Do you use the handicapped stall?

I didn't read the whole thread...I just wanted to mention a trend I've noticed lately.

A lot of establishments are installing the fold down changing tables in the handicapped accessible stall - probably because it's more roomy in there and it keeps the poop away from the sink.

So, I think there can be times when a mom or dad kind of gets stuck in that stall for reasons beyond their control.

i dont mind that - but PLEASE put the changing table back up when you are done!!! otherwise i cant fit into the stall, and sometimes they are mounted too high for me to put back up! just fold it when you are done and i am all set!

OK, everybody take a deep breath, look at what I said, and stop trying to make me look evil while you all love every bit of humanity.

I will say, just one more time...if you have a problem that cannot be contained within yourself. Be that diapers, whatever. And you feel that all of humanity needs to fall over dead to accommodate you or your relative that has that disability then you or they should not be there.

No, I am lucky I don't have any over riding disability but I can tell you this if I ever did have one that required sacrifice on people that I don't even know, I would not be seen there.

If I have a disability it is MY problem. It is not the problem of everyone else on the planet. I would never, ever demand that some stranger be inconvenienced or even aware of my problem. The world does not owe me anything. If I have a problem it is mine and mine alone. If reasonable accommodation is made, being handicapped accessible facilities in this case, that is all that is owed. If the extent of my disability cannot be met by those reasonable accommodations then I cannot participate, plain and simple.

You can all express "Wow" forever. I've seen all of you write about some little thing that irritates you about other people. You are not holier then I. If you read what I said, I am perfectly willing to accept people with disabilities and to even encourage them to participate as long as their participation isn't at the expense of others. One should not be made to feel guilty because they don't have a disability. If someones bowel problem is such that it is a real possibility that I might come in contact with it then a public facility is not the place for them. Like it or not. If the problem can be contained then there is no reason for them to not participate.

I made that statement because it started out a question about if it was OK to use a access stall when there was no one waiting to use it. The overwhelming response was sure, it's there for them to use but it isn't an exclusive club. When that answer wasn't satisfactory then the argument because a series of "what if's". What if they have a bowel problem and the can't wait, what if they have a bladder problem and they can't wait. If they cannot wait and they are being subjected to humiliation from a group of people that are hell bent on making sure everyone, regardless of ability get's included, then it is just wrong. I'm sure the embarrassment far outweighs any pleasure that is garnered by such a visit.

Not everyone is able to fit into every environment. Not everyone should try. If you had someone that had a phobia about crowds of people, would you advocate denying everyone else the right to admission because that one person would like to experience Disney but cannot stand crowds? Everyone stay out for that person?

I stand by what I said and if everyone decides to read other meanings into what I tried to explain, well there isn't anything I can do about that. Self righteous yourselves silly.

Hey chief, settle down. I just asked for some clarification.:confused3

I totally thought it. I've been watching this puppy since it started.

Speaking of puppies, I once had to wait for the accessible stall to change the baby (yeah, one of those arrangements). From the conversation the occupant was having, I thought it was another kid getting a change of pants. Not quite. It was a dimwit giving a snack dog a drink. :headache:

I'm quite impressed with myself. I don't think I've ever created such a long thread on any forum. Who woulda thought my longest thread creation would be about the potty?

You didn't do anything wrong! Some people just, unfortunately, have to complain. I use the handicap stall all the time, and not just when I have my big, honkin stroller with me! If the other stalls are taken, I have the right to use the bigger stall too!

I'm not surprised at all. Just don't make a poll asking if people use the cart corral at grocery stores. :headache: :rotfl:

I use the handicap stall if it is open because I have some pretty bad arthritis and have trouble standing - the grab rails really help. But I don't dawdle - if it is one of the stalls with the sink in the stall, I don't use that one to wash my hands since I can use a regular sink with no trouble. Frees up the stall for the next person whether that person is handicapped or not.

