Does anyone else wish Disney would stop building thrill rides?

Absolutley not!!!! That is what is so great about Disneyworld. Something for all fans and all tastes.

I am sorry to hear that there was a death on one of their rides, I have never personally been on that one because it looks like something that might make me sick.

I have to disagree with the op though, because I absolutely love thrill rides. I personally think it is a good business to include something for everyone, I mean if they don't have them they will lose the people that want them. If you don't personally like them then you can choose not to go on them and just go on the ones you like.

Hey, look at it this way- the thrill rides draw the crowds away from the rides that you want to ride! ;)

What about Soarin? That's the newest other than Everest, and it's certainly not a thrill ride!

I don't know about the rest of you, but I miss the "old" Disney. It seems that every time Disney builds a new attraction it's all about the thrills...higher, faster, scarier, etc. With this new death from Mission Space it makes me wonder why we would have to ask ourselves if each new ride will make us dizzy, nauseous, claustrphobic, acrophobic, whatever. We shouldn't have to ask ourselves if the ride is safe to go on.

I wish Disney would bring back some of what it used to be...rides like Horizons (now closed), Spaceship Earth, The Great Movie Ride. These rides were/are entertaining without being scary. I, for one, don't need thrills in order to have fun on a ride. I'm sure the Disney imagineers could come up with something that the entire family could enjoy without having to worry about ride restrictions. I want to have fun, be entertained and maybe even be educated. I don't want to worry about getting sick from a ride.

I do understand that Disney has to be competitive and progressive, but Disney is not a thrill park, it's a theme park. Higher, faster and scarier is not always better.

Just wondering if anyone else felt the same?

Why can't you have both? :confused3

the quality of them. As stated thrill rides can mean something different to each person, so for this post any roller coaster other than Goofy's Batnstormer will be consdered a thrill ride.

I think that Disney has developed a good share of non-thrill rides, but the quality of some, Pooh is not great, very poor in fact. Maybe, Disney should invest a few million in a great family ride. Walt wanted a place where a father could do things with his daughters. I have found that a lot of their new attractions do not allow me to spend time with my son of 6 years old, due to either height restrictions or type of ride. I love the autoanimatronics and the theming of rides like Pirates. Can you imagine if the Imagineers really put their minds to it, what type of calm ride they could make. The Haunted
Mansion is great with 70's technology as are many of the old mainstays, but if they would dedicate a great deal of time and technology, they could build a ride for an entire family that would be definitely "E" ticket. Pooh is not, Philharmagic is not, Stunt show is a show not an attraction, but still is not an "E" ticket event.

I miss World of Motion to this day. Yes, I love TT and so does my son, but World of Motion had a wider audience. I could have taken my 71 year old mother on it, I can't ride TT with her as her back could never handle it.

I think that Disney can keep everyone happy and has done a good job trying to balance thrill and family, I just wish that they would do one or two big $$ famly attractions.

but my post will probably be thrown to the side like other posters who tried to give hope to the OP. They obviously just don't want to hear it.

tricia.

That was presumptuous and uncalled for. I have read and appreciated all the responses given. I don't need hope...just wondered if anyone else felt as I did that Disney should build more family friendly attractions.

I think the OP is right. I love thrill rides, but if I wanted to go on one, I'd go to Six Flags or Universal. I go to WDW for the peace, serenity, and "cuteness." Winnie the Pooh and Philharmagic is the only new attraction that even compares to the old ones.

I do miss the old EPCOT attractions that were actually fun AND educational. Unfortunately, with the release of Mission Space and Test Track rides like "Universe of Energy," and the extinct "World of Motion" and "Horizons" are visited less frequently and are pulled from the park. You can see what they did to WoL Pavilion and how they are destroying the original "Living Seas." I wouldn't be surprised if "Living With The Land" was the next to go. Just to let you know...if even one thrill ride invades any of the countries in the World Showcase, I will be furious.

DH and I just talked about this! I understand they are having to compete and draw in business. But at the same time, they need to create some true Disney classics at the same time.

YES!! The thing I LOVED about WDW was that they DIDNT have many thrill rides, cant ride them, make me sick! I hope it isnt a trend that will continue, give me Small World or Peter Pans Flight ANY day!!
D.D.

I think Disney has done a good job at both. Part of the problem is that with limited real estate in the parks they do have to look at how many people are riding the rides and what is going to help draw in people. The fact is that the nature of people have changed since WDW first opened. There is a lower percentage of people that want that type of experience.

For what its worth I think WDW has done a great job of blending the "thrill" rides with the more traditional rides. I am not even sure you can really clasify most of the "thrill" rides at WDW as for real thrill rides at other parks. Maybe Mission Space & Tower of Terror but that would be about it. All of the roller coasters as WDW would be considered tame compared to other places. I know, we are going to Busch Gardens Williamsburg this year and even the most mild coaster there, The Big Bad Wolf, is far more thrilling that anything at Disney, even compared to RnR.

Without the Mountains, RnR, MS and Tot a lot less people would be going to WDW. That type of drop in admission wouldn't be good for anyone.

