Does anyone think it's tacky to have a garage sale on Good Friday?

Typically, if a garage sale is on Friday around here, it is later in the day than a Saturday yard sale. That people on the way home from work will be out. Also if you advertise then people will know it is going on. I would have the sale from like 12-5 or something like that. It is not bad taste to have a yard sale on Friday.

Not in bad taste at all..... and around here Friday is THE day for the die-hard garage-salers.

Good luck with your sale!:thumbsup2

I think it is fine, you'll have your religious people who won't be out that day, but otherwise you'll have your norms I believe.

No!

I am religious.......myself.........but everyone needs to make $$$= do it!
Have fun and enjoy your yardsale, hope you make lots of $$$$ for your trip and enjoy!!!:goodvibes

4/10 for 2 weeks to SUNNY FL! :cool1: :thumbsup2 :3dglasses :woohoo:

I say go for it!! I have to say that I do not know what Good Friday is. *don't flame me!!* I am not religious at all. I hope you make a lot of Disney money with your yardsale! !

I went to a Catholic school and have never heard it should be a day of mourning. Maybe I just wasn't listening. :rolleyes1

It would never occur to me that it would be in poor taste to have a garage sale, or go shopping, or do any of my normal activities.

I think you'd have more luck on Holy Thursday. If you have one of those electric foot bath things, I bet it would sell real quick!

No flames at all, just thought if there were others reading this thread who also don't know what Good Friday is, it's the Friday before Easter (when Christians celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus from the cross). Good Friday is the day when Christians commemorate Jesus' death on the cross and focus on what his sacrifice meant. It's called "Good" Friday because without his sacrifice (according to Christian theology), we would have no salvation.

I'm not that old and I remember all the stores, banks, everything being closed on Good Friday. As a Catholic, it's a day of fasting and prayers and many go to church to participate in the Stations of the Cross (recalling different events while Jesus suffered for us).

For me, Good Friday is not about how much money I can make, or save or spend or whatever, but an important date to reflect on my faith.

Of course, I understand that not everyone's a Christian or religious, but the OP was asking if anyone thought it would be tacky and I answered honestly.

I think it's a bad idea for several reasons:

1. Easter is related to the equinoxal storms, so we often have a cold snap or other bad weather just before Easter; thus, you're very likely to have bad weather during your sale -- never a good thing.
2. Many people go out of town on Easter weekend, and they're not going to be focused on yard sales. Those who are staying home will be thinking about Easter baskets, etc. It just seems like poor timing -- I think you're cutting your customer base.
3. And, yes, I do think a holy day is a tacky choice for a yard sale.

Do you think it's tacky to go to the grocery or out to eat on Good Friday?

If people engage in any type of commerce on Good Friday, then how can they call a garage sale more inappropriate on that day than on any other?

I think it's cavalier to go to restaurants or shopping on Easter, or any other holiday, but many people do.

Sincerely,
a good Catholic girl

No, I don't think it's tacky. Everything is open around here on Good Friday. Lots of people shop, go out to eat, live normal lives, etc.

Now whether you lose customers because they are traveling out of town, busy cooking, etc., I don't know. I wouldn't not have it because of religious reasons though. I'm not that old either, ;) and I don't remember stores/banks being closed on Good Friday and I KNOW they are not closed now. :)

I do not think that it is in poor taste. Plenty of retailers are open on Good Friday. Plus not everyone in this world is Christian and recognizes Good Friday. Heck, I'm Christian and would stop at a good looking garage sale on Good Friday :)

yep:thumbsup2

I think that you might not get the traffic you want if the people that think is is "tacky" dont come : );)

As another good Catholic (convert) girl, Good Friday is a day of fasting for me, so going out to eat would be pointless. I don't shop on either Good Friday or Easter, since that's not what it's about for me. However, we usually take my MIL out to dinner to her favorite restaurant on Easter. Since Easter is a day of celebration, I don't see any problem with eating out then.

If you watch The Passion of the Christ, you may feel differently about having a garage sale on a day that a lot of people reflect on Christ's death.

Yes, I know he rose 2 days later, but he was a human and he certainly suffered.

I understand where you are going with this comment.

Its kinda like working on a Sunday. Christians look down upon people who work on Sundays instead of taking off... but its those same Christians who leave the church sunday morning and head out to Red Lobster to eat and then to the movie theater to catch a flick and practically force people to hold jobs--

I just want you to know that I understand where you are coming from..

And in my opinion-- to each their own. I, personally, wouldnt hold a garage sale on Good Friday, but I would be judgemental against someone who did...:flower3:
