For 3 or 4 trips, DH and I would catch this wonderful guy singing, playing the guitar.....telling jokes. He did alot of James Taylor stuff. He would play in the bar (bottom level) of the "then" Empress Lilly. Anyone remember? Is he still around WDW? We would love to see him again......some of Disney's best entertainment!:D

Are you thinking of John Charles? We haven't seen or heard about him for a few years now. We enjoyed him a lot.

I know that after John Charles left (or was moved from) Empress Lily that he played at POFQ for a while, and then he again relocated to the Diamond Horseshoe Review... Not sure where he might be now.

I'm not sure.......I think it was John Charles. That rings a bell with me. Thanks for coming up with the name, I sure would love to know if he is still at Disney.:D

In the early 80s and through the mid-90s John Charles was a frequent entertainer at the WDW resorts. Back when there were just the Polynesian and the Contemporary resorts around the Seven Seas Lagoon, the resort lounges often had late night entertainment and we always enjoyed spending an evening with John Charles in the Coconino Cove (at the Contemporary) or the Tangaroa Terrace (at the Polynesian). Later, when WDW stopped offering late night entertainment at the resorts, John Charles could frequently be found performing at the Baton Rouge Lounge on the Empress Lilly. It was not quite as convenient as having him appear at your resort, but always worth the effort to catch his show. His unique blend of contemporary music, humor, & audience interaction was very popular with the adult crowd at WDW.

Later, when the Empress Lilly became Fulton's Crab House, John Charles played at the Diamond Horseshoe Review for a while, as "Sheriff John Charles" (I think). Other posters here at the DIS have mentioned seeing him perform on the Disney Magic (Disney Cruise Line) in 2002 at the Rockin Bar D. I haven't heard if he is still doing that, but he does have a web site if you want to contact him.

John Charles is actually a stage name. His full name is John Charles Vasse, and his web site can be found at http://www.johncharles.com/ . Besides WDW, he has also performed for many other companies. Two CDs are currently offerred for sale on his web site, one of which is a live recording of a 1996 performance at the Diamond Horseshoe. [Other than being a big fan, I have no interest in promoting this site, but thought you might like to know about it.]
