Does anyone else have Hottubphobia?

I'm always fascinated (and a little jealous) when so many people (here on the Dis and elsewhere) place such high premium on accessibility of hot tubs during their vacation. I love, Love, LOVE hot water (come out of the shower lookin' like a lobster), but I absolutely cannot tolerate hottubs; I've appreciated the relaxation a few times in my life, but each time was severely punished by a residual illness....

To me, hottubs look like bubbling cauldrons of microscopic beasts. Please tell me I'm not alone!:(

You are not alone. Not to gross anyone out, but I got a yeast infection from one once and have been shady about them ever since.

I stay out of them at all costs! I read a terrible article (I believe here on the Dis) about a woman that was skiing and went into the hot tub and got that flesh eating disease.

Yikes..... After that I'm all set!

I love hot tubs...never had a problem with any one so far in my life :knock on wood:.

don't worry about going into one at Disney...you'll never get close to it...about 200 kids under age 10 like to pile into each one...no adult has come close to one!

I hate them and will never get in one. One of my students enjoyed one with his family last year while on vacation. A week later, he was blind in one eye. Bacteria had gotten under his contact lenses and caused him to loose his eyesight. It turns out that the hotel was not properly chlorinating and disinfecting the hot tub.

::yes::

Ack! those are some awful stories!

Well, I do love the spas (at GF and the healthclub at YC/BC) because they are private and have only adults in them.

Plus....it makes me want to book those suites with hot tubs and DVC villas...no doubt!

Don't even get me started on all the little ones in the hot tub.....
doesn't anyone read the signs?

(Parents! It's NOT a wading/toddler pool!!!!)

there! I feel better!:teeth:

It's not a phobia, because phobias are irrational.

Your fear of hot tubs should be real. ::yes::

Yep - I took care of a fellow Hospital employee in ICU for a while for a respiratory disease he picked up while in a Hot Tub (in Cancun)- Microbes LOVE that nice warm water - and those bubbles provide a handy way to aerosolize them right into your lungs. Guy was lucky - He lived - it didn't look like he'd survive for awhile!! (He was on a vent for close to 2 weeks!).

Hot tubs are fine - IF they are properly sanitized and chorinated - and If I were to trust anyone to that, it would definitely be Disney - but I'm certainly picky about it now!

Come on Iloveeyeore-Dont be a sissy-Suck it up. A few microbes are good for you. You're not really gonna be scared away by some bacteria are you?

I feel the exact same way! I haven't even taken a bath since I was 8 years old. I don't like swimming pools either. Needless to say, I'm a huge germaphobe!

Just to clarify, I do take showers. The statement that I haven't taken a bath since I was 8 sounds a little gross. lol

Well.......a hot tub can be good for my back. I have major back problems, and a Disney trip puts a lot of strain on my back.
It really does help, however, I see the need to be VERY
choosy. Last year, I spent 3 days of my vacation in the DVC room with the wonderful hot tub.

I would never go in one(also from treating patients in the hospital w/bacterial infections from spas)nor do I allow my children near them. Hot tubs in general are not healthy places for little kids because of the high temperatures. I f you thought a WDW pool was a "large toilet", just think of all that ecoli and other... boiling away. Threehearts

Thanks for the reassurance, everyone.

HairyAriel, you are so mean to me. I'm considering therapy because of you, I'll have you know! Here I am venting my sensitive soul and you know just what to say to put me over the edge!;)

Threehearts, funny analogy. After posting this morning, I cleaned my bathroom and thought of hot tubs!:earseek:

DisneyAddict M, I knew what you meant. I haven't let my kids take baths since they could stand up alone. Why would anyone want to wallow in their own filth?

SRU, that's happened to me, too, only I was too shy to admit it. I'm itchy just thinkin' about it!

I need to have my family read this thread, they make fun of me because I think hot tubs are breeding grounds for bacteria - yuk!

Count me in too. Gross!! ::yes::

Another shower taker only!! I've never understood lying in the water that is washing off the dirt and grime and then calling yourself clean. Ick! lol

I will only get in the hottub at my house. I keep it well chlorinated and it is set at a constant temp of 98 degrees (so I can stay in it for hours:p )

I'm with you guys!! I don't like hot tubs or baths. Just showers! I do like pools, but I have to just block my mind of all the nasty stuff in them. I want my kids to enjoy pools as much as I did growing up, so I don't talk about how I think they are gross..and ruin it for them. I won't let them into a hot tub though, they can do that when they're old enough to understand about the germs and decide for themselves.

Sorry ladies but..........
Gotta love those Disney hot tubs!
I have a weakness for them. I dream about them.
After 60+ trips and as many hot tub soaks, I've never gotten sick.
My Disney trip would be incomplete with out my hot tub soak!

Don't feel bad Allison, my DH would never miss one either. Even in the middle of July??? That I don't understand!
