Do you tip for take out?

ETA Bicker, I don't think I've ever seen you give a one word response
Hehe... Simple questions warrant simple answers. The reason why I don't give simple answers to many other questions is because the issues being discussed are not simple, and so simple answers are wrong. :cutie:

As this thread approaches my cut-off limit, I'm wondering if the OP got their answer. Are they a take-out tipper? Is their friend? Has this thread resolved anything for the OP?

Your cut-off limit? :confused3

Many people answered the OP's original question, and it developed into more as does just about every other thread on the Dis. ;)

Yes. My subscription is set up to automatically subscribe to threads when I post. I have a personal limit for threads that reach 100 posts or more as I don't typically participate in clique threads so if a particularly interesting thread gets there, I unsubscribe as a matter of principle.

I've also found in the past that once a thread reaches 100 posts, it's generally turned into a few people arguing amongst themselves and the thread no longer has any value for me as informative input. Those few poster's emotional investment doesn't need to become my drama, so I eliminate it from my subscriptions and move on.

I was hoping the OP would have returned to state whether or not this thread had settled any arguments between her and her friend before I unsubscribed.

Ah well. que sara sara :confused3

if it is something like a small pizza shop, no.

if it is a chain restaurant and the guy at the bar double checks the order for us, then yes.

if we were to do curbside, yes.

depends on what is involved.

Is that even legal? I wouldn't believe it myself and I would be finding another restaurant to eat at.

I believe it - many of these workers can hardly speak English, same with the many Asian workers at all of the nail salons. Heck, you can drive a few miles, and oick up illegal immigrants who gather every morning, looking for day work. These people are desperate for jobs - the businesses know the workers can't do anything legally.

I would think illegal immigrants protesting outside their workplace would draw the kind of attention that neither they nor their employer wants.
Personally, the only thing unfortunate in that situation is that they are here in the first place. I think its sick that they try to guilt people into tipping them when they shouldn't be living in our country or working at that restaurant in the first place, but thats just me and really has nothing to do withhether or not they deserve tips for the service they provide and nothing to do with the OP.

Lol - they're not trying to get people to tip them! They are blocking the entrance of the parking lot, telling people to take their business elsewhere! Man, you really have tipping issues to think that workers would drive away business in an evil plot to get people to tip at buffets!

Excuse me for misunderstanding when you posted that a local chinese restaurant has employees posting they only work on tips and don't get paid anything else in a thread about tipping. :confused3 You could have been more clear about their intentions in your post.

I was shocked at well. They bring drinks, bus the table a few times, and then clean up and set the table again. At one of our local chinese buffets, the employees have signs out outside a few times each year, protesting, claiming they don't get paid at all, and work for just tips.

yes, because my daughter have both worked in restaurants and I know that it isn't just the cooks that have to do work. Cook just cooks it. Then the expo has to check it and then it goes to the take out server who must make sure all the utensils and condiments are added and have to place it in the carry out bag and at some places even taken to you car.

If I go and pick it up then no, I don't tip. But if they deliver it to me then I give them some money. Most places around me add a delivery charge to your bill, but I give them a couple extra bucks.

Yes, I tip 10-20%. The server still has to get your order together. I've found that since I tip, my orders are never messed up and when i call the restuarants, they know our preferneces.

I can see tipping if you frequent the same place often.

Whether it's your local chinese restaurant or a national chain, do you tip when picking up food?

This topic developed into a heated conversation between myself and a friend of 30 years.

Never. If I'm picking it up and they aren't having to deal with me other than to hand it to me and take money... No tip. That's your JOB to hand it to me, it's the minimum expected interaction with me.
Now if it's a buffet or sit-down meal, yes, and I usually tip well. I even tip the sonic drive-in car hops (more on looks than service, since all they are doing is walking out to the car - so cuter = more $).
