My kids have all wanted IPads but who can afford those little $700 things?

My DD just bought herself an iPad2 (16G WiFi) with babysitting and birthday money she saved. We ordered a refurbished model with a 10% discount and free shipping from Apple. It was $455. We have bought Apple refurbs before and know it's a good way to go.

We have 4 iPod touches, too...and 2 iPhones, and 2 iPads. I won't even talk about how many computers we have - its embarrassing.

My 17 month old has his own iPod (3rd gen) and can work any iDevice without any help whatsoever.

No, I have an iPhone 4s and I do want an iPad. If I don't get one this christmas I will splurge and get one over the winter or early spring.

Well I don't know why you care what my 17 month old does or does not have, but since you asked so nicely ...when the rest of the family upgraded to iPod 4s we gave our iPod 3s away except form one of them, which we gave to the 17 month old because we have tons of toddler apps and he knows how to work it and enjoys it. Is that ok?

ETA: And since you asked - nobody *needs* an iPod or an iPhone or an iPad, no matter how old they are.

well the iPad 3 comes out in March, so hopefully the iPad 2 will go down a bit more in price

I would like a tablet, but I refue to buy any Apple products. Can't stand that cmpany. Anyways a cheap altrnative would work just fine for me. I do have a Nook color that I adore.

Can you say why.

I want one sooooo bad!! Right now we have 4 yes 4 iTouches. there may be more in the house after christmas depending on what Santa brings the kids... Maybe we'll splurge and buy an iPad after the holidays... money is kinda tight right now, he's back in school, christmas is in a month, we are getting new windows in 2 weeks... I dont know if we can find the extra for one right now as much as I'd LOVE one for myself!

I disagree with that. I have a MacBook, iPad, iPod touch, and iPhone - I use them all for different purposes..

Honestly, I learned a few years ago that if there is something that I want, I should save up for it because anything else is simply going to be "not what I wanted." It's very much a personality thing- some people would be able to be happy with a "similar but very different" replacement and some wouldn't. I'd actually prefer to save that $$$ than buy something I don't really want.

Best example- I want an Iphone. I've been due for an upgrade since before the Iphones came out for Verizon and I could have very easily gotten an Android based phone as my upgrade. But I didn't because it wasn't exactly what I wanted and it would have been a waste of money in my mind. My phone is now over 3 years old (ancient for a cell ). Once the IPhone came out, I decided to wait for the Iphone5 which at that point was rumored to come out in 6 months. I'll grab a 4S in the week or so and be very happy.

We just dont have the extra money as much as I'd love one.. like I said we are getting all new windows in the house in 2 weeks and our roof sprung a leak with our last rain, my dryer died and I need a new oven... need I say more add in christmas for 4 kids and you got yourself all of our savings.... Poof! oh and we are also looking for a new car for him we are sharing one right now, hopefully with our income tax refund we'll be able to get one... *crossing fingers*

@knitster my dh is in college for IT right now. so far the only new gadget hes bought is a new computer... he wants more... but the money just isn't here right now. when my ds 3 was a toddler he also knew how to work the ipod.. they are great for waiting at the bus stop keeping them busy with easy flash card apps!
