Well, you know, they do suck out all your brain cells!;)

Okay....as far as that list goes...I believe #9 applies to our family. Disney is a religion of sorts for us!!!! And I do take my dd out of school and as long as her grades are good, I will continue to do so. I have yet to see a negative impact on her schooling. She misses school for no other reason than vacation or illness. Don't like it? Then don't do it. But don't judge me or my choices.

I haven't responded to this in days because it is worthless to discuss anything with someone who is so all knowing.

However, I find it patently offensive to imply that a hurricane hitting a state (that has already had two hurricanes in the last month) is "Justice" for someone pulling their kids out of school. That is just sick. If you are a product, mikeymars, of someone who never missed a day of school, I think I will start pulling my kid out more often. :jester:

Our ISD policy:
A student shall be given credit for a class only if the student has been in attendance 90 percent of the days the class is offered, unless an attendance committee appointed by the Board gives the student credit because there were extenuating circumstances for the absences.
It is not specified anywhere what qualifies as excused or unexcused. If a student misses more then 10%of classes (18 days) the the student and parent have to go before an "attendance board":
In deciding whether or not the student is eligible for credit, the attendance committee shall consider documentation of completed alternative learning activities. Students who have lost credit because of unexcused absences may regain credit by fulfilling the requirements established by the attendance committee and/or the building administrator. Students who have unexcused absences shall be required to make up the time and the work within ten calendar days.
Some things the committee take into concideration:
The committee shall consider whether or not the student has completed assignments, mastered the essential knowledge and skills, and maintained passing grades in the course or subject.

The committee may impose any of the following conditions for receiving credit lost because of excessive absences:

Completing tutorials.
Completing an individual paper or oral reports.
Attending Saturday school.
Completing additional assignments to cover work missed.
Performing community or campus service.
Attending summer school.
Taking an examination to earn credit.

We receive no letter stating "Your kid can't miss more then 5 (or any other number) of days during any specific time".

I also went to high school in this same district and I missed 16 days in one semester during my Senior year. My mom would write a note for all my absences. I rarely ever had a dr. note, but I kept my grades up and graduated with no problems at all.

My ds missed 11 days last year over the course of the school year and he passed and no one asked me a single question, but they know he has bad asthma and allergies so all of his absences were excused with a note from me.

I can't speak for other school districts, but they certainly aren't tightening up the attendance policy around here. All I have to do is get his work form his teacher and write a note to the principal. It's that easy. Man, we are going to have SO MUCH FUN!!

Just thought I'd help out a little here:

sybarite \SIB-uh-ryt\, noun:
A person devoted to luxury and pleasure; a voluptuary.

Sybarite comes from Latin Sybarita, from Greek Sybarites, from Sybaris, an ancient Greek city in southeastern Italy noted for the luxurious, pleasure-seeking habits of many of its inhabitants.

...so those of us who remove our children from the noble pursuit of academics in a bold yet transparently selfish quest for pixie dust are revealing ourselves as ...... Robin Leach?

Well, good for you. I was posting an example from a system that DOES, to show that everyone doesn't live in areas with poorly managed schools (e.g. ones without something as BASIC as a published attendance policy). Then again, thanks to our President, that universe is slowly but surely shrinking - despite the best efforts of the N.E.A.

Yawn. Next....

I notice you often quote other poster and you always seem to have a response. I have yet to see you quote and or respond to your comments about hurricane Ivan hitting Florida. Remember? Maybe there is justice?????????hmmmmmmmmm

Hmmm....

....one readily gets the sense that the "Disney before school" gang here is made up of people who -- while more than willing to jump on the thread "bandwagon" (where they can anonymously brag to a sympathetic crew that they, too, have screwy priorities, and enjoy ganging up on the one person who dares to challenge them) -- probably don't broadcast that message to their neighbors and co-workers.

Yes, it's easy to go onto a board crammed with the Disney-fixated and be proud of the fact you, too, yank Muffy and Buffy out every year to go to WDW. That's very easy. What is a LOT harder to do is to brag about that to the other parents waiting with their kids at the local school bus stop. Good heavens - they probably aren't as obsessed with a certain place in Florida, so one can't assume they'll be sympathetic to your "in session" disappearances if they knew what the agenda behind them was.

And the opposition reads this, each member is grudgingly admitting that to themselves (even though they'll deny it in their hysterical rebuttals)....heh heh heh.....

By the way, what it is even harder to do is to stand as an individual against a gang of the mouse-obsessed petty bourgeoisie. But hey, some of us actually enjoy challenges.

And am encouraged by the people who - over the last several days -- have sent me those PMs thanking me for doing just that (yes, many but not all are teachers). I think they're enjoying the fact that one person can take on the petty boureoisie.. and drive them absolutely nuts.

>>I have yet to see you quote and or respond to your comments about hurricane Ivan hitting Florida.<<

Re-read said post. I didn't make any comments stating Ivan was going to hit anything.

