Honestly, until I came on this board the thought never crossed my mind. In 2005 that was our first "Real" Family vacation before then we had never gone anywhere for an entire week. We never left a tip and now I feel terrible because we didn't. We are going back in Sept and I will leave a tip.

I do NOT tip the Magical Express Bus Drivers though, I think it is terribly tacky that some of them come right out and say tip are appreciated or don't forget to tip your bus drivers.

I think they only do those if they think there is a child in the room.

I'm starting to find the whole tipping thing in the US super confusing!! All this talk about discretionary tipping and optional tipping with servers and housekeepers, I wish WDW would print off a guide for those of us who are not American!

We did tip our housekeepers last time, $2-$3 a day I think because I was following what i'd read on here (didn't get any towel animals btw ;) )

But after reading what some of you wrote on how its not a tipping position and they earn and are in the same category as a server in a shop it seems unfair to tip a housekeeper and not the cashier at my counter service or my favourite souvenir shop.

On principle it seems wrong now to tip :confused3 Thank goodness my next trip is DVC, no one to come clean up for us :lmao:

Disney did at one point put an insert into the bill folder at restaurants, "For our international guests..." This went into the details of how much to tip the restaurant servers. I don't know if they still do that.

I wasn't aware that they made the same as the shopkeepers. I did know that they make the same as the custodians in the theme parks (who clean up other people's poo in the hot, sticky Florida summer humidity). I figure if anyone making that amount of money deserves a tip it is the custodians.

We tip daily but sometimes mousekeeping doesnt take the tips so we save them and put it all together for the last day....Ive heard that they really arent supose to accept tips....wondering if maybe thats why on some days we get back to the room and the tips still sitting there????....anyway the majority of the time they accept it. we tip $5-$10 a day....Happy Tipping!

So if they are a non-tipping position and they are not supposed to accept tips why do people get so upset that some people don't tip :confused3 . I sometimes tip, usually on the last day. I try to clean up the room before we leave each day because I don't want anything thrown out that shouldn't be thrown out..and I don't like to leave any room messy.

That is a very good question. I suspect the only folks who know the answer to that question reject the premise of your question, so unfortunately no answer is forthcoming. :(

I think some (maybe many?) people didn't know that as fact. I've heard it only on Disbords and have never seen any documented proof of what is and isn't a tipping position at Disney.

But, still, I am unsure why some people get so upset over someone else's tipping etiquette or lack thereof.

I followed this link from another website on Disney jobs: http://www.disney.go.com/DisneyCareers/wdwcareers/hourly/

It says people who work in merchandising, attraction CM's etc earn $6.90 an hour to start and housekeepers earn $6.90 plus 35 cents extra hourly incentive (incentive for what?!!)

So I guess they earn a wee bit more. Don't know about the custodians.

The last time DIS members did any significant research on this, this is what we found:

somebody found this a while ago

pay per hour

Attractions: $6.80
Transportation: $9.15
Food And Bev $6.80
Characters: $6.95
Attendant $6.85
Magical Express. $7.50
Custodial: $6.80
Housekeeping. $6.80
Lifeguard: $7.40
Sales Merch: $6.80
Ticket Seller: $6.80
Vac Planner: $7.25
"Food & Beverage" above refers to those quick service cast members. Not your servers. They do get paid a "tipped" wage.
that is correct. I work at one of the full-service restaurants and make less than 1/2 of that.

Are these for real? I am paying $100 for scrambled eggs to see someone who is making $6.95 per hour???? You would think there is a big enough profit margian there to allow Disney to increase the pay for these people who make our dreams come true.

Oh, and as for the tipping, we left a few dollars per day on our last trip. One day we returned to the room at around 4:00 having been at TL all day and having a 5:30 ADR at San Angel Inn. That meant all 3 of us had to shower and make it to Epcot in 1.5 hours. No easy thing to accomplish!! When we got to the room, the housekeeper had just got to our room and had not started cleaning (keeping in mind I pull up the covers and straighten our piles of stuff so no one else has to "deal" with our mess even though I am tipping someone to do so....) The tip was still on the bathroom counter where we left it. I politely asked the lady to leave us the clean towels and no need to do any further since we were in a rush. She politely said sure and as she went to her cart for towels, she slipped the tip into her pocket.

Now, $5 isn't going to make or break me - the money isn't the point. I just found it dis-tasteful to take the tip for not doing anything and taking it right in front of me no less.

That was my only issue with tipping and won't stop me for tipping on future trips. Not a huge deal, but seemed odd to me.

Pay rates rarely have anything to do with profitability. Disney, like all the other employers in the area, pay prevailing pay rates -- indeed, Disney jobs are considered among the best-paying jobs in the area.

Yes, I tip every day of our trip, I only tip $5 even if it just my husband or me, or my daughter and grandson.

We do not tip. Never heard of tipping a housekeeper before seeing it here. I think it is an odd practice but you are free to do whatever makes you happiest. Sometimes tipping is more along the lines of just wanting to bring cheer to others. That's perfectly fine if you want to spread cheer that way.

We do. Not because we have to, just to show we appreciate them. We also will leave any extra water, snacks after we've checked to see if they want it.
