Do your kids go to school the day after Halloween?

  • If it's a school day and they're not sick, they go

  • No; they've been out late or it's a special day so we let them stay home

  • They stay out of school for religious reasons

  • Something else

DD14 insists that many of her friends "never" go to school the day after Halloween. I've never heard of such a thing. Is this common?

Editing to clarify: I don't mean a scheduled day for the schools to be closed. I mean that the parents LET the kids take an "unscheduled" day off.

ETA: She'd be in school even if she was the only one there. And she's not giving me a hard time about it. Just for the record.

Not HERE it isn't.

(But could be like when the Steelers won the Super Bowl. Our DDs insisted NO ONE was going to school the next day. :rolleyes1 )

Umm....they do here. I have never heard of not going to school the day after Halloween (unless of course it's on a Friday or Saturday)...they even force you to get up on Monday morning to go to school if Halloween is on a Sunday.

Let's see -- my oldest is 8th grade and she has *yet* to have the day after Halloween off. Now we do have 1/2 day Friday but I have no idea why -- I think it's a Teacher Institute day or something.

After you put up your poll and included the "religious reasons" option, I recalled that tomorrow IS All Saint's Day. So perhaps if the kids go to Catholic school, they do not have school tomorrow.

Our oldest went to a Catholic college and they did not have classes on the Holy Days. :)

that never happened when i was in school. i always was back in school the very next day. and it's not like they have ToTing late anymore. it ended here at 7(every year it seems to end earlier and earlier. i swear one of these years it'll be 5-6)

i went to school on All Saint's Day when i was in a catholic school :confused3

Each kid gets to pick one day to play hookey during the year. As long as they don't have a test that day, they can take any day they want.

If they use it the day after Halloween, great. If not, they're going to school.

Everyone is expected to be in school the day after Halloween - however, the teachers are nice enough not to assign any homework on Halloween so the kids are free to trick-or-treat at whatever time is convenient for the family..:goodvibes

Mine has tomorrow off - middle school teacher conferences.

I'd rather play tomorrow than go and see her teachers for 10 minutes per subject. If I need a conference they are always available by phone, email, or in person at other times.

So DD13 is at a Halloween slumber party, and we are going to the "big mall" about an hour away tomorrow afternoon!!!!

I was really surprised that my 2nd grader had her regular amount of homework tonight. She was really stressing out about getting it done in time for Trick or Treating. I finally told her to let it go. We'll finish it in the morning before school, or I'll write a note to her teacher.

Up until this year, the kids have always gone to school the day after Halloween. Tomorrow and Friday, though, they have off for teacher workdays. I guarantee, though, that if school was in session my kids would be there!

Here the kids did not go to school last Friday or this Monday. DH and I were just discussing today it would have been nice if they had used Thursday and Friday for those work/conference days so the kids did not have to get up early tomorrow. But when my DS and DD were younger they did have school the day after Halloween. The schools should let some of the grandparents help with the planning. The kids would be much happier.:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

My kids are going to school tomorrow and I've also never heard of any parents allowing their kids to stay home the day after Halloween.

I did go to Catholic High school and we always had November 1st off. It was awesome!

As far as I know, everyone here goes to school, my son will be. He will be out of school Friday though to go to WDW. :)

Yup a normal day. I always feel so sorry for the teachers. They really end up with a wasted day because of a class full of tired kids strung out on sugar!

that's the most ridiculous thing i have ever heard and i only have a 7 month old but when he is 14 you better believe he is going to school the day after Halloween...i don't care if its a Sunday!!!!

Oh my. This is one more reason I worry about the future of our world. :sad2:

November 1 is All Saints Day and Catholic schools are closed in NY and always were.

I went to Catholic school and we never went to school on November 1st. It's All Saints Day (A Catholic Religious Holiday).

Our teachers (wisely) chose to have Nov 1st be one of their in-service days, so no school here. I think that was a great move for all involved.

If school was in, they would be there... but I am quite thankful its not. Sleeping in tomorrow! :thumbsup2
