Does anyone own a set of Encyclopedias?

When I was a kid, my parents bought one from a door-to-door salesman. Brittanica, I believe. We also got the annual World Book. They still have them, the World Books are quite a read!

My family doesn't own an encyclopedia. We rely on the library and on the internet now.

How about you?

I inherited my parent's encyclopedias when they passed away. They are collecting dust now, same as they did when we were kids.

Encylopedias were one of those things parents were guilted into buying back then, regardless of whether they intended to use them or not.

We also had them growing up, I think my parents still do. My dad always told us that encyclopedias never became outdated when we complained that they were too old to use. Research is just a whole new process now, just type in a search and it all comes to you.

The Year Books were great, I wouldn't mind having theirs when they decide to get rid of them.

I dug up my old World Book, which my parents paid a whopping $500 for back when I was about 11!!

That was more than New York rent back then!!

Michael had a report to do on Oregon and I brought it home. I think he was surprised that books like that existed. We ended up downloading pictures and stuff off the web regardless.

No, we rely on the internet and the library too. My mom still has her old set she got talked into. Boy do those things smell. They're about 25 yo or so.

I remember using them for reports when I was in grade school. But these days there's so much new information so quick I can't see spending all that money. We use the online encyclopedias now.

They are from the 30's I think, gathering dust up in the loft somewhere.

We never owned them. I don't know if my mom was saavy about owning them or not, but she worked in a library for many years so I suspect she had all the angles covered......

Just like most of you, we rely on the Internet and computer software such as Encarta and Grolier. These are wonderful becuase they come with online updates.

We have an old set of World Books. We also have several encyclopedias on CD's. The kids usually just use the internet though. It's so easy to just do a search.

We had 2 sets of encyclopedias when I was a kid. I think my grandmother bought them for us. One was by Golden Book and it was really neat. I wonder what happened to them.

When we moved into this house in 1980 my in-laws moved out and into a smaller home they built next door. MIL left her set of encyclopedias and their wooden stand here, saying "Keep them here, for the grandchildren to use, then when they don't need them anymore we'll pass them on to the next ones" but a few years later she decided to take them back, no explanation given. Never did learn why. Our son was just getting into using them for school. Don't know what happened to them after she passed away and FIL had a sale, I don't remember seeing them....

My parents have the Funk and Wagnell set they got me when I was in elementary school. We have them on Disc...and use the library too...

Glo, now I'm remembering Goldie Hawn and Judy Carne saying "Look that up in your Funk and Wagnall's". (Am I telling my age here? )

We have a copy of Britannica on CD; DS uses that sometimes, but does more searching the web for most research.

We had the World Book encyclopedia when I was a kid. (Back when it was written in manuscript, before type setting.) And we had the Golden Book encyclopedia. I have that one. Now we have the World Book single disc for the computer.

We have a set, but haven't used them in several years. They are so outdated, though, I am not sure they would even be helpful on many topics.

I have a set of World Books we bought about 25 years ago. Got the Year Book up until about 10 years ago. And just didn't see the need of getting it anymore.

We have a real old set, but they are rarely opened. It's either online or the library.

My parents have a 34 year old set of World Books, we used them in school when we were in school..but I doubt anyone has opened a single volume in over 25 years now. They also got the yearly updates for years, but stopped that back in the 70s when we got out of school.

They used to sell volumes of encyclodpedias at supermarkets back in the 60s, I think that Funk and Wagnalls was one of the ones you could buy....I just remember you could get Volume A for like a dollar and then buy a new volume each week or something, my friend's family had them. My parents would get Volume A for real cheap or free and then never get anymore.....