One thing I don't agree with is the people who say it is the persons fault they died on the ride-----I for one know that I DO NOT want to find out there is something medically wrong with my 4 yr old by having them die on the ride!
I would also hate for something to happen to my family BUT if you have a preexisiting condition whether know or not, death could happen anytime and when it happens at Disney - $$ - media - then it is going to be blamed on the ride which should not happen.

I do not think WDW should stop making thrill rides at all.....

But it's true, Kathyg, you haven't mentioned soarin, even though a number of people mentioned it's a great family ride. Are you just ignoring it's presence? and look at the posts by jiminyfan and disney nut, neither of them mention it! Maybe you all just haven't been on it? But like I said, my whole family enjoyed it, and it's practically brand new. Even newer than S:E. So I guess I just don't buy the whole 'disney isn't making family attractions anymore' cry because it's simply not true.

tricia.

I don't know...when I go with my mother, she won't ride Splash Mountain or TOT or any of the coasters. I don't lament that I can't ride them with her, I just have her get me an extra fastpass.

I don't mind that they're putting a Nemo show in AK, although it's probably going to be so cute and child-centric that I won't be able to take watching it very many times.

It'd be cool to have a new dark ride if they do it right. How is the Monsters Inc. at Disneyland?

I think Disney is doing alright myself. :thumbsup2 They need variety from family ride to thrill rides.

I look at it from a competition standpoint. Look at Sixflags, Cedar Point, Universal, now THOSE are thrill rides, and unfortunatly for us like me who don't like thrill rides we will have to indure Disney and the competition trying to out vomit-inducing-ride each other until it backfires against them.

If Disney DIDN"T make thrill rides then they would lose profits from people going to where they did make thrill rides, and we wouldn't have Disney anymore . ;)

So although I don't like thrill rides to much (LOVED R&RC though! ), I think it's one of those grin n' bear it situations . Because unless we want to see the results in the parks of Disney losing profits, we have to let Disney keep up with the Joneses until this Fear Factor-ish phase of ride design is over.

I think it's a shame that Disney gets all this bad publicity from one ride. ANd you can't say they aren't trying. When I rode MS they warned people at least 10 different times before getting on the ride that if there was ANY possibility you had (fill in long list of medical conditions here) that you absolutely should not ride. They also threw in claustrophbia (and they mean it-- that space is TINY). If somebody is unaware of a medical condition, that's a shame but it's not Dinsey's fault and it definetly doesn't mean that they should stop doing "thrill" rides.

Actually, I hate roller coasters -- they terrify me and I have gone on every one of Disney's, including RnR (I refuse to go on ToT, however) and they aren't that bad. Fast, yes. Thrilling -- I guess that depends on the person (it got my adrenaline going for sure). But even if I hated one (like, ToT) I see people who love them and just because I'm a chicken doesn't mean that nobody else should enjoy the rides. BTW, I saw a lot of families getting on rides like RnR and loving it - from Dad to daughter.

Disney has a very good balance between thrill rides and non-thrill rides. If they shift the balance too far in either direction, attendance will suffer. There are many families without little kids who enjoy going to Disney because of the thrill rides. You can't appeal exclusively to one part of the tourist market. To do so is foolish and will result in a loss of business and money.

I love the old, now gone attractions, especially World of Motion, which is now the Test Track. They could have kept the original ride and then ended it with the test track! Oh, well.... :confused3

I like most of the attractions at WDW, but I think WDW's next park should be a "Yesteryear" park with all of the attractions that have disappeared from Disney theme parks over the years - Mr. Toad's Wild Ride; World of Motion; Horizons; 20K Leagues Under the Sea; Skyway; original Journey Into Imagination; Adventure Thru Inner Space; Main Street Arcade; Magic Shop and many others. I know there are many people who would like to experience those attractions and never had the chance while they were part of a Disney theme park.

I think disney is doing a great job of keeping a good mix. I agree with the poster who said most of the disney rides don't qualify as true thrill rides. In fact, thrill ride junkies wouldn't classify any of the mountains or Test Track as such. Several of the "thrill" rides have a low height requirement(40"), so that allows families with children of different ages to enjoy the same rides. The little ones feel like they are doing a big ride while the older kids are still entertained. I'm actually glad they have RNR and EE. I can ride those with no problem, but Space and BTMRR give me a raging headache. If one is to look at the past attractions that have been opened, many of them appeal to a wide group of people, not just 5 y/o's. For example, Soarin, Philharmagic, Lights, Motor, Action and Stitch. I'm sure I have forgotten something. If you want to take that a step further and look at the last two big ticket rides, it would be Soarin and EE. One for the whole family and one thrill. I'd say they are doing a decent job at keeping balance. I'm looking forward to see what they put in the Timekeeper space. I'm hoping it's an elaborate dark ride! :goodvibes It's also been widely circulated that the Pooh playground isn't permanent and that a ride will go in that space. I can't see a thrill ride going in Fantasyland. Although, I will admit, the Teacups are more than I can handle!
