My good friend has a 12 yo DD who they are taking in to be evaluated for OCD. Her DD has a lot of issues with grades, whining, things being a set way, etc, but not sure if thats just common, or if she actually has OCD. Hence the tests. But, if anyone has been thru this, could you let me know what symptoms/treatment your child may have had, when they were diagnosed, etc. Basically anything that may be able to help my friend w/her DD and any advice you may have. Thanks.

OCD is a form of anxiety. My dd has anxiety however not any OCD behaviors.

She is on meds and in counseling with a wonderful counselor that came recommended to me in treating anxiety in kids.

It is a slow process to figure out basically how to "live" with your issues. The counselor has guided my dd to do certain things to alleviate the anxiety. This is something she will have to tweak her entire life.

Now my sister is OCD on cleaning. She describes it as if she does not do certain things she literally will have anxiety attacks over it. Hers is not that bad but she is on meds which helps her.

All I can say, no matter what degree it is, getting help is something that should be top priority since you have to learn how to manage your issues thruout your life.

I will think good thoughts for your friend.:goodvibes

I have a subset type of OCD/anxiety disorder myself, and looking back now I think it started to manifest itself when I was around your friend's DD's age. I only wish I had gotten help sooner, but I'm pretty sure my parents weren't aware of it.

I have been seeing a therapist for 8 months now, and it's made such a big difference for me. She uses something called "cognitive behavioral therapy" and "exposure response prevention." These are both common techniques used to help people with anxiety disorders. Essentially the therapist helps you re-train your mind to see things logically rather than through the eyes of your anxiety. It has made such a huge difference in my life.

By the way, anxiety issues in kids around that age are very common. So I think it's great your friend is getting her help before it takes her life over too much.

YES! That is what my dd is doing in counseling. Now my dd's anxiety is mainly about school, homework and friends and the high goals she has set for herself.

Right now she is using a calendar and a planner and breaking tasks down daily. It has been so wonderful for her. Of course it took quite awhile to get to that point.

Now I have to work on her getting braces. She passed out when she got oral surgery and now I have to figure out how she is going to get the molds for her teeth done safely.

It is a struggle at times but the more she pushes thru the stronger she is getting.
