Does anyone prefer Disney transportation over a rental car?

Even if we all take ME and the men pick up a rental I feel much better knowing we have it. Some nights the park buses are nuts to get back, with a car we are there in no time.

For emergencies like needing a pediatric dentist, we didn't need a taxi into Orlando or to pick up the antibiotic. Within minutes Disney gave us a dentist referral and dgs was on his way for relief.

It's really not that much to rent the car compared to the convince. Some trips it sits there a lot, others we take it off site to eat, tour, get groceries and the parks to to pick up kids from an over crowed late night bus disaster.

We are in the "rent a car" group. We always have been, it is definitely different for every family. I like knowing exactly how long it will take to get from point A to point B. Traffic seems to have increased over the years at WDW, but overall it is fine. Agree the signs can be confusing and they don't always direct you in the most efficient manner to your destination. Also we travel quite a lot to other resorts while on our trips. Not only to visit all our favorites but for dining as well. With a car the trip never takes more than 15 minutes, with resort buses they say to allow up to 60 minutes though that is worst case scenario. When going to the MK if we are not at BLT we also avoid the TTC at all costs, we don't like it very much. We will cab to/from our resort to the CR and then walk to the MK, works great but there is the additional cost but we don't mind.

Each family has to decide what works best for them, for some not driving is relaxing and less stressful. For others the buses are stressful and driving works better.

Have a great trip.

We prefer the bus to the car but dh is very tall so we have to get an upgraded car which tends to be more money and he commutes 90 minutes each way to work so not driving is a luxury for him. We also try to stay I. Resorts where buses aren't the only option. Last trip for eight days we only used a bus to get to the parks two days. The rest we walked or monorailed

We are Disney transportation die-hards. Magical Express to Magical Express....we fully rely on WDW transportation and have never had an issue. Have we waited in the past? Sure! However, it's no where near the end of the world...we enjoy it, actually.

We love Disney transportation. Tourists in Florida are idiot drivers. I'd rather the Disney bus drivers deal with them. Plus the drivers know the best route to the parks. And we don't have to worry about parking. So it's worth it to is to have to wait for a bus and stand during the drive.

I detest the Disney bus system; we always get a car, for several reasons.

First, there's Magical Express. I LIKE DME getting to the resort (who can complain about not having to deal with your suitcases?) but going back to the airport is a pain. They pick you up 3 hours before your flight, and it's annoying to have to do RAC for your suitcases. We find it much easier to have our own vehicle for getting back to the airport.

Then there's the hassle at park closing. I hate nothing more than standing in line, waiting for a bus, for 45 minutes after I have been walking in a theme park for eight hours. It's just a killer for my feet and back, and absolutely miserable in the heat of August or on a windy, chilly January evening. You'd think that once the bus comes, it'd be easy, but it's NOT. More likely than not, I am going to be jammed into a bus, like a sardine in a can, with a whole bunch of other hot, sweaty, tired, cranky people. It's hard to stand on a moving bus, especially if your arms are filled with sleeping children or the little ones are awake, standing, but not happy. Then, you get to your resort and get to drag through the lobby, past the pools, and to the elevator and down the hall to your room. I'd much rather hop a parking lot tram, walk down the aisle to my car, and sit down, listen to music, and drive to the hotel- where I can park pretty much outside my room. Even at MK, when I have to take the monorail (or boat) to the TTC and the tram to the parking lot, it's STILL better than standing in one spot, not moving, and then being packed into a bus. Actually, after three trips where we used JUST Disney transportation, DD started asking to ride the monorail and the parking lot tram "for fun!"

I like having my car parked pretty much outside my door. It's quicker and easier on the feet to dash down to a food court to get coffee in the morning. We leave our mugs in the car and stop by the food court on our way back to our room at night, to get a last drink or a bedtime hot chocolate. I'd NEVER bother to walk all the way down to the food court, at bedtime, after a day on my feet, to do this. I like being able to go to Publix and pick up b'fast items, water bottles, snacks, and wine for the room, and to go to the Disney outlet stores for buying souvenirs.

THEN there's the issue of ADRs at resort hotels. If you are in a theme park prior to dinner, that's fine, but if you are at your hotel, trying to get to another, it can be a nightmare. It took us over 2 hours to go from POFQ to 'Ohana, and we were late for our anniversary dinner. It was almost 90 minutes first thing in the morning, to take a bus from ASMu to Epcot to AKL for our ADR at Boma. These are each 10 minute drives, unless, of course, you are waiting for the Disney bus system to get you around.

I know that many people think it's too much hassle to drive while on vacation, but we don't, and we find the signage at WDW to be pretty good. WHat I find to be a hassle is spending too much time standing in line, waiting for a bus, riding a bus, changing buses to connect to other buses, etc. For as long as we can afford to do so, we'll rent a car while at Disney- although I will miss DME from the airport to the hotel, and the luggage handling. I LOVE checking my luggage into my home airport and POOF pixiedust: it disappears and reappears like magic in my hotel room!

