Hi... just got a letter from the company that promised they would not raise their rates... YUP they are giving us a 100% rate hike.. double.....

So I was thinking about just using the cell phone. We have Verizone.. which I am happy with, the service here in our part of Ca is good.

Anybody with a family have just cell service-no home land line?

How is it working for you?

Thanks so much!

Joan

My Brother mentioned wanting to go to strictly cell service but he needs a land line for his DSL connection. He told me that as soon as cable modems are available in his area he is doing away with the phone line. He and his SO both use only their cell phones for calls so if the land line rings he knows it is a telemarketer because no one else has that number.

I have only a cell phone and have had it for over a year now this way. I have cable modem for the computer so that wasn't a factor.

I love just having a cell phone. It has cut out the majority of telemarketing calls...and if a telemarketer does call, I just say it is a cell and they remove me from their list.

But it is just me. If you have a family, I would suggest looking into a family plan, one is which you can have one cell phone that stays in the house at all times. With a family plan, you could also get phones that the older members of the family (not sure if you have children and/or their ages) could carry with them.

Just some things. I would choose a plan that has enough minutes that you will not go over. I would also pad the anytime minutes for those months where emergencies might happen. Also nationwide long distance is a plus since you don't have to pay for each long distance call.

The way I made my decision was to sit down and do the cost analysis. In the end, it was more economical for the cell phone.

DH and I had only cell phones for a long time. The only reason we have a home phone now is for DSL...the cable company made us mad so we switched to DSL. Even though we now have a home phone, no one calls us on it except telemarketers. All of our family and friends know to just call us on our cells.

DH and I have a family plan. We share minutes but we don't get charged minutes for calling each other. We've had this plan for about 2 years and love it! We aren't switching any time soon either b/c none of the cell phone companys around here offer the plan we have at the rate we have it!

For all practical purposes I have only a cell phone. I do have a land line but only for a modem line. I use only my cell as my "phone" number.

Thank you! I am going to make my way over to Verizone tomorrow to speak with the rep. I do better when I speak to them in person and I can have every thing explained to me as I have many ?'s. I will check on their family plan.. I figure anything around $120 a month would be less than we are paying now for both Cell and Land line usage.. that would be including all of my long distance charges too. I am not always satisfied with the sound of the cell and do prefer the sound quality of our land line.

"Can you hear me now??"

I talked for a very long time to the Verizone rep. He actually did an excellent job answering all my ? consisely.

I am looking at a 3 phone America's Choice plan. 1200 minutes, 1000 mobile to mobile and free nights and wkds.. also no roaming chgs and free long distance.. all for $120
so it fits in my plans.

Now I still would like to know if there is anybody who can come up with a reason I should keep my land line? Help!

Thanks so much for your help.. I like having lots of different opinions and information as it helps me make decisions.

Hi- my SO and I only have our cell phones. We have had it this way ever since we moved up here to Indy almost a year ago. We have cable modem. SO uses Sprint and gets totally reimbursed for his cell bill through work. I have a plan with AT&T. Once my plan is up, I think we are going to a family type plan on the same service. This works really well for us because we would both have cell phones anyway so it just saves us the cost of a home phone line. We both have free long distance which is important b/c I make calls back "home" (***sigh***) to FL all the time, and we have all the other perks you would want on home lines, like caller id and call waiting, plus we both have voice mail, so no need for an answering machine.

OK, I'll share my opinion on the no land-line situation from the perspective of someone who has to deal with calling family that only has cell phones.

It drives me *CRAZY*!!!!

My bro & sil only use their cells, they have no land line. I despise having to call them for several reasons:

1-You have no idea where they are or who they are with when you call -- you are *always* aware that you might be calling at an inappropriate time/location. Of course, they don't have to answer, but it's still an interruption.

2-If they are out and my dparents are babysitting, they have to remember to bring *their* cells in case of an emergency.

3-My bro & sil are *always* forgetting their phones in the car, or leaving them upstairs while they are downstairs, or just plan letting their batteries run out!

Plus, around here, our cells are unreliable for some reason. A lot of times calls just don't go through.

Our parents, sil's parents and numerous friends agree with us. Not having a land line to call is a PAIN. Of course, YMMV!! :)

EDITED TO ADD: One more negative about having only cell service was unfortunately clear on 9/11 -- in case of emergency, it's often impossible to get through on cell phones. :(
