For a stay over 2 days we always unpack.

Put hang up things in the closet and all folded stuff in the drawers.

I wear mostly polo/golf type shirts and shorts.

My shorts are always hanging upside down on those clip hangars.

I usually grab a handful of shorts on hangars and put them on one side of my suitcase. Then grab all my shirts and t shirts, on hangers, and put them in the other side of my suitcase, draping them in kind of folded in half.

Then my socks, underwear, shoes and other assorted things fit in around the edges.

Then at our destination I'm just grabbing 2 fistfuls of hangars and hanging them up, and putting away a few handfuls of the other assorted items for the drawers.

I got some packing cubes for Christmas so it's going to make the putting away of all my non-hanging items much quicker, just leaving them in the cubes.

Since I'll pack for a week in a carryon, I use every bit of it and things are "scattered" in the suitcase. By unpacking, I can put my underwear all together, my socks all together, shirts next to each other as well as pants.

Clean clothes being in touch with a surface that POSSIBLY used to have dirty clothes doesn't bother me in the slightest. Think of all the places you sit down... an office chair, a restaurant chair, at a movie, public transportation (maybe). Your clothes are now in contact with some place that someone's dirty clothes may have touched.

To say nothing about touching elevator buttons, door handles, railings, desks, tables, pens, etc.

I use packing cubes. All my socks & undies are in one. All my shirts are in another. So similar to organizing by putting things in drawers but it is already done and in my suitcase.

I may sit on something that someone's dirty clothes have been but I am not sitting on them NAKED. I am not putting my clean underwear in the same space as where someone's dirty underwear. Nope. Not doing it. If I ever was to do it, you better believe I would be using Clorox wipes before I put my clothes in them.

Ahhh, the shoes. Love when there's a designated shoe spot somewhere near the entry. If there's any type of basket it becomes the shoe basket, if there's a closet that's the shoe closet. On another issue....I really like when there are drawers in the bathrooms, I hate a cluttered counter, especially with makeup products and brushes etc that leave residue and hair. First thing I do when emptying bathroom products is grab a glass or container from the kitchen to use as a toothbrush holder for the countertop. I also stick the largest bowl I can find on the dining table or entry table for "stuff"....keys, chapstick, all the little stuff that gets easily lost when emptying pockets.
This is pricey (for me) but has become an essential travel item for me. It keeps all of the bathroom clutter in check

I love my packing cubes. My husband is the opposite and just throws all of his clothes into his suitcase. The cubes make packing and unpacking so easy.
Same with my husband I'm the packing cube person and he is so not that way but when I can use them they work great for keeping things separated and organized. I miss them when I can't realistically get them to work because they aren't tetris-ing well enough in the suitcase.

I’m not bothered by sharing public spaces or touching things. That’s what hand sanitizer is for.

But when I think about someone’s stinky socks, dirty underwear, pit stained shirts, etc…ripening in the drawer…..ick. Lysol wipes first, then my clean clothes. 👍🏻

I am once again surprised that the majority of people seem to unpack. I honestly don't find it difficult to "live out of a suitcase" while in a hotel. I don't see it as much different then needing to looking through things in a drawer.
When I was single, I’d live out of my suitcase, but when I started travelling as a family of four, we needed to utilize all the space, so drawers it is.

I think the unpacking part for people seems more related to a feeling, like for those who like to unpack in a more general way there's a psychological positive feeling from doing so where they find it to be less stressful and then traveling-party specific there may be other benefits to fully unpacking.

I think the reason why cruises are much more of a shared experience is because of the practical nature to them. Even people who mention longer number of days on a trip a normal hotel room to me is still a distinct different experience than a cruise ship.

Hangers, yes. Drawers, no. As soon as I arrive, I set up my suitcase either on the luggage rack in the room, low dresser, or spare bed, if we have one. I take out anything that needs to be hung (dresses/skirts, dress pants, button-down shirts/blouses, etc.), put them in the closet, and put my toiletry bag in the bathroom or sink area (it has a hook, so hang it up off the counter if possible). I take clothes out of the suitcase as I need them and put dirties back in, separated in a plastic bag.

