Do your children wear mouthpieces with braces?

My DS11 got braces on Tuesday and I forgot to ask his ortho. He's playing basketball and baseball today. I may need to make a trip to the drug store.

both of my older grandchildren played basketball and soccer and they were required to wear a mouth guard....when they had braces they got a special one from the othodontist.....and then when that got lsot they got one from walmart...just remember to wear it.....nothing worse then cut up lips and gums...

When I had my braces (10 years ago) I played soccer and I went without one. I couldn't wear it, the plastic taste literally made me sick to my stomach. I would call the office and see what they recommend.

This morning he says his mouth is too sore to wear one. I know he hurts but he also doesn't want to wear one.

I was in karate when I had braces. I had to buy a special mouthguard that would not stop the braces from doing their thing. In other words, you can't buy a plastic one that molds to the teeth because it will hinder the braces from moving things around.

Ask the orthodontist to recommend one, usually they are made of rubber.

My DD only wears a mouthguard for lacrosse. She doesn't wear one for soccer and basketball. The orthodontist we go to provides them as they can't use the ones you boil with braces.

I didn't wear one when I played softball, but then again no one on our team did. I'd have him wear one, especially since if he gets hit in the mouth, not only might it knock a tooth loose, it will trive his lips into the braces. And I hae had that happen, and it's no fun!

Luckily, our teams require mouthguards which makes my life easier since I have always insisted on them. I'm not super protective, I'm just staring at $12,000 in orthodontist bills and that's enough motivation for me.

Thanks, I didn't know that there were different mouthpieces for braces. I'm going to call his ortho and pick some up this week.

The cost of braces is outrageous. It will be $18,000 for all 3 of our children.