And for folks like you, having a car is going to be a must. I stay at BWV, a lot. Believe me, my car is not right outside my door! It is further away than the bus stop!!! Same with most of the deluxe/dvc resorts.
I have no issues with standing on a bus at night..just not a big deal for me. The one time I drove to a park, I found myself waiting in a line for either that monorail or the ferry..both were fairly long. Then there was the tram to my spot. Nope, not doing that again.

I just don't have an issue with the transportation there. It works for us. Yes, there are times that we have to go out of our way to get someplace, especially a different resort. But, we try to plan accordingly so that it doesn't take a huge block of time to get from point A to point B. It's not that I have an issue driving in Orlando.....I've done it before. I drive between Orlando and Tampa all the time. I drive in the Ft Lauderdale area....and up to Orlando from that area. As others have said....tourists in Florida can be idiots. And that's not to mention the natives!!! Geez Louise, they make a Boston driver cring in fear!!
So, for the most part, we use Disney transport. I'm not sure what the deal is with 'having to do RAC'..no one has to use RAC. You can take your bags back with you if taking the bus. But, I have to say....I love handing my bags off at 7am, then spending time in the parks or at a meal and then returning to my resort to get DME later on in the day. Almost as nice as having DME get my bags to my resort upon arrival.

We rented a car on our last trip and loved being able to come and go without waiting on buses or having to stand on the bus. We will definitely rent a car from now on.

This is why we are renting a car. I am used to having the bus stop within 1 block of my house and coming by every 5 to 10 minutes. It makes 3 stops before getting on the freeway and taking 15 minutes to get downtown.

Excellent point! DH is totally used to bus/train commuting, but it's MUCH more efficient than WDW's system. There are schedules and it's rare for a bus to not come basically on time. He and my aunt once had a rotten rotten time going from DHS to OKW, we're talking upwards of 2 hours, and it was on our FIRST trip...he's been scarred for life. We keep trying things, like taking it to MK because that's what people say to do, and each time it's just not fun.

Maybe if you have an inefficient bus system at home it's cool and/or a lot more patience. But being used to theTacoma/Seattle bus/train system, WDW's system is not fun for DH.

And they definitely don't care for you driving your car onto the boardwalk to get a coffee. :)

Only place my car has been right outside has been at OKW and at POR when we had a parking-lot view, corner, room. Everywhere else we've stayed it's a walk.

I always choose Disney transportation. You may have to wait in a few more lines, but why pay parking fees when there is a free option? Not to mention, it's very relaxing to not have to worry about retrieving your car at the end of the day.

In addition, buses and monorails are both a huge part of the Disney experience for me.

If you stay at a Disney resort you don't pay parking fees.

The last thing that I want to do on a Disney vacation is drive. I love the convenience of Disney transportation.

I love the Disney transportation! We spend the time that we stand in line talking over what a great day we had, or discussing tomorrow's delights! And the bus drivers are so friendly and informative! Ask them anything about Disney and they seem to know it! I will admit I don't like standing on the bus, since I don't seem to have very good balance! But at park closing is the only time I've had to stand. And I absolutely hate driving at night in unfamiliar places.

See, 400 responses, 400 opinions!!

I've done it both ways. Most of my trips while growing up, we always rented a car. My dad always wanted the convenience of having a car there and that's always how we got around. When I got older and started going without my parents, we did Disney Transportation and it was great. We had no issues whatsoever and enjoyed ourselves a lot. When we went in 2009, our son was only 1.5 and we decided to go with a rental car just so that we could have a car there to go off of property to go grocery shopping for him or even if he had a fit, we didn't have to take a screaming kid on a bus. When we go this year, our son will be 6.5 and our daughter will be 4 and while the other people in our party are going to be using Disney transportation (mainly because my dad needs a scooter now and will be unable to put it in a car), we decided that we would rent a car again for the four of us. We like the convenience of having it there especially for going from resort-to-resort like other people have stated.

It's really a matter of preference, but I feel you can't go wrong either way!

None of the trips listed below have ever included a rental car or driving. I hate driving, most of our family fights are related to driving or parking, and I've seen lines to board the parking lot trams that have to be at least as long as the bus lines. And then you have to fight your way out of the lot, etc. Not for me.

Whereas I've never seen such a line, and I've never had to come even close to fighting my way out of a lot. We all have such different experiences!

And as the daughter of a former Greyhound driver (back when it was Union, the drivers had power, and it was a good method of transportation), I would NEVER talk to a driver while the coach is in motion. Nor do I want them playing tourguide or talking to other people. Their job is to drive!

Would valet parking at CR cost nearly the same as a taxi?
