Does anyone live somewhere that others have a negative opinion about?

I know how that feels. I have lived in TN the last 16 years and my in-laws are from up north and always make redneck-hillbilly jokes about us here. Arrrrrrrrr. That always gets my blood boiling.

Yep, been there - got the wifebeater t-shirt.

Where are you at, neighbor?

Doesn't matter where you live - someone is going to have a bad opinion of it. Like my little town - some lady accused us of living like Nazis because of the rules. Huh? All HOA have rules.......

And my all time favorite was the Diser who described Celebration as weirdly too nice. :confused3

But at least they don't know about all our crime!!! :rotfl2:

I live in London in the UK and we are all trying to get out and be anywhere else in the world while all the time asylum seekers are risking their lives to get here as they believe the streets are "paved with gold".

Susan

I used to vacation in London all the time. However, I have not visited since 1989. I as considering making another trip. Has it gone down hill alot in since then? Is it less safe?

Yeah - try being from California. We are not all fruits and nuts! We are a truly diverse area. Lots of misconceptions about the SF Bay Area = we do not have earthquakes weekly!

WEll let's see, here in Toledo we have prominent community members, councilpeople and the governor all involved in an investment scandal, a popular councilman has been indicted on bribery charges, we had a riot not too long ago when a white supremicst group came to town and we just had 3 suspected terrorists arrested here this week....I thinkyou can guess what people are going to start thinking about Toledo.

Speaking of Rednecks.......

Have you heard the WEST VIRGINIA jokes?????????? Just to let everyone know....I have my teeth, I do wear shoes, I am not married to a relative, and I do not have a couch, refridgerator, or a car without wheels in my front yard!!! :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

Waco, Texas. It seems we're only in the news for horrific events. First the Branch Davidians, then the Baylor basketball murder case. Thank heavens for the Lady Bears winning the National Championship.

Waco is truly a delightful little city. It's large enough to have everything we need, yet small enough to know everybody. We have georgous parks, museums, performing arts, and sporting events. The city is easy to get around in and we have very little traffic concerns. I love it!

I live in "The OC", California. People who watch too much TV (particularly a few sailors I know from the Pacific NW) seem to think the entire county is populated by people built from plastic, who drive fancy cars and SUVs and have no idea what it's like out in the real world. Massively insulting. If all you do to get a feel for a rather large suburban area is watch some TV shows and look at what you see along the water's edge in Newport Beach, you won't see reality. Explore a little bit and you'll see that we're just like everyone else - most of us don't have anything plastic in our bodies, we drive normal cars and we do have a grip on reality.

I really don't understand people who generalize without ever exploring a city. :confused3 So many bad reputations have been started by those who just don't take the time to look around them.

It's strange but Dallas seems to have one of two reputations. It's either a booming city where the streets are paved with gold. (I LOVE that expression!) Or it's a redneck ultra-conservative quagmire.

It is booming or at least its suburbs are. It does tend to be conservative :( but there's really all kinds of people here. The job market is poor though and the whole area has its share of problems. Also, Fort Worth has nicer amenities which surprises a lot of people.

I learned long ago that reputations usually don't mean anything. For example, I heard the stories about Arkansas and discovered that it's really a delightful place for the most part.

I have negative opinions on where I live. :teeth: It's over priced, over rated, and DH is underpaid. :teeth: We just paid $53,000 for a half acre...when 5 years ago my sister paid $1000 for a half acre. It is rediculous. Gas is over priced, grocerys are over priced, cars are over priced and it's so hot and ugly. I grew up here and have always hated it. However this is where all my family lives and they'd never leave. So we're stuck here too. :teeth: The only good thing is we are 1 hour away from the gulf and 3 hours away from WDW. :cool1:

We live in Sevierville. Not too far away. I like Maryville it is not as full of tourists as it is here. We have even talked of moving there. :goodvibes

Proud native here to the sad thing is now I live in Ohio not 10 miles from my parents in WV and my DH's family (ok my PITA BIL) still crack "jokes" about uneducated hillbillies.

When I was very young I twirled baton on a national level and I will never forget standing in line getting ready to compete and a girl from NC asked where I was from and I told her WV and she immediatly looked at my feet, I had no idea why so I asked her and she said that her parents told her the all WV were so poor that none of them wore shoes. Wow that was a shocker.

I lived in Detroit. I have you all beat! Murder capital of the world most years.

You beat me too it! :rotfl: But you and I both know Royal Oak is rather nice. :teeth:

I worked in the City for 10 years, lived there (at WSU) for 5 years. It gets a bad wrap. Some of it is deserved. The City politics are bad and very corrupt. The whole area suffers because of it. We had one good Mayor in my life time (I was living in the city at the time and voted for him) and he was so feed up he did not run again!

However there are some good things about Detroit, and the area around it is rather nice. ;)

We always made fun of Toledo in my family. Nothing really against the City really. It is just where my mother was born and raised, so for us it was the best place to make fun of. :confused3 O.K. I have a sick family. I blame my brothers! :teeth:

I live outside of Buffalo...we have a bad reputation for having tons of snow...not true. I think we only shoveled twice this year. South of the city gets the snow, the city and north get hardly any.

Some of our reputation is true though, people are moving out...high taxes, high electric, high gas, control boards running the city and the county...it's a mess.

Amen! Control boards, wage freezes, fuel bills, taxes....ugh.

But the weather this winter...that's been great!

Sounds like most of the "prejudices" are regional. I have never heard of many of these judgments!

I am from Brooklyn, NY. I remember growing up and wherever you went in NY people thought if you were from Brooklyn you were "packing" or a hoodlum of some sort... :confused3 And I was LIGHT YEARS from that personna!

Southern California. No one seems to have anything nice to say about it! It definitely has it's fair share of probems - illegal immigration, urban development, high cost of housing and living - but I like where I live (near San Diego) but I'd love to leave and move up the central coast or even out of state someday.

Hi: I grew up in Dearborn, Detroit's next door neighbor. Dearborn is noted for being Ford Motor headquarters. I worked in Detroit 20+ years and loved being in the city. When I mention Detroit in state or out, people have such negative opinions. We live near Michigan's capitol now but frequently visit Detroit restaurants, sports events, etc.

WVjovifan: I love your great state! Our kids/grandkids live in Morgantown and we are in WV frequently. My daughter once lived in the Beckley and Parkersburg areas. WV is a beautiful state.

You beat me to it. I lived in WV for a year while I was going to school at Salem College. I remember some students who really did not like the area and they printed up t-shirts that read, "John Denver lied". I liked the area, but it was a 60 mile round trip to the nearest McDonalds, and for a college kid without a car, that was hard to deal with.

I live in York, PA now, which is in the middle of the state. This area has been discribed as "Philly on one side, Pittsburg on the other and Alabama in the middle!" Granted this is not a very pretty area, but I like it here, people are very friendly.
