I have found a good flight for us but cannot seem to find what the rules are. In case we have to cancel for some reason do they charge a fee and do they give you a credit for the canceled flights ?

I thought non-refundable meant NO refunds. So no fee, but no money back.

There's no fee to cancel but there is a $150 change fee to use the credit up to 1 year from original purchase date.

Ok so they will give you credit but charge a fee of 150.00 to save it for us for 1 year ?

The fee is subtracted from the credit when you want to use it.

So for example, the fare was $400. You cancel and want to use the credit for another flight. The credit available to use will be $250 ($400-$150). By the way, the $150 fee is per ticket, not per reservation.

You will only be charged a fee if you want to use the nonrefundable ticket at a later date. You can cancel, but unlike SW, you are charged $150 per ticket when you rebook. So, in other words, you lose out and it's probably not worth it to cancel.

It might be worth it to check out the insurance they offer. Not exactly sure what it costs and covers but it may be worth it. We never book a trip without having travel insurance - you never know what could happen at the last minute before you leave and, more importantly if there is an emergency while you are away. For us the peace of mind is worth the added fee.

I wonder how much you've paid in insurance premiums to offset the change fee?

The fee for insurance is 18.85 each person.

So it would take 1 trip out of 8 to be cancelled for breakeven, doesn't seem worth it to me, the definition of a major loss doesn't seem to apply. But everyone has different risk appetites. My guess is the trip insurance money would be better applied to other pieces of insurance that are often underinsured in America (ie. liability or life).

We paid $15/person for the insurance to cover the flight. To me it is well worth paying $60 for the 4 of us vs. $600 in change fees. To the pp that said the money would be better spent on other types of insurance - we have all the insurance we need to cover all liabilities and life - but we are a family that has had to cancel a trip at the last minute due to a parents death so to us traveling with insurance is our peace of mind.

I agree with you---I "self insure" as well for most WDW trips, and if I have to eat a fare, I eat it. It hasn't happened yet.

But, I can imagine some folks for whom the loss of the airfare would be a non-trivial hardship. For those folks, travel insurance (not Delta's, but a "real" one) is wise.
