Does Anyone Have A Husband Like Mine?

The question I have is how do you get all that change counted and rolled. Most of the banks around here (Mass)will not take it unrolled AND if you want to just put it through a coin sorter then you need to find one of those CoinstarMachines and pay a %which is counter productive.

You can buy one of those coin sorter banks (we ended up with three different ones--all received as gifts when they were popular), but I don't entirely trust them and check them manually. Sometimes they're over or short one coin or a different denomination sneaks in.

Otherwise, ask for coin wrappers at your bank and count and roll them manually. It's a good project while watching television. And if you have children, have them help (you'll want to check after they go to bed, though. A bit more work for you, but it gets them involved.

I took in rolled coins to our credit union (about $60 worth) and they told me next time don't roll them. They have a coin machine and they had to unroll what I had done and put it through their machine to count it. So now I just take our change in once a year before we go on vacation in a ziploc bag. Easier for me but I sort of enjoyed counting it myself!

We also save our change for about a year. Just before each Disney vacation my DW counts it out (usually averages between 2-3 hundred dollars) and thats what she spends on cloths for the trip - or what ever extra items we might need (not planned into the budget)

As far as the counting thing goes, he saves up like a plastic container full and then counts and rolls it (in one of those sorters, but like Taja checks it manually) then he marks it down on his running total and stocks it away.
BBB- I know what you mean about not using it and cutting vacation plans. I am not mad about it just a little bothered and confused. But EVERYONE has thier "thing" if you know what I mean and that is definately his "thing";)
But I am glad to hear he isn't the only one that is crazy enough to save for this long!!

OMG!!! Have you ever discussed the interest that you forfeit by "hording" change (I mean that in a nice way!!!)?:teeth:

Maybe if you have a $$$ amount, like figure the interest on what he has saved...even an approximate, doesn't that bother him??? I'm all for saving change, but then it goes to the bank (I have an ING account that earns 2%) for safekeeping.

I guess it is better than a DH that spends too much!

Have a great trip!

Where do I get a hubby like that? ;) I raid the change from his back pocket a couple of times a week and put it into a jar on his dresser-- the idea was that we each have a little jar and see who can save the most (it would all go in the big water jug anyway) But he won't play along.. he always spends his change and insists on having a few coins in his pocket. Sometimes when he has too many coins, he stacks them up where ever he is.. so I occasionally find little stacks of coins all over the house. It's kinda cute..

Oh well, takes all kinds!

My DH has a change jug from when he was little. The only problem is its at his parents' house & I can't get to it! I can't imagine how much is in there ~ he put in money right up to when he moved out about 10 years ago. He always told me it was for his son's first motorcycle (DH races off-road), but we only have a daughter & she has no interest! I'm still trying to figure out a way to get it! I know he has stashed change here at our house, but he knows if I ever find it, it'll go straight to the Mickey Jar!!

Hey I think the reason my brother still has the change is because he doesn't WANT to have to roll it! Can you imagine how long it would take?????? Can you see the face of a bank teller as he lugs those babies in to be counted? LOL

If he gave them to me, I would have no problem rolling the change. ;)

This thread is hilarious. First let me tell you that my mother has those coke bottles (4 ft) but just 2 or 3. They started saving when my father was still alive and he has been gone for 20 years. I would say she has been doing this for probably around 28 years. We made a lot of contributions when my kids were little because they had fun putting our change into Grandma's bottles. I told her to cash it in and go to Vegas but she won't - she wants to leave it to us as an inheritance - she wants us to remember her while we roll it all after her funeral. Anyway I can't see saving change as a valid way to save money - you just have to break more bills!! I would rather "pay myself" first every month and have an automatic transfer from my chequing account into a vacation savings account. Whatever works best for you.

My dh has a huge "piggy bank" that he has been putting change in for 10 years.

One day while he was at work, me and the kids decided to go buy rolls and roll everything up to surprise him. It took us hours and hours but the kids enjoyed it. It was over $6,000.

Well, he was surprised all right. He was fuming mad and couldn't believe that I actually wanted to put it in the bank

:earsgirl: :earsboy: :smooth: :smooth: :smooth:

Those with amounts in the thousands should really be putting them in IRAs or CDs or college savings accounts, etc. The potential wasted is a real shame. Give it to the kids to invest (wisely) and it would sure be worth a lot more than sitting in a jar. Plus, they'd learn some good habits. It's nice that the money is there, but . . .

Gee, that's not what my husband does. We keep our change in a piggy bank named "Disney". My husband empties, rolls and takes the change to the bank to change into bills before I even know what happened. We don't spend the money, but he loves to see how much change we've saved.

Believe me - it's a valid way to save money. We were married for about 15 years & had saved over $6,000 in change. (it was in a bank account that we made monthly deposits to!:) )

We had always talked about what we were going to do with it when we finally decided to use it to join DVC. :Pinkbounc Every time we had a substantial amount of change saved I used it to pay off part of the loan. Our last payment was made with "change" only 18 months after we initially joined - that even included doing an add-on during that time!

So, saving change can be a valid way to save. We're still doing it. I say it's for more points - DH says it's for our Florida condo when we retire!!! We'll see! :p
