Do you use a chore chart for your kids?

I have a few questions for you.

Where did you find the one you use?

Did you laminate it?

and where do you keep it? Fridge? bathrom?



I have a confesison to make every chore chart Ive ever found I have failed miserably with

I think Im going to have laminate it and put it in the kids bedroom hallway.

They really need this I think. Need to be able to have some sort of checklist to look at every morning.

I know if I dont leave a list when I go on vacation it wont get done.


Anyway, I could really use some help!

We've bought, printed, and made charts for the kids. NONE have been successful. I think my children are actually slugs in disguise!! Paying the kids for their work (X amount of money for each job completed) has worked for a week or two at a time.

What we do in the summer is each child gets one level of the house to clean, they pick the level at first and then they rotate each week. There are certain jobs that must be done on that level and they are responsible for taking care of all of that. They do pretty well most of the time and I think that is because they have some say in what they do. Each level has a bathroom so that evens the yuck job out.

Charts didn't work for me because it ended up being too much supervision and busy work on my part.

After reading another thread about housework (search for housework thread)on the DIS I wrote my own weekly chore chart with color-coded jobs for the entire family (all 3 of us). We've been using it for three weeks.

It's helping, but we're not strict about following it. I don't expect every job to be done everyday, but eventually the whole house should be in better shape, simply by tackling chores routinely instead of waiting for things to build up to a point where they're so out of control that they need to be done.

There's also a daily chart of 6 items, reminders of what is to be done everyday, that are divided equally.

I try to provide incentives, like if they get their work done for the week they will choose what to do on the weekend.

well a chore chart wasn't really needed with ds as that is the only child we have and he just does his chores every day. he has two on the weekdays and sat and 4 on sunday.

but...........when we were potty training him we did have the pee and poop star board. 1 star for pee and 2 for poop ( i just made them for the month on poster boards) at the end of the week we added up the stars and that is how many m&m's he got to have.
for some reason this worked like a charm, one month and he was dry all day and through the night.
doesn't really help the OP but, it is just another chart and is funny besides. ( at least to me, as ds doesn't think so now he is going to be 9 in may)

I just found a wipe off board chore chart at Target!!! I think it's great - it has magnetic starts to track if the chores are done. It's a weekly view.

Good luck, Bin! I've had to create a chore chart for *myself* I actually created it in Excel so it would be specific for me and what I want to do each day. I just check box when I am done and clear it all at the end of the week. Since I like my computer having it up there daily helps me a lot!

We've got one that works well for my kids. Both of them are used to "pulling tickets" at school, i.e. have to pull a ticket for bad behavior. You don't want to end up on red!!

Anyway, I kinda combined that at home. Each child has a set number of chores (number of chores x age). I just run a new sheet off the computer each Sunday morning and stick it up on the refrigerator. They get a sticker for each one of the chores they complete. They also have to put "bad" stickers on the sheet - there's a section for that too. They both equate the bad stickers with pulling a ticket and don't like it. At the end of the week, add up all the good stickers, subtract the bad stickers (making sure I do it in front of them so they realize how much they lost) and multiply that times $.10. Works out to about $5 for my 8-year-old and $3 for my 5-year-old.

Plus had the added advantage of my DD being able to count by 10's way before the rest of her class could last year.
