Does a garment bag count as a carryon?

It has been forever since I’ve had to travel with dress clothes. Regardless of the length of our trips, we never check luggage, always making sure we can do laundry midway.

We have an out of state wedding coming up and will have to travel with 2 suits and 2 dresses, plus shoes, etc and regular clothes.

Back a million years ago, you could hang your garment bag in a spot as soon as you entered the plane. What do you do with it know? Throw it in the overhead?

I’m half tempted to just put the clothes in our carryons (thankfully we’re short, so things should actually fit).

Any tips?

I'd put it in the carry-on. Right now, SW lets you take a carry-on that fits in the overhead bin and then a personal item that fits under the seat in front of you. I got stopped last time because I had my carry-on, my backpack, and my purse. Purse had to go IN the backpack or the carry-on, couldn't just sling it over my shoulder (and it's a little one, basically a vera bradley wallet with a shoulder strap).

At this point, I don’t even have a garment bag! I just hate the idea of tossing it in the overhead (assuming it would fit). Just seems like everything will be a wrinkled mess, falling off hangers, etc. It made much more sense to use one when you could actually hang it up.

Just recently flew. It was announced that it’s 2 items only. 1 being your carry-on bag and only 1 personal item - purse, laptop, neck pillow, over the ears headphones, etc. They were very adamant and firm on the 1 personal item only. Asked passengers to condense to meet the requirements.

I would put clothes in the carry-on bag. Then iron if needed.

Yes, a garment bag counts as a carryon and must fit into the overhead or under your seat. If there is a closet at the entrance it will be for the FA's to use.

I've honestly never understood why a garment bag would qualify as a carry on to begin with. It doesn't fit the dimensions.

That being said, I don't know the last time I saw someone carrying one onboard.

Yes.

On both United and Southwest, we've had them inform passengers pre-boarding that even a blanket in their arms would count as their carryon item. In other words, stuff it in their actual carry on bag or leave the blanket behind because they only get one carry on. By that logic, a garment bag would definitely count. I've flown with garment bags before. It's been a while but they were always counted as a carry on.

Never a garment bag, but my daughters who were competitive Irish dancers had to carry their solo and team dresses on planes (they cost thousands so never check them). They used smaller dress bags and never had an issue as their carryons, and they weren’t the correct size for carryons.

Was just on a flight last week and it just amazes me at the size of some of these carryons people bring. Wish the airlines would just do away with overhead bins. It would force people to check luggage and speed up my getting off plane. 😉 I know I sound like the get off my lawn guy.

If I knew that the bags would actually get where they're supposed to be going and make it undamaged, I would check bags more often.

Having a carry on bag also gets me out of the airport quicker. No waiting for checked bags.

In addition to the possibility of a lost or delayed checked bag.

Probably best for the OP to check the website for the airline they are using. Most have a section about checked/carry-on items and the rules for what is permitted and how it is sized varies by airline.

As a carry on only passenger, I do not approve this message 😁

*I don't slow anyone down as I am a pre-border and the last to get off
