Who the #$&% Is Jackson Pollock? (2006)

Is this the one about the lady who fought to prove it was A real painting by Jackson Pollock, if so I thought it was fun.

I'll second the PP who mentioned "Who the #$&% Is Jackson Pollock?" - really good movie.

I watch a bunch of them on Netflix. Some of the one's I'd recommend:

The Great Robot Race: Nova
The Hidden City of Petra
A Family Undertaking: POV
Ghosts of the Abyss -- this one is by James Cameron and is about a trip down to the Titanic wreckage. Very neat.
Ape to Man
My Kid Could Paint That -- about a 4 year old abstract painter
Sick -- about a performance artists' struggle with cystic fibrosis. Not for anyone with a weak stomach.
Super High Me
Nerdcore Rising
Indie Sex -- partially hosted by Dita von Teese; pretty interesting take on sex in cinema throughout history
Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price -- I had to watch this for school, but still pretty good.
A Certain Kind of Death -- about people who die with no next of kin
Small Town Gay Bar -- about gay bars in the Deep South
The Business of Born -- by Ricki Lake, SUPER awesome!
Born into Brothels -- about children in Calcutta's red light district
10 Questions for the Dalai Lama
Through Deaf Eyes -- I watch this about once a month at work, because I train new hires in a call center that makes calls for deaf/HOH people and we show this in every training class, but it's a great one about deaf culture in the 20th century. :thumbsup2

i LOVE documentaries-i use my dvr and scan through 2 week periods to see what IFC and Sundance have showing to set them up to record.

an excellent one off the top of my head is "a life without pain". it is about children born with the medical condition wherein they do not have pain receptors. it shows being able to feel physical pain is necessary to ensure a person's body is maintained and card for when needed. the cases are heartbreaking, but learning how the kids and the parents deal with the challenges is inspiring.

that one sounds really interesting i'll definitely look into that one!!

what's dear zachary about? with all the recommendations i'll definitely be checking that one out :thumbsup2

thanks for all the input you guys!

A young doctor is murdered, and his friend starts to make a film about him by traveling around the country collecting memories from friends and family, and as he's working on the project, all sorts of other things occur, which he follows in the documentary. I don't want to give it away, because you have to see it as it plays out. It's intense.

Born Into Brothels -- about children of Calcutta brothels who are given cameras.

There is a BBC documentary on African Witch Children in Nigeria, very good!

Paper Clips

Nursery University-- Upscale new yorkers fight to get their kids into elite preschools. It follows the whole process.

PBS documentary on the Orphan trains

One that I liked was To Die In Jeruselem. About two beautiful 17 year old girls that were killed by one suicide bomb. One was the victim, the other the bomber. Sad, but informative.

Another vote for- Spellbound, Dear Zachary (get ready to cry your eyes out), and Paper Clips.

Others I suggest-

Young@Heart - (fabulous, absolutely fabulous- a MUST see)
The March of the Penguins
Mad Hot Ballroom
An Inconvenient Truth

I can suggest many good political and religious themed doctumentaries...but I don't want to start any flames ;)

I am have on my netflix queue After Innocence and Food Inc. I have heard good things about both. I watch a LOT of documentaries.

if you like quirky but touching check out "gates of heaven".

it's older (late 70's) but still holds up well. it's about a pet cemetary in my home town of napa california. it documents the people who run the buisness as well as the clients.

back in the day it got very good reviews.

Man on Wire-the story of Phillippe Petit's daring but illegal high wire walk between the twin towers of the World Trade Center in 1974. We watched this the other night-very poignant to see the towers in all their glory.

The Times of Harvey Milk-won the Oscar for best documentary in 1985-SO MUCH BETTER than the movie Milk with Sean Penn.

Good thread. Here are few of my picks
Murderball-About the U.S. Quad Rugby team in 2004
Go Tigers-About the town of Massilion, Ohio's devotion to football
Prom Night in Kansas City

http://www.amazon.com/Yellow-Brick-...ef=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1264122140&sr=1-1

"As affecting as it is charming, the film festival favorite YELLOW BRICK ROAD follows a group of extraordinary actors from the Drama Program of Long Island’s ANCHOR Organization (Answering the Needs of Citizens with Handicaps Through Organized Recreation) as they embark on a remarkable four-month-long journey to mount an exceptional and lavish stage performance of the classic film The Wizard of Oz."

A few that have been mentioned already - Grey Gardens and The Bridge were excellent.
Religilous was funny and thought provoking.
I would add any of the Michael Moore films.
A couple that I watch with my son - Dogtown and Z-Boys(about the birth of modern skateboarding) and Riding Giants(about the beginning of big wave surfing)

Another vote for Dear Zachary

Also:

Etre Et Avoir (To Be and To Have)

Do you know of any specific movies/documentaries that you've watched on Hulu that you've enjoyed?
None yet. Just yesterday I was sorting a basket full of magazine clippings I had collected, and found a little article about that website, and then saw this thread!
