Does ANYONE regret buying into DVC???

One problem I find is that I plan and confirm with family members about going on these trips. Then, about 6 mos. before, someone can't go, or they don't know if they might have to cancel. (Hubby's work, young adult kids not planning at all!)They forget how much planning is involved, and expense with airfare, tickets. I got thru the big family trip, but now its just gonna be me and the DH for awhile!:goodvibes

Been there done that! Some folks are just not timeshare folks. You have to have some advance planning to make these things work.

I am an OKW owner since Oct of 2000. My contract is good until 2042. My only complaint so far regards how Disney has handled the contract extension offer. I can understand that Disney has the right to sell OKW contracts ending in 2057. I do not understand why those of us with contracts ending in 2042 had to have our deeds amended. Why not just leave our contracts alone? If Disney had a legal requirement to amend our deeds I believe they could have explained the reason for the action. Otherwise I have been very happy with my OKW membership and DVC in general.

I had to chuckle when I read your post. We have Marriott weeks as well as DVC and I have to tell you that DVC is much more flexible and easy to manage.
I totally agree. I will be honest in saying that I didn't do too much research before purchasing DVC. First, BIL/SIL had been DVC owners for about 12 years when we purchased, so I had my own personal DVC experts! ;) And, a good friend at work owns the typical 1 week, 2-BR, week number ## in Hawaii. I know that my BIL/SIL have used their DVC for all it's worth! My friend, on the other hand, has let his week go unused many times in Hawaii. So when we started looking, it was pretty easy. I know that other timeshares are moving to a more flexible plan like DVC, but overall, DVC allowed us to go when we wanted, in the size room we wanted and would allow trades if we truly wanted to trade. Still very glad we purchased! :cloud9:

I owe 3 different timeshares companies. I seem to understand two of them fairly well, and one not so well. DVC seems to work well for us. I do wish the Dues weren't due in Jan, but... I sure do enjoy going to disney and not having a room bill. :goodvibes

That is something I hear alot. We have never let a week go unused but htat is why we bought where we wouldn't mind staying, just like DVC. There is a learning curve to all. We didn't research the first purchase but I really studied DVC for about 8 months before we purchased. I think if I had to sum it up, DVC is more flexible to my needs while with my other ts, I have to be more flexible to make it work. I can pretty much go during a window that I set but I have to be flexible on where. I usually have a list of desired locations and check them often beginning 1 year in advance.

It is most likely a combination of three elements:

1. How the program was originally set up -- a deeded right to use timeshare

2. Florida timeshare laws

3. Florida real estate laws

They had to extend everyone and then have those who did not want it quit claim their interest back to the developer.

I had to chuckle when I read your post. We have Marriott weeks as well as DVC and I have to tell you that DVC is much more flexible and easy to manage. We have to start planning a year in advance with our MVC. If we don't use it, we have to deposit it or lose it. We get a 2 bedroom even if it is just DH and I. Seems like a waste. We even had a 3 bedroom for just the 2 of us - others couldn't make it. With some of the trades, like Hawaii, we were told it takes 18 months to come thru. We were lucky, it didn't, but we traded our 2 bedroom for a studio. (We were able to upgrade but that's another story) II is just as expensive to trade into the US and $125 or so to trade abroad. You can trade thru II for cruises but you always owe money in addition to giving them your week; you are trading lodging for food and lodging. In some cases you give them your week for free!:scared1:

I think there are ups and downs to every timeshare. They all take some advance planning but I am amazed that people are still getting stays for the summer and fall. I'm already thinking what week I will reserve with MVC for summer 09!! I need more experience with the point system but I think it is more flexible and user friendly. But maybe that is because I found the Disboards to teach me the ins and outs before I bought. With MVC, I fumbled with it for years before I found TUG which helped so much.

I agree with you. We also own MVCI and find it much less flexible than our DVC. But it is also a trusted brand with a quality product and service that better fits our needs for non-Disney holidays.

We do not use DVC for anything now other than DVC resorts. The value is not there for using it as a trader, either internally within the Disney organization or through II.

Yes, we love our membership, but to me, here are some of the downsides:
  • Dues come right after Christmas! Nothing like getting the AmEx bill and a dues statement!!! :scared1:
  • Trading out through II isn't as easy as it sounded in the sale's pitch. I haven't tried, but my SIL/BIL do it all of the time. It's not as easy as, "Hey, I want to go to Hawaii, so I'll deposit my points into II and pick a week!"
  • It now costs $95 to book anything other than DVC resorts. The $95 is even charged if you book other WDW hotels (e.g., Contemporary, Polynesian, etc.).
  • It's more difficult for members who can't plan months in advance.
  • Cruises and Adventures by Disney require a ton of points. Though they are advertised, we've never wanted to use up all of our points for 3 years to take advantage of them.

With that said, what Disney does do is allow extreme flexibility (e.g., any week, any size room, multiple DVC resort locations without "trading out," etc.). Its resale value is pretty steady as well, so if you buy and realize the investment wasn't right for you, you won't lose your shirt selling it. If you think you'd like to travel to WDW ever 1 to 3 years, then buy enough points for those vacations. DVC allows you to bank and/or borrow, which can give you the flexibility to travel when you want. I wouldn't purchase DVC to mostly trade out and go to WDW every once in a while. There are other timeshares that will serve you better if those are your plans.

