Does accent matters?

Hey guys, I wanna work or join the disney internship program in disney world, but I have an accent so does that effect my chance of getting accepted?

I'd be very surprised if Disney didnt consider you for employment because of your accent. Dont worry. Go in there and charm the pants off those people! (not literally of course! )

I would assume that for most jobs, it won't matter. I worked with a guy, for example, who was good friends with a couple of the characters. He had a very thick accent, but clearly that wasn't a problem since he was not allowed to speak to the guests. I knew another guy who worked custodial at DHS and he had a very thick accent, as well. Now, if you wanted a job where there was a lot of speaking, such at Great Movie Ride or Jungle Cruise, you might be less likely to get one of those jobs. Also, Disney loves to have bilingual workers. If you are bilingual (which I am assuming you are), you can take a test to prove you can speak another language and then you can get a flag on your name tag that says what language(s) you speak besides English. You mean like rolling your r's or like a stutter? Either way, I wouldn't imagine there would be a problem if you're qualified for the job!

You have to be more specific. British accent? Russian? Italian? Boston? Brooklyn? An Accent is fine as long as you speak the language itself fluently and can be fairly well understood.

If you are talking about a speech impediment that shouldn't be any problem. Like if you lisp, stutter etc.

The accent would be no issue and I don't think the speech impediment would be one either. My sister has/had a severe stutter and she did a lot of speech therapy sessions to help her with it before she went to interview for jobs after college.

I would imagine it would boil down to if you are easily understandable. If you aren't easily understandable it wouldn't have any bearing on if they hire your or not, just what position they offer you. If you specifically want a position where you interact with guests all the time, then yes it could be an issue, although being bi-lingual (if you in fact are) could swing the balance back in your favor.

They can find something for you. There are lots of jobs where speaking is not the primary duty. No worries!

Yeah no problem. I have met many wonderful CMs with speech impediments. You should look into some speech therapy however, particularly while you are still young. Best of luck!

Fix completely? Not sure, but it'll certainly give you a great start!

No one here can tell you that. It all depends on how bad it is, and how much therapy you get. It may just be better.

Only get the therapy if you want it, not because someone on here told you to get it. Depending on your career aspirations, it may or may not hold you back. If your desired career requires a lot of speaking, then it is probably beneficial to get therapy to minimize the impediment. And the longer you live with it, the longer it will take to retrain your brain.

So do what is best for you. You can find something at Disney with a speech impediment. But long term, it may be worthwhile to pursue speech therapy. Only you can make that decision for yourself.

OP, I used to work in a communication disorders clinic and saw a lot of people with stammers/stutters helped with therapy. I'll never forget one man. He was 56 years old and stammered all his life and had never had therapy. He was so self-conscious about it that he let it stop him from going to college and pursuing the career of his dreams. It was very sad. They were able to help him, but I left while he was still in therapy, so I'm not sure how long it took - I would imagine quite a while, with him being older and so severe. I saw others helped after just a few sessions.

There are all different things they can do to help you. It's definitely worth looking into!

Liberty Belle, Did they do the thing with the delayed response hearing aides? I remember reading about that.

I wondered if something like that might help the guy on IDOL who had a very bad problem with this.

At first I wondered if it just might be a typo in the title to your thread, and now I see that you have, again, typed 'matters' instead of 'matter'.
This also might make some of us wonder if you have not spoken English as your first/primary language... or maybe grammar???
