I was just thinking about this and realized I haven't put tinsel on my tree in several years. I used to love the look of it when I was younger and still living with my parents, but I'm not sure I like it on my tree anymore.

Now that I'm married and we have our own tree, I have collected many different whimsical, fun ornaments and I think tinsel might detract from being able to see the ornaments. When I was young, it didn't matter so much because the ornaments were so decrepid they weren't that exciting to look at anyway!

I have seen several pictures of trees here on the DIS, and I can't recall seeing any that have tinsel, though I could be mistaken. So, does anyone here use the silver tinsel? I'm not talking about the garland, but the tinsel that comes loose in a box and you have to put them individually on the branches?

I think I will make this a poll!!

My tree is NOT complete until it has tinsel. I think it makes the tree!!

My Christmas tree is done in mostly blue and I have shimmery blue tinsel on it.

I am not a fan of tinsel, and I would not have it anyway because of my cats - it can make them very sick if they ingest it.

naw...we stopped tinsel years ago...for a few reasons.

1. The dogs ate it. (but then we had Shiney...uh...poop in the back yard, which made it easy to find...but still, can't be good for them)
2. It's a nightmare to take OFF the tree (especially if you have an artificial tree - then it all HAS to come off before you pack it up.)
3. You'll be vaccuuming it up until Easter (and then you'll vaccuum up Easter Grass until 4th of July)

We don't have tinsel because we have a fake tree (because of DH's allergies) and it would take toooooooo long to get the tinsel off when we take it down.

When I was little, Santa would put extra tinsel on the tree on Christmas Eve - when we woke up Christmas Day you could barely see the tree for all the tinsel! It was a magical memory.

Never have. We have a fake tree (because of allergies) and a zoo of pets (1 dog and 3 cats). It is bad for the pets to eat it and unfortunately they love to eat it.

I used to in the past until I realized why my dog was always having a hard time going to the bathroom around holidays.

No; we only put a garland of beads on the tree. It looks very pretty. My dad has this tinsel on his tree:

It's reusable twisted metal; it makes the tree look nice and sparkly but the pets won't eat it.

I don't put tinsel on our tree-Santa does! We decorate it and then on Christmas eve Santa finishes it with the tinsel~

Nope, also because of the cat.

Same here, I used a lot of tinsel on my tree every year and then we adopted a cat - love the cat but I miss the tinsel.

We did when I lived at home. When I got my own place and my own tree, I didn't. I used to love the look, but not anymore (I do use gold garland though!). Plus it's a pain in the butt to get off an artificial tree (which is what we have). I have a pre-lit tree and a ton of beautiful ornamates, so it looks great without it. And we also put candy canes on the tree, I don't know why but it just adds a certain something to the tree that nothing else does.

Candy canes! Thanks for reminding me! We did that a couple times and loved the look but I had forgotten about it. I have to run out and buy some multicolored ones now!

Do you mean the kind that you sort of "throw" on or the kind that you wrap around the tree?

If I do, the cats get a hold of it and eat it and then... well it hangs from somewhere gross... I now avoid tinsel.
