Do you turn off your computer each night?

My Dell hard drive went kaput a few days ago. Luckily, I was still under warranty. I must give Dell good marks for their service. I had no problems getting a new hard drive installed in my home. The technician assured me that the computer failure was not due to anything I did. Still, I have to wonder. I was wondering if it is better to keep turning off your computer or shut it down each night? In the past I have left it on unless I was going to be away for a few days.

I shut it down when not in use. And shut off the power strip.

most computers are "vampire" electronics and continue to draw power when shut down.

also if its on and running, and your internet connection remains active, hackers love idle computers.

I hardly ever turn off my laptop- DH turned his off after every use.
His laptop was HP, mine was a Dell. Both were purchased in 2006.

His died last year, mine is still running. He got a desktop to replace it and gets irritated if I leave it on overnight.

I don't think it's a coincidence my laptop still works but it might be. ;)

I do. I'd rather it didn't use electricity all night. I am also paranoid about it catching on fire. My co-workers monitor caught fire recently. Thank goodness we were at work at the time.

well, hard drives spin and fans turn on and off, its just a matter of time till the hard drive is done spinning.

we have had hard drive last for years, and some only a few months before they gave up the ghost.

backup your data!

We have a dell desktop that we never shut down.. we bought it in 2005 LOVE dells!

I never shut mine down. I always put it in sleep mode. If I am going away for more than a day, I will shut down, otherwise it goes to sleep. I am on my 3rd Dell and have NEVER had a problem with doing this. Never fried a hard drive, fan, over heated, etc.

I never shut mine down at night...I put it in sleep mode as well. But if I am going away I certainly turn the computer completely off.

I have read that turning your computer off at night along with unplugging it from the wall socket is the only way you will save electricity. NOT DOING THAT. :headache:

Other then when traveling my laptop is always on. The vast majority of hard drive failures occur at startup.

1 of our 6 PCs has been on for 6 years...shut off to move and then back on for 5 years! It's our dinosaur and just keeps going. PS...we have 5other PCs the kids use for gaming and mom for DISsing!

My desk top is a Dell unit purchased in July of 2003. I only shut down if I'm going to be gone for several days. It's still chugging along after all these years.

I put mine in standby every night but rarely power it off.

off every night. ZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.......................

Yes - I shut mine off - as does DD and my DGD.. DD's DH leaves his on though (Dell), has had it several years, and so far, so good..:thumbsup2
