sent another employee to take care of the kids while we waited. This man was amazing. He must have had early childhood education, the kids loved him. He brought them to the playground, played games with them. He truly was a godsend, as we were too worried to entertain them.

Once we knew my son was out of surgery and going to be OK my husband and kids were driven back to the resort while I stayed at the hospital. The put them in a tower Magic Kingdom view room, it had balloons and stuffed Mickeys. They had dinner at Chef Mickeys, and turn down service with cookies and milk. This really helped take their minds off of what they had witnessed that day.

Disney Comped the room, and the manager at the Contemporary told my husband they could stay as long as they needed. This was over spring break week and this particular room must have been very expensive. They only stayed the one night. It just seemed wrong to take advantage YKWIM.

So I guess, yes Disney is a business, and they need to make $$$. But in my opinion, in a crisis the human element of the individual employees comes out and they go above and beyond.

For their part, this incident could have lost them customers. Can you imagine wanting to return to the place you experienced a trauma like this? Well, we have been back twice since then, with another trip planned for Feb. This is due in no small part to the kindness of the employees...and a lot of luck and pixie dust (not to mention the skill of the Neurosurgeon at Arnold Palmer Childrens Hospital...shout out!) for my son.

Oh, but next time we stay at the Contemporary...we will take the monorail to the MK!

Jenn, I'm glad your son is ok. This is the reason why my family goes to WDW every year for vacation. Yes it is a business, but to have CM's like that is truly priceless. I am going to print your post, and the next time someone says to me, " Why on earth are you going to Disney again"? I am going to habd them your poast and say " That's why"! Best Wishes............ Fire

Making money IS why companies exist. They don't exist to create jobs or to do good things for people. Those are good side effects of the money making process. They have a duty to make a profit for their owners (shareholders).

However...

A long time ago, Walt Disney was asked about his business plan. He responded "We make money by making people happy. When we can make them happy, they will watch more of our movies." That philosophy has carried over to the theme park and cruise businesses. It's heartening that Walt Disney's successors still take his philosopy to heart and in your cases in spectacular ways.
Fair Winds.

Why on earth are you posting this on every board? I've seen this, almost verbatim, on the DVC board, family board, community board...and yet it happened 2 years ago. Yeah, it's a "feel good" story, sounds very fantasy-like, but I'm not sure why you chose yesterday to post it all over the place.

BTW, 2 of my kids have had febrile seizures. It's one of the scariest things I've ever witnessed. That's actually part of the reason my radar was up about the multiple postings--had you posted 2 years ago, I probably would have responded with my experiences since I truly understand the horror of watching your little person convulse.

Great stories. We hear enough of the negative. Good to hear the positive side too.

Thanks for posting this! I needed a feel-good story to read. Glad everyone is okay.

Wow, hope your son is doing much better, talk about a scare.
That is very impressive they way they handled it

I'm glad your child is doing fine and you had such a nice experience. My experience hasn't been nearly that wonderful. Though to be fair, it hasn't been all that bad either.

I fell down the stairs in Mexico in the World Showcase shattering my tibia and fibula and fracturing my arm. I was rushed to the ER in Celebration and, later that evening, transported to FL Hospital for surgery. My dh had to BEG for an extra night at SSR. He didn't ask for it to be free, just an extra night as I would not be allowed to travel on the day we had planned to leave. Finally, someone in management intervened and helped us. We didn't have to pay but it was compliments of DVC not Disney. So far Disney has done nothing for us due to my accident other than providing my transport to the ER.

We were assigned a claims agent to whom we are supposed to send information about medical bills we still owe, photos of my surgical scars, etc. We haven't sent that info yet because I am going to have another surgery for a complication due to the accident so we need to include that info. I guess they might show us the magic after all that's turned in to them but who knows? Maybe they aren't so quick to be so wonderful when the patient is an adult. But my kids sure could have used a little magic after seeing their mom seriously injured and taken away on a gurney!

WOW - thank you for sharing your story. It actually has me in tears. I can't wait to share it with my husband, who is still one of those who believes that Disney and all things Disney associated are only about screwing the people for as much money as they possibly can. He raises his eyebrows at me, as if saying "see there?" each year when they raise their prices. Thankfully for me, he understands and supports my Disney addiction and entertains my need to feel the Disney magic as often as possible - even if it means every other week...lol

I hope your son is feeling better. I am so happy to hear that you were all very well taken care of. It is amazing that even big corporations like Disney still remember and appreciate families like yours/mine and others who spend their hard earned money in their parks, stores, resorts, cruise ships, restaurants and more. God Bless

These posts make me proud to be a new DVC member, shareholder, and all around Disney fan.

Thanks for posting, as that's an incredible story! Disney never ceases to amaze me. :worship:

What a nice story. Thanks for sharing. Pixie dust for you!!!! and well wishes for good health for your child.

Wow Jenn,
So glad your son is alright and so nice to hear what Disney did for you all.

This is a great story that SHOULD be shared with everyone. It also points out the importance of trip insurance!! We never purchase it but with four kids (even with NO kids!), it should definitely be given serious thought.

I posted this on several boards because after getting the suggestion to 'share the love' by posting this online, I posted it in a few areas that I thought made sense so many different people could be exposed to it. I know that I don't go into every area of the disboards when I use it, so I figured other busy people might also just go into one or two areas of the site when they come on.

Once again, my purpose was to share the positive experience I had, nothing more. I am shocked at some of the negativity I've seen from posters on these boards since sharing my story. People on various boards have BLAMED ME for inconveniencing other cruise guests for my UNCONSCIOUS SON being taken to the ER, insinuated my stupidity for not purchasing trip insurance and questioning the validity of my entire story. Well, you know what--I only shared this story with the best of intentions. I can't imagine that someone who ever experienced something similar--the trauma of thinking your only child is dead/dying while you are 5 months pregnant--would be as rude and inconsiderate as some of the people on these boards. I have been very upset by all these comments the past few days... and I've had enough. It is a very sad state for our world that there are people out there that are so self-righteous and 'know-it-alls' that they would respond the way they have over the past few days.

To all the well-wishers out there, THANK YOU!! Other posters have shared similar stories in response to mine, and it's been great hearing how Disney is set up to take care of it's customers in crisis.

I am really sorry you got a negative reaction from some people - it seems strange to me too!

Our daughter also had horrible febrile convulsions when she was a toddler. Really, really scary. It's a time when you need all the compassion and good medical care you can get. If I had been onboard your ship, I would have been completely supportive of the Captain's decision to turn the ship around. It would have made me love Disney all the more, as did your story.
