Ok, we all know the movie and the song and the expression "a 9-5 job. But that is only 7 hours in you include a one hour lunch break. That equals 35 working hours. I have never worked 9-5 in my life, I have always worked either 8-5 or 7:30 to 4:30. With a one hour lunch, I get in 8 hours a day, 40 hours a week. I just don't understand why 9-5 has become synonymous with a desk job. It's a dumb question, but it's been nagging me for a week or so, not sure why. Anyway, there are thousands of Dissers, and I would just like to see if 9-5 is an actual in use schedule with anyone. :confused3
TIA!!

Nope, I work technically 8.30am-4pm with an hour off in total, but realistically I work 7.30am-6pm, plus between 4 and 10 hours a week at home. I teach. The job is amazing and the vacation time is sweet, though, so it's worth working 50-60 hours a week.

I work from 8:30am to 5:00pm with a 30 minute lunch break. Realistically I rarely get a 30 minute break, I eat and work or don't eat at all. I can't recall the last time I left close to 5 either, its usually at least 5:45 or 6:00

In my office, it's 8 hours plus lunch (which is 60 min). We have flextime, you can come in between 7:00 and 9:00. If you start at 7:00, you leave at 4:00; 9:00 leaves at 6:00. Our "core hours" are 8:00 to 5:00, meaning there has to be coverage during those hours.

I work 8:30-5:30 with an hour lunch break (I wish we could choose to leave early or come in later instead of taking a lunch).

I was just thinking about this the other day! I wonder if lunch was paid back when 9-5 was a 'norm' or if they just got paid for the 35 hours.

Nope I arrive at work at 7am and leave at 5:30pm with 45 minutes off for lunch (but I usually get about 30 mins). Then I work another 1 or 2 hours at home in the evening then between 2-6 hours on a weekend. I teach too so although I work long hours I do get nice breaks in school holidays when I don't have to work as much (just the at home stuff.)

When I worked it was 8am to 4:30pm with an hour lunch break. So we worked 7.5 hours a day.

I work 9-5:30 and I have an hour lunch - 30 mins is paid therefore why I work until 5:30. I am there at 9 and most of the time leave right at 5:30. There are a few times I get there before 9 and stay after 5:30 but not too often.

Nope. I work 8-4:30, half-hour lunch. But I work from home, so it really doesn't FEEL like working most of the time. :goodvibes

I work 7:30A-2:45P with a 30 min. lunch. I used to work 8A-4P with an hour lunch, but I have fantastic bosses that allow me to work around my kids' school schedules. :goodvibes

I'm retired, but for 36 years I worked 8:00 to 4:45 with 45 minutes for lunch.

When I last worked full-time (2008)- our company considered 35 hours per week as full-time with benefits - no one worked 40 hours per week. I suspect with the economic challenges over the last year that perhaps fewer and fewer companies take that stance.

On the flip side - the company never had to worry about paying hourly employees over-time because they made sure we never went over 40 hours per week.

I work 6am to 2:30pm with a 1/2 hour lunch. Thank God for flexible Managers... these hours allow me to pick the kids up from school!!

I think it depends on the office. At my last job it was a very small office (6 or 7 people total including me) and my hours were 9 to 5 with an hour (paid) for lunch. So I worked 35 hours a week but got paid for 40. It was one of my "perks". Now at this job I have now I work 8:00 to 4:30. I get half an hour for lunch unpaid and two 15minute breaks per day paid. My boss is nice enough to let me take them with my lunch as I don't smoke so I don't need morning and afternoon breaks. So I get an hour for lunch, 30 minutes paid, 30 minutes unpaid. :)

I don't work "regular" office hours but those in my office that do work 8:30 - 5:00. Those are our official office hours. They get 1 hour break for lunch, I believe.

Full time here is something silly like 34.5 hours, or something like that. It's not 40 for office staff.

Our office hours are 8:30 to 4:30, closed for lunch from 12 to 1. I don't work those hours at all, and neither do several other officers. Since people are on probation 24/7, we do home visits in the evenings and on weekends, have classes of the evenings, and sometimes do appointments after hours. (We always make sure there is at least one other officer around during after hour events, and there are some clients we insist on seeing during official office hours due to their personalities.)

As long as we get 35 hours of work in a week, our chief really doesn't care when we work.
