***"It would be interesting to see the tipping patterns of those who have been in these types of jobs compared to those who have not been."***

My tech's are very well paid & their position is in no way considered a tipping position. However, it's interesting that when a tech does receive a tip from a customer, generally that customer works in a field where tipping is a normal occurance.

Lexxiefern, you sound familiar to me. The way and amount we tip is due in large part to the fact that my DW as a teenager worked as a waitress in Maine during her summer vacations. It would be interesting to see the tipping patterns of those who have been in these types of jobs compared to those who have not been.

I was born and raised in a very big tourist destination, where many, many of our jobs our tip positions. I can honestly not think of one person I know from the Jersey shore, who has not worked in a tip position at some point in their life. On a whole, people in this area tend to be very good tippers. It is familiar to us, many people earn the majority of their income from tips around here, so consequently tipping is second nature. Definitely people that have experiences with tip positions are usually much better tippers. You KNOW what it is like to work for tips and tend to reward others in those jobs more freely than others may.

You spill an entire pan of bacon grease on the carpeting at your OKW villa. Unless you want to rent a rug doctor, you'll need a little help from housekeeping with this clean-up.

Do you tip the housekeeper? Or, do you not tip because Disney has classified that position as "non-tipping"?

In that case I would tip, like I do when they bring me something I request (which I already mentioned). I would also pay for the cost of the cleaning because it would be an incredibly STUPID thing to do to bring a pan of bacon grease into the carpeted area.

Personally, I not only think the guest should tip--and tip well, the housekeeping staff that cleans this mess; but the guests should also be charged an extra feel for additional damage to the unit. Just as any other damage, theft, additional cleaning/desantizing, etc should also be charged to the guests that occupied the unit.

Thanks for the clarification. Fortunetly, STUPID things never happen in DVC units.

Why tip them when they come tomy room to bring me towels and make sure the garbage is taken out which we take out every day anyhow. We make the beds do the dishes and the laundry if they are going to do all those things for us maybe we will tip them but they do not so why tip.

To be nice.

HBC I understand itis to be nice but honestly they come to the room one time a week and there is really nothing they have to do other than take the garbage and towels my wife and I even vaccuum the carpet because we have messy eaters for children not that you can expect much from a 1 year old and a 2 year old really. But we always have the carpet clean and dishes done and put away etc so the only thing they really do is the towels and garbage my wife even cleaned the bathroom on our last trip I told her she was crazy and that we were on vacation but she didn't care.

We always tip (sometimes too much!). We are of the belief that we have always been fortunate in our lives and especially lucky to be DVC members and have this feeling of wanting to give back. We feel that we are so lucky to be able to be members and have such wonderful vacations that we want to be generous to the people who help to make vacations special. Please don't think that we are wealthy, just happy middle class.

DSNY FN: I respect your opinion, we just disagree. I also appreciate the good discussion as opposed to an all out debate on this topic. I'm not going to repeat what I already posted earlier about good deeds but wanted to give credit to WOW. I share this opinion.

Oh not a problem HBC I agree we do have differing opinions on it and that is great it makes the world much more fun than if everyone thought and felt the same I think it would be one boring place if that were the case.

We tip for each service, that way if the staff changes they are still covered.

Just as we would tip each meal server, we tip each housekeeping server.

Perhaps by you, but not by me.
Tell you what, you do your thing, I will do mine. I am not on this earth to please you nor are you on this earth to please me.
Tip you self into a tizzy, I will do what I feel is correct.

Gail, it's none of my business, but I think you might have misinterpreted Johnnies post.

I think he was mockingly saying something about all of us, that WE would never do anything STUPID in our unit. He was joking.

Or at least that's how I read it.

I think I would have read it that way if he had not been , IMHO, hounding me because I don't tip because it is not a tipped position. I think he was mocking me because I said carrying a pan of bacon grease into the carpeted area was STUPID.

Ok, I voted NO on the tipping. I don't feel that taking out the trash, and getting me towels is qualified for tipping.
Besides, I am from the "old school", my mamma told me to pick up, so when we leave, we place all towels, etc in the bathtub, put wash rags in tub, strip the beds and place sheets and bedspread in 2 piles. I also start the dishwasher, etc. I do everything BUT vacuum! NOW, this is just ME, not everyone. My wife and I try to make things easier because I KNOW how hard they work, just trying to make things easier for them. I also put all trash in 1 bag, and tie it up, and put it in the kitchen. We have done this at the Beach, DVC, etc, everywhere we go.

By the way, I feel our dues go the mousekeeping, and nobody has answered that question: Do our DUES pay for mousekeeping?
If so, I bet some people will change their tipping habits!
JMHO!

Yes, our dues pay the housekeeping staff.

Why would someone calculate a tip on a "per day" basis for a service that is not rendered daily?

If you were to stay at a say Poly Resort you should tip housekeeping per day at the end of your stay. So say you had stayed 5 days it would come out to be $10.00, which would be $2.00 a day. I guess it is just a habit That I have carried over from staying at non DVC resorts to tip housekeeping.

If I stay at the Poly (or any resort with daily or twice-daily housekeeping), I tip daily. It's unlikely you'll have the same housekeeper every day. Also, your room may get a little extra attention each day because of the tips. But if you wait until you check out, all your tip money may go to someone who may be cleaning your room for the first time.

At a DVC resort, your room is clean when you check in, and it will be cleaned for the next guests when you check out. Does it really make sense to tip twice as much for a 4-night stay as for a 2-night stay (assuming you vacate the room in the same condition)?

Good post deehr I agree with all we do in the room mousekeeping has very little to do when they come in and our dues are paying for them to do the work that we ultimately make easier for them. If you leave you room a pig stye then sure tip them to clean your mess but otherwise no.

Not trying to debate anyone.....I respect everyone's opinion as I hope you all would mine. But, the way I see it, housekeeping scrubbed the villa spotless for me to move in and they scrub it spotless after we leave. I feel our dues, as someone mentioned, do nothing more than pay them barely above minimum wage. I just feel it's a nice thing to do for a service-type line of work. But I totally understand how people would not see it this way.
As someone else mentioned, if I stay at a full-housekeeping hotel I also tip daily, smaller amounts, then leave a larger tip upon check-out.