Dues after Christmas....I took care of that and went to monthly debits for no additional charge.
I did my big family trip with all of the scheduling headaches surrounding them, now I don't feel guilty and will be vacationing with the hubby for awhile...
You have to pay a fee for trades with other timeshares, so I don't feel this is an unrealistic expense. DVC makes my hubby take a vacation, and for that alone I feel its well worth it!!:rotfl2:

I have absolutely no regrets about my DVC purchase and multiple add-ons and I enthusiastically recommend it to those that meet certain criteria. DVC is not for everyone, but can be great for certain families.

Thanks for the explanation Jim, I just wish Disney had been more forth coming in explaining why they had to handle the contract extension in the manner that they chose, rather than leaving us to search for answers from good people such as yourself. The DVC method of handling the contract extension leaves OKW 2042 owners to wonder at what DVC is really up to. By giving no explanation with the legal paperwork that amends the OKW deeds, DVC is not treating current contract owners in an appropriate manner. I know several owners who are not impressed with the way the OKW contract extension offer was handled. We all have "contracts" and feel that we deserved a better explanation from DVC. It is bad public relations for DVC in my opinion. I have been happy with my ownership interest in terms of it being a good vacation plan for my family. My advice to anyone buying into DVC is to be fully aware that your contract makes you give up all voting rights at the annual meeting to the DVC board, and that DVC can and will change your contract whenever it desires to do so. A more honest explanation would have been a better advertisement for DVC. Don't let the Disney "magic" keep you from looking at a DVC purchase as a business transaction as well as a vacation experience. Thanks again for the information.

That is exactly how we feel. We like both for different reasons and we have gotten some really good trades with MVC but we have never traded to anything but Marriott. We have one week that we always occupy and one that we have used totally for trading. Our DVC will be for DVC stays only.

We've only owned for a year, and our only regret so far is that we didn't buy in for more points. DH wants to add on already!! But he's waiting patiently for Contemporary.

I've been trying to avoid this, because I like getting the points on my credit card. I may have to break down, though!!! Seriously, those two bills back to back come in along with our property taxes and I've got BIG BUCKS going out the door. For those of you who have watched game shows, I feel like I've been whammied!!!

Hope you have a great time with DH!!! :cloud9: As for the fee, I don't mind the fee except for trading within Dis. Mind you, have never done it, but it bothers me if I want to stay at another WDW hotel or go on a cruise, I have to pay $95. I would have thought exchange fees within Disney resorts (regardless of DVC or not) would have been waived. Not the end of the world, but seems wrong to me. :headache: If that's the worst thing I have to be griped about, life is sure good, huh??? :rolleyes1

We definitely do not regret our purchase or any of our add on's. Reasons we bought in in the first place:

1) Fell in LOVE with Disney from our first visit with our kids when they were 6.
2) DH never took vacations (my secret reason), and being that he loves WDW, I figured it would be forced vacations for him - and I was right:goodvibes
3) We LOVE WDW
4) DH won't fly, and since this is a fav vacation destination and a place we can drive to, it makes perfect sense.
5)We LOVE WDW
6) I will fly, but I am not as independent as I like to think I am;) , and don't like to stray too far from home without the family - a 2 hour 50 minute flight is quick and easy for me to do with a friend for just a few nights (so I'm not away from my fam longer than I'm comfortable with)
and I'm a WDW fanatic (completely obsessed if you ask my fam and
friends :confused3 )
7) Everytime we go someplace else, we get the bug to go back to WDW
We KNOW this is a place we'll want to come to again and again and give to our kids (now 19) who also LOVE WDW, and to our future grandchildren.
8) Hilton Head :woohoo: ! Love it, going back as often as possible
9) My children will start to travel on their own soon, DVC California, DVC Hawaii, and Paris, etc, etc gives them more options than WDW, as well as Disney - which the LOVE too:cool1:
10) It's gorgeous there WL,AKV, Crescent Lake at night, etc. and can be different vacations with every trip because there is so much to do, and so much we haven't done yet!

I think we are very fortunate people to have this, no regrets for us!

I purchased at Old Key West back in 1995. At that time the resort was called Disney Vacation Club and was the only one built. Along with ownership you received length of stay park hoppers with each stay. The number of passes depended on the unit size. I certainly got a bargain. I have since added on at Saratoga Springs. I rarely have difficulty getting the reservations I want. I usually go there in February, April, September and November. I just got back a few weeks ago and stayed at Beach Club Villas. I'm booked for Boarkwalk in September. The decision to purchase this back in '95 was probably one of the best decisions I ever made.

I hope that we're saying the same thing 10+ years from now! :goodvibes My BIL/SIL purchased the same time you did, and they are the reason we purchased. They got the same great deal with the passes!!! :thumbsup2

I think the only things which would make DVC a regrettable purchase for me would be a) prices, particularly airfare, rising to a point where it is a struggle to use our points or b) getting tired of Disney World.

Given that we will be going once every 2-3 years I can (hopefully) discount b) I can only hope that flights across the pond stay affordable.

No regrets here after nearly 16 years! We are very happy with our decision and have enjoyed every trip!

We made our purchase when DVC was offering "free park tickets" through 2000. That was great.....until we had to start buying tickets again! :scared1: Let's just say we weren't paying much attention to ticket prices in those years! And while we have no problems with planning ahead, extended family members sometimes do, so we may have to do some room tweaking when they decide to go with about 2 weeks notice. But that is about it. We own where we want to own and have noted some - not many - issues with booking under the 11-month timetable.
