Yes, we tip each day. Our son got very ill requiring an entirely new mattress in the middle of the night and they switched it out right away.

Nice try at the veiled refernce, but I don't think anyone should be considered a braggard because they provide a gratuity.

Consider it a veiled reference if you want. It wasn't. It was based on people I worked with who received quite a kick out of making another woman we worked with feel bad because she couldn't afford to tip. Comments were made to her that she maybe didn't need to be going to WDW if she couldn't afford to pay for everything she needed to, including tips. FWIW, the person I'm referring to is also on this board and for the sake of the lady in question, I was trying not to be personal enough that it would embarrass her. I'll go back and see what other posts you may be referring to, I answered the poll and posted a comment without reading the other responses.

BTW, when someone insists on talking about how much you spend on your trip and how much you tip and how that is more than some people spend on their entire meals, that is bragging. Especially when done in front of the person who can't afford as much. As I said, I don't know the people posting (other than 2 people) and didn't know if it applied to them or not, it is simply put bragging when done as I described.

Great idea, we leave in the next few weeks....better start origmai folding. What a great way to start each day :wizard:

We do the same! My wife loves to leave little bows and animals and such. Just a couple of bucks a day as a thank you and to give back some of the magic.

Probably ought to be careful about calling others braggards when your forum name is "Yacht Club Family".

:lmao:

:confused3 Could be, it does indicate our favorite resort but could be taken wrong, like a lot of screen names.

...why I even bother to read these boards anymore is beyond me sometimes. Have fun all, I'm done. .

Nothing wrong with their user name, just tells who they are. That is pretty much what everyone does when picking a forum name, they think of what they are like, what their interests are. I am MemoryMaker due to being a scrapbooker. Pretty simple. If you like the Yacht Club, you pick that name...for a DIS forum, seems fitting. Seen many Resorts represented in user names. Not sure how that is bragging.

I think this thread is served it's purpose.

My friend gave me a great idea about tipping.Have your money already in envelopes before you go so that you don't have to try to find ones or fives everyday.

We tipped $5.00 per day and one day we forgot (in such a rush) and we still got great mousekeeping at POR. I felt bad but we were not that messy. I made beds on most days.

Thank you. :thumbsup2 Tipping is a personal decision.

This is true, but just because someone tips more than another doesn't mean that the person is bragging. It all depends on how it is said. My personal decision is that tipping Mousekeeping (or housekeeping at any hotel) is a nice gesture - nothing extravagent - just enough to say thank you.

My question is this: For those that do tip, do people tip daily or at the end of the trip?

Hello Mickey Man !

We try to tip daily - our trips are generally 10 days. Sometime during that stay we will have different mousekeepers and this seems to be the most fair way.

By the way for other postings.....my DH and I are very generous with our gratuities. I used to work for tips so I appreciate the impact. We hope it may mean, perhaps, and extra gallon of milk for their children for example. The $$$ we spend each day on tips is minimal vs. the overall daily cost of a WDW trip....but possibly could mean a great deal MORE to the individual castmember.

This isn't to boast...just our personal opinion.......and I'm sure there are many who will disagree....which is fine.

We have done it both ways. The one time, we knew we had the same lady for the most part. I think she was missing one day midweek. We tipped her all at once, for three rooms, which was 6 adults and 6 kids. We gave her about $120, she about cried! She was the one that said she never gets tipped and why were we tipping her. That was my first tipping experience as well, so made me wonder why I was doing it...since they aren't "supposed" to be. That was at POR.

The other time I remember tipping, we did it daily! Some days it was taken, some days not. That was at AKL I believe.

After reading through a few pages of this thread, I'm seeing that housekeeping only "sometimes" takes tips left for them. This leads me to believe that maybe they are not supposed to be tipped, and those accepting the tips are doing so without approval from their superiors.

I have never been to Disney, so I can't comment on if I have tipped in the past or not. But I just can't imagine if they are allowed to accept tips that anyone would leave the tip in the room. I could see a few people maybe overlooking the tip every once in a while, but it seems from these posts that it's a fairly common occurance.

I will probably ask at the front desk when we check in if we should be tipping housekeeping or not, and I will make my decision to tip off of what they tell me then.

I think a lot of it has to do with how you leave the tip. If it is not clearly marked as a tip, they shouldn't take it. That is why many people who tip use the mousekeeping tip envelopes.

I agree, if it's just some cash left on the nightstand or by the sink, then the staff may not know it is supposed to be a tip.

However, in the many posts that I have read here that say the staff did not take the tip - the money was put into an envelope. I just think it's odd that there would be an envelope there for mousekeeping, and they would leave it if there were allowed to accept tips.

Not that you should compare Disney hotels to other hotels, but I don't think this would happen outside of WDW. I don't think I have ever heard of such a thing, which is what leads me to believe that you are not supposed to tip them.

here is what I do:

First I take an envelope for each day we are going to be there. take last time for instance:

7 days I take:
2 $100.00 bills
2 $50.00 bills
2 $20.00 bills
2 $10.00 bills
2 $5.00 bills
2 $1.00 bills
and 1 envelope with 2 pieces of paper cut to the size of money.

I scramble them all up and leave one each day for the maid...even I dont know whether we are tipping $200.00 OR $0.00 LOL...I consider it a game and always wonder what the maid who gets the 2 pieces of paper thinks LOL

$372.00 is nothing to us so I figure why not have some fun with it.

anyway...it makes it interesting...does anyone else have fun with the maids?

Because of this thread, I email guest relations and asked if tipping was acceptable. The reply (I accidentally deleted the email so I can't quote) was basically that mousekeeping is not considered a tipped position and guests are not encouraged to tip. HOWEVER, if I would like to tip mousekeeping for a job well done, I may certainly do so.

I took it to me that they don't want you tipping, but they'll happily look the other way.

but I gotta say, I want to be a mousekeeper!!!!!

Unlike waitresses who pay taxes on tips whether they actually receive them or not, nobody is looking over the mousekeepers shoulders and tallying the tips.

Figure they do 20 rooms a day minimum? Maybe the bonus kicks in after that. So, say I am a hard worker and I do 25 rooms in one 8 -hour shift. With the bonus, that's about $56. Not so good, right?

But, if just half those people tip me $3 a day, I'm now taking home $92 a day, and $36 of it is tax free unless I decide to be a good girl scout and report it myself.

If 3/4 of the people tip $3, I'm taking home $110 a day...with half of that tax free.

Considering the job doesn't require a degree or special training, that is a pretty good paying position!
