Does anyone else wish Disney would stop building thrill rides?

If you would have visited EPCOT in the mid 90's you would understand why thrill rides are vital, it was a ghost town, now it's one of the more popular parks. As far as the thrill rides Disney builds, they are very tame and most people are able to ride them. They don't build Top Thrill dragsters or Sheikras.Their style of thrill rides are very re-rideable which makes people come back to the parks, rides like Horizons, World of Motion you might go two trips and start questioning if you will come back, EXpedition Everest, Tower of Terror, Space Mountain are the kind of rides that will make people come back over and over.

As far as the new death at Mission Space, it's really sad but that lady knowing her health shouldn't have gone on that ride, they give you plenty of warnings.I actually feel the only parts of Mission Space I enjoy are the times when you feel the G's, the rest of the ride is actually pretty lame and not on par with their other classic thrill rides, Everest being their latest!!

I agree they need more rides like Sorin, bring back World of Motion,Scrap MS, Build rides that all can ride not just those who want turblent sensatons. If you want roller Coster type thrills then go to IOA leave Disney be what Walt wanted it to be a park for all to enjoy.

Thank you all for your posts. In retrospect, perhaps I should have rephrased my question. I don't think Disney should stop making thrill rides, I just wish they would, occasionally, bring back the feeling of the older dark rides. As for Soarin', I have not been on it, but have read lots of posts about the height factor, mine included. My words were not a "cry", merely a statement.

I knew I was in the minority when I first posted this. I have kids who absolutely adore the thrill rides and probably would not enjoy Disney as much without them. Yes, there has to be a balance and I do think Disney has done a great job of providing it and staying current with the competiton. I just miss some of the old "feelings" I used to get with the older dark rides and wish Disney would build a new one.

I hope you do realize that Walt had the Matterhorn bobsleds installed at disneyland. For the time this was a "thrill ride". For a time Walt didn't want rollercoasters in his park, but even he realized that everyone enjoys different things. So to say that we should leave WDW and go somewhere else for thrills is ridiculous.

Walt Disney World isn't built for one specific person, it's built for "ALL" to enjoy. And since we all have different likes, there are rides to suit all.

Well said!

I think you have to have a good mix of all types of rides. WDW has to look at what will draw all people in.

The thrill rides catch peoples attention, Snow Whites Scary Adventures doesnt, for example. Thats not to say that once people are in the park that the ride doesnt draw people, its not enough though to get people to make WDW a vacation destination.

Busch Gardens Williamsburg or even Carowinds in Charlotte is a lot closer for us to drive to than WDW. And they are loaded with thrill rides. BG is especially nice to visit. It is clean and the atmosphere is much like WDW. Not as enjoyable as WDW, though. So comparitively speaking, both of the other parks have more thrill rides than WDW, yet we drive an extra 6 hrs to get to WDW vs the others. Why? Not because of the thrill rides but because WDW is what it is. There is a magnet that draws us to it each year, if that makes sense.

I too like those dark rides. That makes WDW special, the mix of rides and attraction that they have.

Bottom line, IMO, is that WDW has to continue to build rides and attractions that draw lots of newcomers and past guests alike. If not, us oldtimers wont have a WDW to go to if they cant draw the crowds.

Completely and utterley disagree, Disney in fact need more thrill rides! If they stopped building them then teens, young adults and even most adults would stop coming (i.e.bad for buisness). I am already disgruntled by the way in which disney have made tommorowland a more children based land compared to what it used to be (i.e closing timekeeper and alien encounter and replacing it with buzz's ranger spin and the really bad sticthes great escape). And if you took away TeTo from the disney studios or mission space from Epcot do you really think disney could truly say they offer a wide arrange of entertainment for every age? They couldn't because Teens and young adults want to ride thrill rides and disney by far produce some of the best around. At the moment disney have got the blend just right (well apart from needing one new thrill ride in the magic kingdom that is).

closing timekeeper ... and replacing it with buzz's ranger spin
A correction: Buzz Lightyear replaced the utterly boring Dreamflight -- that was a quantum improvement.

There's a perfect mix IMO.

I'm sure it's already been stated in this thread (as has been in several others)...this (the recent death) is NOT Disney's fault in any way, shape or form. There's no point on focusing on that.

You have a dramatically higher chance of being killed in a car, walking down the road, participating in strenuous activity, etc. (trust me, I'm a firefighter & see it daily) than dying on (or because of riding) a ride (regardless of how "intense" it is). How many people have died at IOA (who has more or less all "intense" rides)? Any?

Know yourself, know your body, know your limits. IMO, both of the people who have died in relation to M:S had absolutely no buisness being on it in the first place. I'm not blaming them for their deaths (don't get me wrong, my heart goes out to them & their families), but it certainly isn't Disney's fault.

End rant. :firefight

I think Disney is doing the right thing by adding more rides that appeal to the folks who enjoy something more exciting than Peter Pan or a jungle cruise. There's a good mix over there now...something for everyone.

Universal raised the bar in 2004 with ROTM and now Disney has raised it with EE...good for them! Personally I think AK needed something exciting over there besides Dinosaur.

Basically, if Disney doesn't add more thrilling rides they will lose out to Universal and even Busch Gardens...IMHO.
