Does anyone have appliances fixed anymore?

Not so sure about TVs, but for appliances, I always turn first to Repair Clinic -- they have a "repair help" section that will lead you through diagnosing what might be wrong, how to fix it (and order the parts), or suggest calling for help if it's not really do-it-yourself-able. Have saved a bundle this way fixing the washer, stove, and other stuff myself!

I have not gotten a tv repaired though there is a tv repair shop next to where I get my hair done and they are always busy.

My cooktop, a gas 6 burner commercial grade, ignitors stopped working. My engineer husband tried to fix it and made it worse. I thought I would have to replace it. You can imagine how thrilled I was about that. To get anything close we would be spending upwards of $1500 - $2000. My dryer was also making a terrible noise, it is only 16 years old and a Maytag. We called the repair person that fixed our washer about 4 years ago. He came out, looked at both appliances and said he had to order parts. It will cost us about $250 to fix both appliances. Boy did it save us a lot of money. They charge $75 for the call if they do not fix anything but if they fix it they wave the cost and just charge for parts and labor. The best part outside of saving the money is I do not have to shop for replacements.

Does anyone have their appliances fixed anymore or is it just cheaper to buy new ones? My whirlpool dishwasher (5years old) and my Sony large screen TV (at least 10 years old) have both broken. I'm wondering if anyone has these things fixed anymore and is it worth it? How much did yours cost to fix? I'm not sure how much a repairman (or woman) would charge just to come to the house. :confused3

Well, I currently have a deathwish on my dishwasher (about 13 years old and VERY loud) and the washer/dryer (15.5 years old and not effecient and now I have a larger family so would like new large capacity, high efficiency models).

DH has the deathwish on the 15 year old 35" TV.

But, what did we have to repair????? The 8 year old gas range with convection oven. We've replaced the igniter on it TWICE- at 2 years and at 8 years. The $265 repair was much cheaper than a new range.

Oh, and the over-the-range microwave (about 13 years old) died. And I HATE those and want to remodel. But it would cost more to have a repairman come out than it would to replace. So we now have a countertop model and the old micro holds my large frying pans. I picked the brain of the oven repair guy, and even with him already being in my house, it would be too $$$. He told me how to determine if it was a fuse or the magnatron. Took DH 1 hour to make that determination, complete with a trip to Radio Shack. It's officially dead.

Contact Sears appliance repair and they'll tell you how much it will cost for someone to come out. Depending on the DW, it might be worth it. Often the TV won't be.
