We pick up our room before leaving each day and keep it as neat as possible but we still tip! Fortunately, we've never had serious mousekeeping issues that made me sorry I left a tip. I'm so grateful to come back to a nice, clean room after a long day in the parks. Not to mention the other things: towel animals, stuffed animals & dolls arranged, a friendly "Aloha" to my DD7. These extra touches make me even more appreciative of their work. DD7 loves to leave the tip each day along with a little note, thanking them. They even write back to her, which just thrills her!

Well said......Mousekeeping goes out of their way with towel animals, setting up the kids toys, etc & if they don't deserve a tip I'm not sure who does:confused3
If your kids being thrilled when they return to their room isn't worth a tip
I'm not sure what you think "deserves" a tip.

Sorry but we don't tip the mousekeeping. We feel that it is their jobs and we already paid for it when we pay the room fee. Also we never had exceptional service to warrent a tip. I would sure hope that given the rates Disney charges you would not have to tip in order to have your room properly cleaned . If that is the case, maybe Disney should share some of their profits by giving their employees higher wages. I think the room fees are high enough to not warrent someone to feel obligated to tip the mousekeeping.

I was talking to a fellow server at work, her sister works as a maid at a local hotel. She said she hardly ever got a tip, so it must be a Disney thing..:confused3 Now two years ago I gave the DVC maid 10.00 when she did trash and towel service. Last year I put money on the stand next to the bed daily..

First off, you're never going to get everyone to agree on this issue. If Disney prints a 'Do Not Tip These People' brochure for the resorts, then I'll follow those rules. I've always tipped housekeeping. No matter where I've stayed.
Second, I feel like housekeeping is more of a personal service. They are cleaning up after me. I'm not a messy person. However, when I'm on vacation, I'm not making the bed or dumping the trash. It's worth a couple of bucks to have someone else do it. I mean, I paid over $1600 for a week, what's $2 a day as long as they do a good job.
Third, I used to be a housekeeper for a large hotel chain. It was a second job for extra money. I worked different floors during the week. That's why I tip every day. It's a lot of work if you do it right. A lot of work for minimum wage.
Last, reality check - There are people losing their jobs all over this country and living out of their cars. :sad2: You don't know what's around the corner. I try to remember that I am blessed to be able to go to WDW. Again, $2/day, no big deal.

I have not read the other responses. I will say that at disney I always tip mousekeeping. I do envelopes and make them all pretty and even put a special thank you from my family on them. I have no idea why, I know you do not have to. Just seems to feel right. BTW, I tip 5.00 a day for me, df and two kids. FWIW

If you know Anaheim from the "inside" - you would understand the humor.

It's true this is one of the challenges on the Dis boards.....we are never going to all agree.

I have always tipped mousekeeping & will continue to tip because I think it is the right thing to do.
For all the gripping about how much WDW now costs & "it should be included in the thousands I pay" I simply say if you have spent $4,000 on a vacation will $5-$10 a day really make a difference?

For those that have suggested Disney paying more to CMs come on...we all know how poorly CMs are paid. If it was ever decided that pay would be increased there would be more complaining that rates have gone up to compensate CM's hourly rates increasing.:confused3

Let me share my thoughts about TOWEL ANIMALS! These have caused so many "problems" my kid didn't get one, my kid only got one, why didn't we have new ones everyday?, why weren't our stuffed animals set up like they were reading or watching tv?
If that doesn't deserve a tip I don't know what does.

We are generous tippers to waitstaff but do not generally tip hotel maids. In the U.S., tipping servers is universally accepted and they make below minimum wage. There is no agreement on hotel maids (interesting discussion on this same topic is going on right now at flyertalk), and they do make at least minimum wage, so they gotta go out of their way before I will tip. I did tip Mousekeeping once because I felt the service was exceptional and warranted it.

I always tip mousekeeping. I generally stay in DVC units, so there is no daily housekeeping service and I don't expect better service as a result of my tip; I simply do it because I feel that cleaning other people's toilets is a yucky job and should pay well! I usually give around $7 on the last day of my stay, plus or minus a couple of dollars depending on how much cleaning needs to be done. For example, I recently had a timeshare stay (not on-site) where I used only half of a "lock-off" (that's a suite that divides into two separate halves), so I tipped just $5 because I knew the housekeeper wasn't going to have to do a full cleaning; she (or, I suppose, he) would be paid for cleaning both halves of the suite when only one half had been used.

Several people here have said that mousekeeping at WDW is a reasonably well-paid position. I'm curious as to how much the housekeeping staff makes. Anyone know?

We were told at the Beach Club they start at "under $7.00 p/hour". I consider that far from a "living wage" especially when you consider how hard they work.

Yes, we tip every day. I make up envelopes that say:

To: Mousekeeping
Thank you!
From: The Simko Family

I add a Disney sticker or two and put the envelope on the bathroom sink, propped up so the housekeeper can see it. I also add any special request like needing an additional towel or two.

The tip is $1 per day per person. I had one mousekeeper come to our room as we were packing up and personally thank me. It is my pleasure to tip someone for cleaning up after my family when it is usually our job at home! :goodvibes

Considering that I know someone who worked there for ten years and made $11/an hour, I would feel terrible if I didn't tip them. I figure if I can afford to stay at a deluxe resort the least I can do is add $5 a day for the maid.

Exellent point!

At $11 p/hour the mousekeeper makes $22,440 as an annual salary.

Entry level salaries are just below $7 ------ at $7 p/hour their annual salary is $14,280.

Don't forget Disney prefers part-time employees so they do not have to support any employee benefits.

For us - we hope our modest daily tip will let a mousekeeper....take her children to a Disney movie on the weekend...maybe buy an extra gallon of milk. Hardly a hardship for us and could make a big difference for the mousekeeper.

Curious...do you tip the mousekeeper on the cruise?

I most definately tip on a DCL cruise (and all other cruises). They are considered tipped positions and don't make minimum wage. It is clearly stated in their literature that you should tip and they leave envelopes. I believe it is around $10 per day, but that includes wait staff.

Disney mousekeepers are not tipped positions and they do not encourage tipping, so I generally don't tip, although I have tipped.

I wouldn't tip out of pity, I would tip because I received exceptional service. I work in a job where I make very little. I could work at a higher paying job, but I choose to work where I work, and let me tell you most people would say my job is a heck of a lot harder than theirs and I don't receive tips. I also don't receive any benefits. Disney has great benefits, even some great perks for their part-time people (I have a friend who works there a few times a year just to keep her great part-time benefits).

I tip very well to tipped positions, though.
