Both my girls do. I mean along with the normal stuff. Bri's main thing is alternative music, Kelsea's is whatever is popular and Aaron Carter. But classical? I never expected it.

My little ones love it. It's one of the few things that will get DS to relax in the car. DD is so cute...she calls the 1812 Overture "Fireworks Music" or "Surprise Music"....if you know the music, you know what she means! I have Chopin's Nocturnes playing on repeat in both kids rooms...it just promotes calm and helps drown out neighborhood noise during naptimes and at night. I always take a CD player and Chopin with us when we travel...when they hear it in the car, they know it's time to go to sleep, and playing it in the hotels keeps noises from above or next door from waking them :)

Here's an interesting tidbit about classical music..

There was a large study done on the effects that classical music has on small children and it was determined that babies who were exposed to large amounts of classical music from infancy to Kindergarten for some reason excelled in Math..

I didn't think much of it until I met my son-in-law.. His Dad is REAL big on classical music and it was the ONLY music played in their house until my son-in-law became a teenager..

Well - he is brilliant when it comes to Math of any kind! So much so that he was always exempted from tests and finals - even when he was in college!

Makes me think there may be something to that study afterall!;)

I like classical, but dh likes classic rock. Consequently my boys refer to classical as "girl music". :( Their attitudes are getting better now that they are getting further into their music lessons.

I'm really not sure about my 14 yo dd.... since I like it- I'm quite sure she doesn't  But my 7 yo ds really likes it. He got a classical music "game" for his LeapPad and it exposed him to many different composers- some he recognizes on his own now. We ordered a new 200 disc cd player and I can't wait until it comes so I can start playing cd's again!!

When mine were "kids" they liked all kinds of music. DD was mostly into Jazz and "big band", but DS played everything from opera to heavy metal, about the only thing he doesn't play is jazz. Classical is probably his favorite to work by, and he is a whiz at math! Now that they are grown, their styles have remained pretty much the same. Both of them know a lot of different music styles and lyrics. You do NOT want to play the game "Encore" in this family, because it becomes a knock down, drag out between those two!

When my kids were younger we were always playing the "Classical Kids" series of tapes...each is a fictional account of a real composer, using his real music...the most famous is probably "Mr. Beethoven Lives Upstairs." The stories and music are great. It was so cool when my 3 year old was out and heard some music and correctly said "Vivaldi."

Yes, DS 11 enjoys some classical. What really surprised me, however, is that he really enjoyed the Irish Tenors (especially "the big bald guy"!). They were on PBS on St. Patrick's Day and we watched the entire program.

Do you think it might be too late? For me, I mean. ;) I could use all the help I can get. :teeth:

dp movie soundtracks count? I love some classical and classical singers like Josh Groban

We are blessed with a musical house. I have a music degree and play. Our sons are both being classically trained on their respective instruments. We listen to about 75% classical music and 25% everything else. Our kids prefer classical to anything else. It's great!

How do they do in Math? I'm curious about how much validity there was in that study...

They are, in fact extraordinarily advanced in math. DS#1 had to take Math and University of Maryland after his Sophomore year in HS because he had exhausted the math that the HS had to offer. DS#2 is two level ahead in Math at this stage as well. DS#1 will graduate in December with a degree in Computer Engineering from Purdue. DS#2 wants to major in Music (he is more dedicated and a bit more talented then DS#1).

DS 6yo came home from school the other day and asked if we had Beethoven's 5th symphony. Apparently, his music teacher played it at school. DS has been humming the beginning of it. I think I'll go over to Amazon now and buy it for him. ::yes::

Would a singer like Josh Groban be considered classical

Strictly speaking, most of his recordins aren't classical. But it is good music, and good music is better than bad music. Actually, silence is better than bad music.

They love Fantasia and Fantasia 2000. Does that count?

I think so! :D
