We have a long drive ( 16 hours) ahead down to Disney in November. I love to read but can't in a moving car. I have never listened to any books on CD before but I'm thinking about getting a couple Harry Potter books. I looked some up on line and was surprized at how expensive they are, are they worth it?

We always listen to audiobooks on long drives--they really make the time go by quicker. Try checking Ebay...you never know what you'll find. Also, I know that there is some sort of deal with Cracker Barrel restaurants. I'm not exactly sure how it works though.
Some years, we couldn't find anything on ebay so we just bit the bullet and paid full price for selections but then when we got home, we sold them on ebay and at least got some of our money back.
My kids also liked them. They liked the Magic Tree House series, CHarlie & the Chocolate Factory, and the Judy Blume books.
Good luck and have a safe drive!

I bought the first four books on CD on Ebay for around $120. And I made sure that they were legitimate copies and not bootlegs. I got the fifth book on CD at Sam's Club for $40.

One reason that the books are so expensive is that so many people make illegal copies of the books and SELL them on Ebay. Not if I can help it. I'm on a one man crusade to stop all Harry Potter piracy. And I'm losing the battle.

You might be able to borrow the books from your local library on cassette or CD. Some of the earlier books should be pretty easy to get. I lust love Jim Dale's reading of the Harry Potter books.

If you decide to purchase the books on tape/CD, please don't buy bootleg copies. :(

Sometimes, they are worth it. Abridged books are never worth it, IMO. Used audio books are probably less expensive.

Local libraries carry audio books. Go try some out for free...:D

I spent 5 or 6 hours a day in my car and love my books on cd. I will do books on tape, but I prefer the cds just because they are much easier. I usually check mine out from the library. They have a wonderful selection. I have found books on tape at the dollar trees stores too. They don't always have a great selection, but they are only a buck. I think the Cracker Barrel deal is you buy the first one for full price and then you trade it in for a lesser price. I have never done it, but I have read the signs.

WE listen to books on tape all the time. The library is a great place to check out books especially things that you might not want to read but would like to listen to like biographies. Books A Million always has tapes on sale on one of their tables in the middle of the store. Then the cracker Barrel you buy the book and then if you turn it in in a week you get back all but three dollars that you paid for the book. If it is longer than a week then they may take out 6 dollars of teh purchase price. The problem we had was we forgot to return the books so we have a couple books that we didn't plan on having. The John GRisham books are good to listen to as are the Patricia Cornwell. My husband likes Tom Clancy but I find them difficult to keep up with. One of my favorites was the George Bush All the best. I would not have picked it up and read it but it was great to listen to.

I listen to lots of X-Files and Star Trek novels on cd plus Motley Fool and comedy cd's

I dont read books but if I did thats how I would do it, then I would go sit on the potty and have a sandwich
