that instead of dumping money into the stock market you had just put it into DVC? Afterall, you'd have something fun to do instead of just watching your money fly out the window. Just imagine, you'd have thousands of DVC points and you'd be trying to figure out where to use them all up at, instead of looking at your 401K statement in bewilderment.

My thoughts exactly. We did this and I dont regret it 1 bit. After reading and studying the ENRON scandal and all the other corporate implosions, I decided I could spend my money and have fun with it and enjoy my children while they were young or I could trust someone else to do right with it.

I sit next to people who lost 100 of thousands and looked at me crazy while I was going on vacation every quarter.:goodvibes
I know where my money went and I have pics and memories to prove it and thousands of points for the next 40 or so years.

We didnt use retirement money, we still save for that in safe investments but we did have a windfall that we purchased most of our points with instead of buying a vacation home in Florida or investing it.

I do feel for all those that lost their future plans and am not gloating but very pleased with our decision to invest in family.
If the stock market was booming, I would still be pleased with our DVC purchase and what it has afforded us, so to me, investing in DVC was a no lose situation. I could not say that about stocks.

We too invested in DVC when the market was approaching 14K; and no we don't want to gloat, but the purchase of DVC has been a wonderful event to soothe our horrors concerning the 401K.

We visit "the World" twice a year and like magic the painful effects of our economy disappear for a short time. And when not in "the World", thoughts of the next trip just seem to smooth over the rough spots.

I agree with LIFERBABE, invest in the family, in the "ships" of our lives, for that is what it is all about; for when we leave this experience and go to the next, it is not the treasureships that count, but the relationships we have made AND maintained that make the difference.

My husband is the one who handles the investments - thank goodness. But I sure don't pass up the chance to remind him that the best investment we've ever made is our DVC - points at OKW, Vero and HH all for $62 a point or less and so many wonderful vacations. The flipside is that we are SO spoiled that even a nicer hotel doesn't cut it.

At least I didn't toss the money down the toilet on something that has no value whatsoever after it has been purchased.

Even though the market has gone down, my DVC contracts, especially the smaller ones, still have value.

Although I am not selling as its true value comes with my personal use.

Excellent sentiments:goodvibes I like that!

I also dont panic when others post about DVC and declining value of points. I've used my points for multiple trips for us and 2 Family reunions. This Christmas we are having a 2 week open house at THV for family to visit (based on occupancy:goodvibes ) as they please.

You will never be able to buy DVC on Ebay for $1 so Im not worried at all.

We dont expect to drive a car for 8 years and then sell it for what we paid for it. I could sell for $65 a point and still make money and I dont own HHI or VB, all my points are at WDW.

Sept. of 2008, my DH and I decided to pull my teacher's pension out, I had never become fully vested and it was just sitting in the government of MI bank account. I don't ever plan on going back to teaching so no chance of getting vested. I talked my wonderful DH into buying 200pts at AKV. We took a hit on our taxes, and at the time thought we had really made a gigantic mistake. Looking back at the decision today, if we had put that money in our 401K, we would have next to nothing. Thankfully I have 48 more wonderful years of vacations with my kids, future grandkids and some wonderful couple trips with that great DH who let me talk him into DVC. Take that stock market, you can't take my DVC away!!!!:rotfl:
