OK, Ok, I will bite despite prior posts regarding this subject. I have active twins also houdinis, I live in a home with every retrofitted lock you can imagine. Not because they themselves escape but rather they hasten the escape of our 165 lb ST Bernard who thinks the beagle next door is a snack. At 18 mts a kitchen stool was dragged and they opened a latch 6 feet up, but, I digress.

When they were little and we were traveling with others at BWV I always put the couch in front of the sliders. I knew I would be SURE to lock it, But Aunties and Uncles are not so neurotic, 3 trips couch in front of the doors. Now that they are older and assuming The worst can happen. I suggest door alarms. They emit a shriek loud enough to hear in the Villa/(studio if you are in the bath.) But, certainly not to loud to disturb your fellow Vacationers. I found these by doing a travel safety search on ASk.com. It may have been purchased from Walter Drake? In any event they stick on the door jam with velcro and go off if not removed before the door is opened. They were 14.95 or 19.95. I was there in August At AKL and we flew the day off the blackouts in NY. My 9 year old DS was very anxious thinking it was terrorist related, And he had an episode of sleepwalking that very night. Thankfully I am a light sleeper and saw him walk by me assuming he was going to the bathroom at like 4 somthing. In any event Iwatched the clock and at the 6 minute mark, got up as I was concerned he was ill. And he was gone, He had pulled the latch over and left all that while sleeping. I was never so terrified in my life. He is 9 I can not imagine how you must have fealt over a 2 year old. I Think I may have gone insane. Luckily I am a light sleeper!!!!!! The moral of this story is if you buy these alarms, Don't put them on the sink of your master bedroom and leave them there like I did. Apparently for them to work, You have to bring them with you::yes:: Who'd have guessed?

Easy now. Every post I read (including mine) on this thread was very polite and considerate. Most people were just pointing out that the door latch existed and how it should be an effective deterrent for keeping a child from leaving the room. Nobody said a single thing that was rude or condescending and most people agreed that you should indeed contact Disney about the way the situation of your missing daughter was handled. It sounds like that was handled poorly and you have every right to complain.

This is a quote from your post explaining the situation:
""Also upset about the doors in the villas that lead to the hallway.
They are very easy to open and do not lock (bolt) from the inside."

It sounds as if, by your explanation, there is no way to keep a child locked in a room unless there is a deadbolt inside that can only be unlocked with a key. If your child (or any child) is smart enough to climb a chair and unlatch the bolt, then she's certainly smart enough to turn the latch on a deadbolt, if there was one, on the inside of the door. What difference would that have made?

Finally, I'm not sure if you are an overly sensitive person or not, but I'm not sure why you reacted the way you did. Nobody was trying to make you feel worse than you already did. Certainly nobody did anything to warrant being called pathetic. To be honest, your response comes off as very sensitive and hyper-defensive. I don't think anyone meant any harm here.
Just wanted to say this is a very nicely written post with great advice.

Hat's off to you Sarahbella for editing your post. I'm sure it was a very unpleasant situation you had to deal with. Any advice to keep our children safe is always welcome here in my book.

I've had a locked hotel room door (at a non-DVC hotel) opened and a person entered while I was in the room asleep. I have found a small pair of vice grips to be a handy tool to help insure a door is locked. You can place them on the swing latch. Just make sure adults know how to undue them in case of fire.

Perhaps there are some other suggestions for portable door locks we could share here that we could all pack in our suitcases for our trips to DVC or any hotel.
