I work in the clerical unit for the county, and now last week I placed second on the financial worker promotional list. There is a position open right now so I know I will be called for an interview soon, and out of everyone tested, I'm the only person that unit actually knows, so I think I have a decent chance of being offered the job.
Here's the thing - it would be about a $3/hr bump for me, which would be GREAT, but the job is among the worst jobs in the agency. It's brutal to learn, very high stress, and the worker's caseloads are way higher than they are supposed to be due to budget cuts and the fact that they can't get people to stay in the jobs. They say it takes a good two years to fully learn the job.
I am also in school full time, and I swore I wouldn't take a job that was hard to learn until I graduated. There would be a lot of training out of town that would probably interfere with school too. On the positive side, it would give me a lot of training and experience that will look good on a resume.
So I'm trying to weigh the risks versus the benefits, and I'm wondering if there are any financial workers here that can speak from experience. Is it worth the stress? I've turned down one promotional position already, but it didn't pay much more than what I make. A $3/hr bump is hard to turn down!
