Hi my daughter loves the iced chai tea lattes at starbucks. For her birthday I wanted to get her a machine that would make them. I am clueless on the coffee makers etc. but from what I understand a chai tea latte is seeped in milk? So is there a machine out there that would make this? I keep seeing coffee makers that claim to make lattes but I can't understand how this would work as milk is the base not water? Unless I am just totally not understanding this correctly. Thanks for any advice! Melissa

The base of the chai tea latte is a tea of your choice steeped in hot water with some spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, cloves, ginger allspice, depending on the flavors enjoyed. Then you warm and froth some milk and mix into the tea base. You would also add a sweetener to taste to the hot tea and spices. There are quite a few recipes online.

A chai latte is 'hot foamed milk' sometimes with spices. I learned this the hard way when I ordered a chai latte at starbucks, expecting chai tea latte.

There are premade liquid mixes available in the tea section of grocery stores that I've enjoyed. There are also some kcups for keurig and other machines or just tea bags that say chai, but the pods I've found to have artificial sweeteners and I don't use any artificial sweetening products.

Now I want to go to Starbucks and have them make me one. Enjoy!

My 14 year old DD has her Dad wrapped around her finger. He found a copycat recipe online and makes her one in a saucepan on the stove every morning before school. He makes it before she wakes up and then puts it in the freezer to cool for a few minutes and then pours it over ice.
.... or maybe he is just trying to save money by not having to get her Starbucks a couple of times a week!
I think before that they tried several in the Keurig--- making them and then cooling them-- but I don't think any of them were close enough to the Starbucks taste that she liked them.

Her dad sounds like me as I currently stir oak milk and honey.... Would you be comfortable asking him for the recipe? Would he share? I just ordered the chai concentrate that the above poster recommended but I do see that others home brew with different spices. I appreciate the help!

Thank you! That was so helpful!! Now i get it!!! FINALLY! No wonder I couldn't find a specific machines! :)

No need for special machines. The Tazo brand concentrate noted above is what Stabucks uses in their Chai. Just add 1/2 concentrate and half milk (either warm or cold) and you are set. You can always make it fancier, but no real need to.
You mean 1 cup of concentrate and 1 cup of water? No tea bags no sweeter? Everything is in this concetrate?

Yes I was just going to post this. Starbucks uses the Tazo concentrate. They add water too I believe. I order my Chai with 4 pumps of concentrate in Venti size which is the largest cup. And when I make at home that doesn't equal 1/2 the cup. You just need to experiment a little.

Of Course! He said he found a copycat recipe online and modified it some until he got it where DD deemed it close enough not to want Starbucks every day.

He puts half a cup of water and a Tazo Chai Tea bag in a small saucepan on medium for 10 minutes. He said the original recipe he found called for 2 tea bags, but after trying it both ways they decided it did not need 2. He does not put the lid on the pot, but says you probably could because there are times he has forgotten he started it and left it a long time, and then has come back and he has let all the liquid boil out and the pan is dry.

After 10 minutes, he adds 1 cup of 1% milk.
He sprinkles cinnamon and nutmeg over the top.
He adds a tablespoon of honey and stirs it all in.
Sometimes he sprinkles the cinnamon and nutmeg after stirring the honey in, but says usually he just stirs it all.
He pours it in a coffee mug and puts in the freezer for about 10 or 15 minutes and then pours it over ice.

We are going to get that Tazo concentrate that was posted above and give it a try too. I am hopeful since he makes it with Tazo tea bags (which apparently the brand has to be Tazo to taste right) It sounds like it would be a lot easier on him if that worked.....which means she will probably reject it. LOL.

A latte, as stated above, involves hot foamed milk, you can get a relatively inexpensive frother at Target. Then you pour that over steeped chai tea. The beauty of tea is there are so many companies and flavors to explore, if she likes tea or wants to try different kinds you can always get her like a Chai sampler gift set :) Tea lattes are super easy to make and this might also be a good opportunity to have her learn a new skill to prepare them herself.

Side note though this is really sweet! What a good dad

I use the Tazo box of liquid concentrate. I'm guessing the starbuck version is more concentrated; I don't add water, only milk (or milk substitute). You said "iced," so there's no need to boil water or use tea bags; it's really just as simple as pour half concentrate and half milk in a glass and add ice if you need it.

Yes, everything you need is in the concentrate. For iced chai 1/2 cup concentrate, 1/2 cup milk, add ice, enjoy. You should be able to buy it just about anywhere in the coffee/tea aisle--Kroger, Walmart, Target... It comes in 1 quart paper cartons. I usually add one to my cart every week. My daughter drinks a cup every morning.

Thank you! I tried this earlier BUT I did not have a TAZO CHAI it was another company chai tea. She told me it wasn't quite as sweet as STarbucks so I added MORE honey and that helped. I did the same thing he warned about, the tea boiled into a dry pot! I am glad to know I am on the right track with his receipe, I will try again tomorrow. I am tired of spending 5 bucks a day at SB A few times a week. Thanks so much! I am sure TAZO is the key :) Thanks for the tip on chilliing the mug! Mine was warm today YUCK!

Chai for me is a hot drink in cool weather or an iced drink in warm weather, either makes me happy but I do tend to drink it from Starbucks more in colder weather.

But, just an FYI for OP - don't boil the milk - warm it to hot, not boiling. As soon as you see a bubble or slight movement, it's ready.

Edit: an at Disney Chai drink for me - Frozen Green Tea Latte. Shortly after Starbucks arrived at Disney, I was in Magic Kingdom enjoying this drink after standing in the long line, and so many people commented on my drink, asking what it was. It's delicious and refreshing!

The local coffee chain around me uses Big Train Chai Tea Latte powdered mix. It's all I've had so I can't compare to Tazo, but I sure do enjoy it. I ordered it from Amazon to have at home.

I make one every day. lol
Starbucks uses the Tazo brand chai. I buy the concentrate at Publix or Target. Half concentrate and half milk. Hot or iced. It’s exactly like Starbucks. You can use whichever kind of milk you prefer.

TThanks so much! I am sure TAZO is the key :) T

Have you tried the Tazo liquid concentrate? What did your DD think of it? We tried the box of Tazo liquid concentrate today. DD liked it. It sure makes it easy to make them, but I will miss the smell in the kitchen in the mornings when DH makes them on the stove. I suspect he is not going to give them up entirely though. He calculated that the boxed concentrate makes 5 Chai tea lattes. The box and milk are the price of 1 Starbucks or less. The box of Tazo teabags is the same price as the boxed concentrate, but it makes 20 Chai tea lattes. We will see whether he would rather save the work or the money!