DH likes to use the drawers and unpack all his stuff. To each their own. We typically have just one carry-on suitcase each, and have learned to travel light, but rarely go anywhere longer than a week to 10 days.

Totally fine. You do you. I'm just saying it doesn't bother me one bit. My underwear is rightside out, folded, and put in the drawer. If there's some "dirt" (because I can't spell the word I want to use. :P), it's going to be on the OUTSIDE of the underwear (or socks, or shirt, shorts, pants, whatever), not in contact with my skin. It just doesn't bother me.

I tend to unpack most of the time, especially as a lot of my clothes tend to need ironing or at least hanging to get a little less creased. I've found if I don't unpack then my clothes just end up completely jumbled in my suitcase whereas at least in drawers and hangers everything is neat and orderly.

I'm terrified of bedbugs so I always do a bedbug check first thing. I don't unpack my clothes and I never put luggage or shoes on the bed, just in case. Living out of a suitcase honestly isn't that bad because I typically pack outfits together and store any dirty clothes in a plastic bag. I will unpack my toiletries onto the countertop after wiping it down and hang up anything that might need to be steamed that day, though.

Yes and No

Yes, if I'm staying longer than a few days. I will hang up certain clothes and put certain items in the drawers. This is mainly to prevent clothes from getting to wrinkled while sitting in the suitcase and getting shuffled around when I'm trying to find something.

No, If it's just a weekend get away - I can't be bothered to unpack and then repack for a quick stay.

I didn't read all the replies, but I saw dirty laundry getting discussed somewhere, and I have a cloth bag that is for dirty laundry. We all put our items in this bag so everything stays together. Then when it's time to leave, my DH will put his unused items in his suitcase into my suitcase, and we put the dirty clothes bag in his suitcase. Then when we get home, I wash the dirty clothes bag and get it ready for the next adventure. My mom gave this to me eons ago, and I don't leave home without it.

I was reading another thread about the removal of drawers in a hotel might make someone rethink staying there. So that got me curious. Do you unpack when you are at a hotel? Use the drawers or hangup your clothes?

I NEVER unpack. I keep all my clothes in my suitcase. I usually just pile the dirty clothes on the floor next to my suitcase until it is time to leave when I fold them, put them in a plastic bag and back in the suitcase.
Half and half for me. I unpack button-up shirts like Roosevelt’s shirts. I leave things like underwear and pants and T-shirts in my suitcase.

I put No never, but there should be another category in my opinion,,lol.
I mostly don't unpack but I do hang up nice clothes that I don't want wrinkled.
Most of the time, there are only a couple of "nice" things to hang up. The rest is in the suitcase.

I unpack my packing cubes! I don't put my clothes directly in the drawers. I have tops in one cube, bottoms in another, socks/etc in another. I usually bring a plastic bag for dirty clothes that I'll keep in the closet or maybe a bathroom, depending on the layout. So I kind of unpack. Oh, I do hang blouses and dresses or things I would normally hang up at home.

However, now that I am learning that some people use the drawers for their dirty clothes, I may start living out of the suitcase again.....
I was thinking the same thing. 😆

Generally I live out of my suitcase if it's 3 nights or less. (Except for a fancy dress if I need one. - I'll hang that up.)

For a long trip like a week at Disney, I would generally swipe the drawers with Lysol wipes and unpack.

For a short/carry-on only trip, I'll bring a trash bag for laundry. If it's long enough that we bring the "big suitcase" I have a spare pop-up hamper that fits in it.

I almost put a depends on how long and a depends on the clothes.

My personal travels have never included anywhere where "nice" clothes were necessary. It is almost always jeans & t-shirts/sweatshirts. I am sure if I was attending a wedding or something were nicer clothes were dress code, I would hang those.
