Does anyone make homemade butter?

I went to the grocery store yesterday and grabbed a pound of butter and last week the price was $3.79 up from $2.99 just a year ago but it is now $4.29/lb. :scared:

Butter has officially crossed over from being an affordable staple in my house and is now considered a luxury item.

So does anyone have any tips on making your own butter at home? I found this recipe that I am going to try http://www.theprairiehomestead.com/2013/12/how-to-make-butter.html.

Making your own butter is not going to be cheaper. Just stock up on it when it's on sale and freeze it.

I guess we are lucky as where I live I get a lb of butter at Aldi's for $1.49 or at HEB for $1.99 a lb.
We live in Texas.

Takes about 21 lbs of milk to make 1 of butter so I've heard.

Are those prices for butter or margarine? I haven't seen prices that low in years for real butter.

I think the butter at Aldi has a higher water content than name brand butter. It probably isn't noticeable in most applications, but I've tried to use it to make frosting and it doesn't turn out.

I only like certain margarine or butter, I can not stand the taste of it being sweet. But I would spend a little more in butter and freeze it. By the time you buy the cream and spend the time making it not worth it, especially now that it is baking season. And cream is expensive.

Don't know where OP lives, but our Albertson's and Smith's (Kroger) has butter for $2.99/pound this week...and last week also, IIRC.

I don't use aldi butter for frosting it does have more water base then a thick creamy butter.

aldi butter is good for everything else. and it was 2.49 lb 2 weeks ago.

Land O' Lakes is 2 lbs. for $5 pretty often here.

We made homemade butter in Home Ec, way back when.
A mason jar, pint of heavy cream and pinch of salt. Just shake back and forth until it hardens. The kids will often make it for a holiday dinner.

I buy it at SAMs Club or on sale and freeze.

How about the price of bacon, it's avg $4.50 a lb. Also, now buying hamburger is mega high high too! Almost $15 for 3 lb.

Bacon around here is regularly priced anywhere from $6.99-$8.99/lb. It goes on sale for $4.99/lb.

Butter has been over $4 here even for the store brand. Starting tomorrow Kroger is having the buy 10 save $5 sale and LandOLakes butter will be $2.49lb. I never thought about freezing it, but I'll go tomorrow and stock up and put it in the freezer.
