deciding on a good one. If anything , what do you use, how does it work and how much did it cost? DD is getting on the net big time lately and it's not that we don't trust her, we don't trust the rest of the people and we want to monitor what goes on when she's on the computer. Any ideas?

My DS has been on the internet for 7 years now. He started out with AOL then we switched to a cable line. AOL sent too much smutty E-Mail for my liking. We don't get any of it with our Cable line.
We never put parental controls on. We told him to let one of us know if something came up on his computer that he thought shouldn't be there. We check often, but so far so good!
They really can't do much at all with those parental controls on.

That is exactly the kind of opinions I'm looking for Lynn, we have cable internet . I'm not afraid of where she can get into, lately she has been going on the nick.com forums and I like to know what goes on, she tells me, she knows not to give her address, phone number and stuff like that , I'm afraid of all those child predators out there than anything else. Maybe I'm over reacting but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Kanga - I was researching cable modem routers yesterday and noticed that there are at least a couple of models of Netgear routers that include parental filtering. You can include a list of blocked sites or forbidden words and the router will prevent them from reaching your computer. This is not a perfect solution, but could provide a bit of added security.

I loaded a "snoop" program on our PC soon after I discovered that my son's friends were showing him how to look at adult sites and then clean the history file so that Sue and I would not know where he had been surfing. The kids' PC is out in the open, but in the basement where Sue and I aren't always around. The snoop program was shareware and only about $15. It records a history of sites visited and cannot be erased without knowledge of the program's password. I told both kids that it was mom's rule that if they got caught again, their internet privileges would be gone. Period. No discussion. We also told them to make sure to tell us if they got to a site where they knew that they shouldn't be so that we would know that they weren't sneaking around looking for inappropriate materials.

This approach has worked well so far. But there is no surefire way to automatically keep all offensive content off your computer (unless you want to restrict website access to a very limited list of site that does NOT include a search engine). Your best bet is to monitor your DD's use and do your best to keep the crap away from her as long as possible.

I've been looking for a program that would keep my daughter from erasing the history; this sounds like what I've been looking for. What is the name of the program, and where did you get it?
Thanks.

:bounce: bumping for someone maybe with more suggestions...thanks!

We have Norton Internet Security. It's an anti-virus, firewall, and it blocks adult sites, as well as other categories (gambling) that you don't want your kids into.

We use bsafe online and also use if for our email. I'm not sure what it costs (DH in charge of that) but it works well. It doesn't seem to have blocked anything we need or use. Good Luck.
