Does anyone know, how many pressed penny machines there are?

I dont know enough about these machines at Disney to know if they are everywhere or if they are a little harder to find.

I plan on bringing a rolls of quarters but I dont know even an approimate number to bring

There's a bunch !!! They are in each resort, in almost all the shops and various places around the parks....oh in DTD as well.

In 2008 we set out to get as many as we could...I took 2 or 3 rolls of quarters and I think I used most of them....I filled up 2 books.

We also took a roll of quarters and new, shiny pennies with us. I knew there were pressed quarters, too. Funny though. The base cost goes up for the opportunity to destroy a higher value coin. Things that make you go Hmmmm.

Oh, and I found a pressed dime machine in the gift shop after Space Mountain. That was new to me. BTW it took three quarters and a dime to press.

There are a bazillion of them. Remember to bring pre-1982 pennies, because the others get weird streaks and colors. Shiny is best, too. There are actually places that will sell you rolls of pre-1982 pennies.

And, of course, you can buy little Disney pressed penny holders.

It's heaven for kids who like that stuff.

FYI, this is because in 1982 pennies were switched from a solid copper alloy to copper plated zinc. The copper plating in post-1982 coins is very very thin, and when the coins are pressed it tends to expose some of the zinc core through the now smashed and stretched copper plating. Pressing post-1982 coins won't affect the design or pressing process, you'll just get streaks of silver colored zinc in the design.

Oy - my son got 8 pennies and 1 quarter last week. He just said he has a looooooong way to go to complete his collection!

Well, figure that each machine usually has 3 or 4 penny designs. And each resort usually has 1, so thats 45-60 coins, just at the resorts. And I would say that each park has about that same number. Now machines get removed for service and relocated to new locations all the time, so even the official lists you can get from guest services may very well be out of date. So probably 250 pennies or so at a given time. Plus a handful of quarter machines as well. So collecting all of them is not only going to get expensive, but take a while as well. Each full roll of quarters would get you 20 pennies, so you would need 15 or so rolls to get most of the pennies. I would pick a maximum number and just bring that.

I'm an avid pressed coin collector. Let's face it, you don't always have a "pretty" penny on you if you're someone like me who will stop at any random place to get a pressed coin.

I have found if you have a coin that comes out with weird markings if you put some hand sanitizer on it (I just have the el cheap-o kind) and let it dry (let sit for a couple of days) it will form a film. When your rub the gooey film off your coin will be substantially cleaner.

I have pressed coins from all of my travels, but you can bet I come home with a TON from WDW.

Make sure you check the website in regards to how to put the penny in. It comes out better if Abe is facing to the right I believe... I'm not sure, but I know I read it somewhere. Probably right here on the DIS. With that being said, we have almost two full books from the girls and their "need" for smashing pennies. The newer books have places for pennies and quarters in it, so if you plan on smashing both, keep this in mind...

I'm sure you'd be able to. The list we had (which we got from a link somewhere here on the Dis) had a pretty good description of each coin and said where it was located. I think it gives enough info for you to be able to figure out which ones you have.

I heard this before, but I didn't know the date of the pennies, so thank you. I have a few dozen brand new pennies that I was going to take, but maybe I should swich over to some pre-1982 ones.
