Do your fingertips split in the cold weather?

The pain from this tiny little split in my fingertip is unbelievable! I get them every year, one after another.

Does anybody know of anything to cure or prevent these things? OUCH!

Yes! My fingertips split, crack, bleed, ooh, it hurts terribly too. I've found that Curel for Extremely Dry Skin (I think that's what it's called) works better than anything else. I have to remember to keep putting it on though, if I forget, and my skin splits, it hurts alot to put lotion on. It gets in the cracks and burns.

Cortisone cream helps.

Also, it will help to put vaseline on your hands and wear some cotton gloves overnight. It really does help. Don't put it on until your dh is asleep and he'll never see it. lol
Lotion will probably hurt the cuts until they are healed, but mineral oil and vaseline doesn't.

Also, once your cuts are healed up. Try gently rubbing them with a mixture of baking soda and some gentle soap. It will get rid of any dry skin.

Goodluck :)

My hands dry out in the winter, but thankfully they don't split and bleed. Once in desperation (don't laugh) when I was completely out of lotion, I used some shortening on my hands.

There is a product called Liquid Bandage that works very well on those cuts. It "paints" on with a little brush and dries to a clear finish that protects the cuts until they heal. It is waterproof, nearly invisible, stops the pain as the cut isn't constantly being irritated, and gradually flakes away as the cut heals.
Hope you can find it (I get it in a drugstore) and it works for you.

(cringes) ew I can only imagine how awful that must feel. I got a paper cut from hanging posters at work the other night and ran to the back room to bandaged it. The simplest of cuts and such can often be the most painful.

My girlfriend gets that and she tried doing a parafin (wax) treatment. She said it helped.

Gloves and hand cream. Don't do anything without gloves on. Hand cream everytime you wash your hands.

The parafin treatments work wonders to help heal sore, dry and split hands, but the key is gloves and hand cream.

I don't but I have a relative whose finger tips split and bleed during the winter. He tried creams (OTC and prescription), gloves, liquid bandaids, etc. and nothing worked. His dr. as a last resort said try lip balm or chapstick. And it worked!!!

Last year his fingertips didn't crack or split once!

Well I tell you that A & D ointment coupled with the white cotton gloves overnight works wonders for me.
The cuts do not heal sometimes because they are infected. ( Yes I have 30+yrs of excema under my belt) If you don't have some prescription cream on hand the cortisone or even I have used Hydrogen Peroxide prior to my hand cream treatments.

Anyway good luck as I am ignoring my hands right now and well they look like I am 100+yrs old.

Just bought some ZIM'S Crack Cream from Walmart. I had heard it advertised and thought it may help. It is for hands and feet. I think is was about $5

yep my split and crack all the time. I need lotion, plus from working out with my hands in gloves for hours they do that too

I had an aunt with extremely dry skin on her hands who SWORE by Neutrogena's Norwegian Formula hand cream. Although I don't have extremely dry skin, I have used it from time-to-time in the winter.

It's a really thick, vaseline-like, cream in a tube. It is AWESOME.

Mine do that too, especially on my knuckles. It's like the lines in my knuckles get so deep they bleed. This year is turning out to be particularly bad since I'm pregnant and have to use the bathroom (and thus wash my hands) approximately 5 thousand times a day.

Neutrogena is good. Neosporin can also be great, but I'm allergic to it and can only use a little bit.

Agree with the Norwegian Formula Hand Creme- it is the best. You can also use Bag Balm, but personally I prefer the Norwegian Formula....

I love the Moisturewear lotion from Avon. Mine were cracked
something awful last winter, and after a few days of using that,
my fingers cleared right up. I keep a tube under my counter at work
and it is a life saver. (er, finger saver):)

Some lotions contain alcohol which will dry your hands out even more. Might want to check the labels. My hands get very dried out this time of year -- so much so that they are red, bleeding and hurt all of the time. DH doesn't believe that when we're at WDW in another week they will clear up. I've starting wearing gloves outside to see if that will help any -- normally I just run out without them. I'm going to try some of the lotions mentioned here. If they don't work it's certainly going to be a long winter!

Not only my hands but my feet too:( ! I have a bleeding split area right now on both feet and one hand. Off to put something on them...

Once you get the cracks healed try the new Vasoline brand hand cream. It has a pink cap. My hands were a mess and now three days later I can already tell a difference. I also am wearing gloves outside now. Good luck.:D
