I have never done crochet in my life, but my aunt made a baby blanket for me and she has made one for my son. I love these blankets very much and I would like to make one for my newest DS that will be born in January. I don't get to see my aunt so she can't help me and no one else in my family does this (well no one that's still alive).
I was searching begining crochet online. Everything I've found seems very confusing. I'm wondering, does anyone crochet here? Do you have any advice? Any books you recommend?
My DH is making ruthless fun of me, he says that women in the 50's would crochet...not that it matters. I just really like the blankets and my aunt probably will make one for my newest DS. It's just that it's always something I remember my grandma doing (she has since passed on) and I would just like to learn how.
Thanks for any advice.

It really isn't hard. Once you learn the basic stitches you can pretty much make anything. The patterns seem hard but they aren't. I would check your local craft store (Michael's, AC Moore) and see if they have a class going on. Take a beginner class and go from there. I love to crochet and have made many things. I made each of our children a blanket and sweater to come home from the hospital in.
I noticed you are in NY. What part? I'm on the island and we have a local yarn store that gives classes.
