We are thinking of buying our first house. We found a house we like but it has an unfinished rec room. We want to finish it but we are not sure as to how much it will cost. The size of the room is about 19' x 11' and we will include a few closets. We will put standard carpeting in too.

Anyone have any info on this? We dont want anything fancy, just painted walls and such.

Not sure what you mean by rec room but we had our basement finished in June and the cost was $27,000. We have a little over 1000 S.F. We had exsisting rough in plumbing and we added a 3/4 bath, the cost did include all the electrical, plumbing, fixtures, tile, insulation(spray on foam type), framing, drywall, taping, painting as well as framing and adding three closet doors, woodwork ( casing around doors, window frames and a pole cover). We had several estimates and this was a great price in our area (suburban Chicago) and this did not include carpeting ( another $2500.00) Good luck with your decison!

IT really depends on what is there, what you want, and who would do the work. We did our basement "movie room", about 2 year ago. It was some what finished when we moved in, but very dated and ugly. We had to rip out wood paneling, add dry wall, a couple small tile projects, some wires ran for the sound system, paint and carpet.

We had a friend do the dry wall. Another friend do the electrical- both worked for cheap! Bought inexpensive carpet because its a low traffic room, and painted it ourselves. We still need to put in a couple new doors and baseboards/ trim. We spent about $5000.

Thanks. By rec room I just meant recreation room. basically it's most of the lower level of the townhouse

That sounds about right. We have a friend that can help with drywall. We would need an electrician to do the wiring and someone to install the carpet. We will also do the painting ourselves. There wont be a bathroom either

I'm with DeJavu, the answer to this question can vary dramatically, depending upon what you are defining as a "rec room."

We also finished our cellar (the latter being any space that is primarily below grade, basements are ones that are primarily belwo grade) two years ago. We used the Owens Corning basement system (which I strongly recommend to anyone living anywhere where below grade moisture is an issue; lumber inevitably starts to rot in those situations, no matter how much you dehumdify).

Total cost for a space of about 700 square feet (which included all wiriing, putting in a drywall ceiling, egress well window, closets and new firedoor to the garage) was about $16,000. I spent another $800 on a Pergo floor, which I installed myself. The final product (fabric-style walls, hardwood floors and drywall ceiling) makes the space look and feel much classier than a standard finished basement.