I have to agree with those who said any public restroom is to do what has to be done and GET OUT! I've never had a visibly handicapped person get in line while I was in line but I think I would let that person go ahead of me to use the handicapped stall just because I know that continence can be a problem for those with some physical disabilities. Besides, I can use a regular stall if I have to, it is just painful. A person in a wheel chair can't.

the handicapped stall is not just for people in wheelchairs - it s for anyone with need for a larger stall, grab rails, claustrophobia, someone who needs assistance, etc... you have every right to use that stall! i use it when i dont even have my cane with me because i have problems standing and dont want to hit my head on the toilet and drown - can you think of a worse way to die??

I agree with you, though... its a public restroom, not a nail salon... i once saw a person in a handicapped stall (luckily i didnt need it then) ON HER CELL PHONE pacing back and forth (or at least her feet were, i assume the rest of her followed)... seriously, its a potty.

do your business and get out!

Ok, I am trying really hard not to be bothered by goofyernmost's post. Using that logic then a kid who can't do long division fast enough shouldn't be in math class..because he is hindering the rest of the class. What? You are the ONLY kid who can't make a basket on the basketball team? GET OUT! You are holding everyone else back! :scared1: That's horrible logic. IMO, we, as a society, should be open and embrace other people..gee, we aren't back in the WWII era where everyone was expected to be the same..or you end up in a concentration camp. :scared1:

While I would never endorse a policy that those with a handicap should not be at WDW or other place, I think that some posters are reading too extreme of a take on goofyernmost's post. Our society, and especially WDW, has implemented many things to make public facilities easier or at least possible for those with a handicap. It is up to all individuals to respect those adjustments and make our world more accessible. With this being said, it should not be demanded that others make even more concessions that would endanger others or create unpleasant impositions on others. I, as a few others, have been treated rudely by people demanding even more and I think that that may be the point.

The reason that I am even venturing into this minefield was a situation I encountered last year at WDW. A woman in a non motorized wheelchair kind of cut us off as we entered a line (She was in the wheelchair but moving it by walking as she sat. As we were getting in line she came up fast walking the wheelchair from the side.) No big deal, we let her go in front of us. But she then turned and asked me to push her through the que. I have very painful arthritis and was bothered by the fact that she expected me to push her wheelchair. I am in so much pain I can't even imagine being able to move a wheelchair by my feet as fast as this lady was doing. I was condemned by several individuals on this board for being upset at this request but I still think that this was an inappropiate request. I am sorry for whatever reason that this lady needed the wheelchair but she should not have tried to negoiate WDW if she couldn't do it without expecting complete strangers to push her. By rushing ahead of us into the que, she really left us with no option.

And as far as following logic, we encounter every day situations where restrictions are sometimes placed on individuals. People with small infants are frowned upon if they let their infants cry through a movie and destroy everyone elses enjoyment. Children who are advanced in Math or other subjects are put into special classes so that normal children don't slow their progress. And around here, if you can't make a basketball goal you would get cut from most teams. These are just a couple of situations that come to mind. Unfortunately, I don't get to do everything I want if it adversely affects others.

It would be more like removing the kid who can't make a basket from the PE class. Teams have tryouts and cutting kids is a part of that. Or the math example was good--removing a kid who needs a little extra help.

asta, I think the woman you encountered at WDW was out of line for making that request. If she needed a bit of help getting around a corner, for example, that she didn't anticipate, that would be different, but this is an issue she knew she'd be having and probably had in every line she went in.

I still, in my mind, go back to what I posted a page or two ago... There but for the grace of God go I...

When my son was having surgery earlier this year, I used the medical staff only bathroom. It was the closest to the recovery room, and there weren't any staff members in there at the time. Do you think that's ok?

I just want to say that it has been very entertaining reading all these posts on this subject.

That said, I agree with what seems to be the majority: I would definitlely use a HA stall if no other was availible, and that lady was way out of line.

Now I shall check back later. popcorn::