I simply pointed out that yes, a certain sybarite might indeed run into the weather disruption she was concerned about on her "field trip." There were thirteen subsequent posts on this thread after I made that point, but only two -- yep, count 'em, TWO -- bothered to raise issues with it (both in contextless soundbite fashion). Not exactly the sort of substantive critical mass justifying a response (of course, now that I've pointed that out, the uncreative opposition will all immediately jump on that bandwagon, stating they all "meant" to respond to it earlier. Yes, certainly, of course you did....)

...sigh....per my original list, the sybarites are so....predictable.....pirate:

Next.

How's your bridge?

Bourgeoisie? How declasse to resort to insulting someone based on their social status.

Don't worry, you haven't driven me or anyone else nuts as of yet. I find your misplaced arrogance a comical respite.

I generalize about groups, not individuals. And any"insult" I've aimed at the latter is no worse than the denigrating terms people have thrown at me in personal attacks (let's see, in just the past few days, the lynch mob has resorted to calling me "sick," "evil," "nasty," yada yada yada). Hmmmm...what was the old saying...."they can put it out, but they can't take it"

Given I've been also been told in PMs that I'm the sole voice of reason here, it's nice to know I please audiences on both sides.:teeth:

I am not ashamed to say that we go in early December for financial reasons.... I am a single mom with a DD9 (honor roll student)...... This is the time of year I can afford to go!

 Aren't there other times that have good rates at WDW?

Like summer?

Ah, yes, the infamous PMs in support of an issue. Well that's nice that you get the support you need in private. I have gotten numerous PMs in support of my position as well. There, are we even?

Bottom line, only the parent and the teacher can really make this call, you do what you think is best for your child, and I will make those decisions about my child.

Excellent point - summer is NOT some screamingly expensive time at WDW. As a useful "acid test" example of this (e.g., staying ON SITE at a top-of-the-line Disney property), here are the weeknight point costs for a standard view studio at my DVC home resort of BWV for various times of the year in 2005. Ones that occur during periods when many/most school systems are likely to have weeks out of session are emphasized in bold:

"absolute rock bottom" times (9 points a night):

All of January
All of September
All of October
All of November

"middle end deal" times (11 points a night):

ALL of February
ALL of June
ALL of July
ALL of August

All of May
Late November period right before Thanksgiving

"big ticket season" times (highest cost, 16 points a night)

Second half of April
Christmas/New Year's Holiday period at end of December

Bottom line: does one save some money (on room) by going in October or January? Yes, but the savings aren't massively below what one would pay going anytime starting in May through the ENTIRE summer.

Which brings us back to a point I made earlier in this thread: the "yank 'em out" crowd isn't really interested in saving money. Their real agenda is to avoid crowds and heat. I can understand why (no one likes those conditions), but laugh at those who imply the ONLY way to have a good time at the MK is when the park is empty and the temperature is 54 degrees. That mindest only comes from those who don't know how to plan effectively.

We last visited WDW in late August of 2001. WIth careful planning (PS dining set up as far in advance as possible, itinerary in each park carefully designed, early entry to the parks and effective use of FastPass), we did the MK, Epcot, MGM and AK, and over the course of nine days NEVER stood in lines for more than 2-3 minutes. Repeat, NEVER. NEVER. NEVER. In fact, without using Fastpass even had REPEAT WALK ONS at attractions such as Space Mountain, Tower of Terror, Test Track, R&RC, Pirates and Jungle Cruise. Part of the reason for that was the fact the parks were OPEN LATE, UNLIKE what one experiences in periods like the fall.

Was it hot? Yes, so we scheduled pool breaks early mid afternoon every day. That's what the pools are for, people....

Yes...and Thanksgiving and Christmas too. We're checking in December 25 and got a big discount for our entire stay. We got a very good rate for Thanksgiving as well. The "I can only afford Disney when school is in session" argument really doesn't wash. Nor does the "WDW is educational" argument. I have to applaud the parents on this thread that come out and said they pull their kids out of school to avoid the heat and crowds. A nice honest answer. :D It makes it less crowded for me when I go during the school breaks and holidays.

The nice thing about living here is not having to take the kids out of school for a WDW vacation. And since we start in August and have spring break end of March and get out in May, we don't share school breaks with the rest of the county.

The only time we need to consider missing school is to attend family functions in other parts of the country - and then we have to decide if a wedding, funeral, baptism or reunion is worth it..... So far we've been lucky and two weddings were held here at WDW, the only baptism was ours and no one has died. (knock on wood!)

Can't be 100% sure unless we do a count. At any rate, I strongly suspect the reason certain people who agree with me have kept that private is because they don't care to get personally attacked by the "don't take school so seriously" mob.

Depends one the school system. As I have shown, the trend is for well run ones to have specific written attendance policies (most of which heavily limit or completely remove family vacation as a excused absence) and to be seriously focused on 100% compliance.

In that situation, the decision is taken out of the hands of the parents and teachers. Ergo, increasingly people are finding they can no longer do things like in the "old days, where they negotiated secret, special indivdual "deals." Every student and family gets treated exactly the same, which is the way it should be.

Then post a poll. Everyone here can vote anonymously without fear of being flamed. :D
