Do you tip at "Chilis to Go" type places?

I usually tip a few dollars at those places. Depending on how friendly the staff is.

I usually tip 10%, however, my DH does not.

(If it is nasty weather I will tip them more for coming out in the rain.)

It also includes, taking your order, getting it packed up and then bringing it to your car...so its much more than a 50 foot walk to your car that it involves.

The fifty foot walk isn't worth a tip IMO. Take the walk to my car away and its a drive thru. They take orders and pack it up. Sometimes if the drive thru is packed, they will have you drive to a designated parking spot and will bring your order out when its ready. I wouldn't tip them for doing that at a drive thru window so I wouldn't at a "to go" either. That is generally speaking though. If someone went out of their way for me or the weather was very bad (not usual around here though) then I would consider a tip. But not just for bringing it to my car.

So does the guy/girl at McDonald's and I don't tip him/her (ok not that much of a walk involved.) Do you? (I'm not trying to start an argument - just trying to understand the difference.)

At our Chili's they don't even bring it to your car. You have to go into the smokey bar to pick it up.

Just my experience from working at Chili's years ago. i was a waitress but if the phone was ringing we were required to answer it and take the order. So I only made minimum wage for a waitress. I think at that time it was $2.35. So I had to process the order, get it packed along with all extras in the bag and take it to the customer. This of course took away from my customers that I was waiting on in the dining room. Please tip the take out person. Maybe this has changed and it is a fully paid staff person, but I know a few years ago it was not. That is the difference between places like that and McD's. They pay the staff minimum wage as that is their job. Places like Chili's do not, or at least didn't when I worked there.

I'm also a server that makes 2.13 per hour. So, yes please do tip on to-go orders because it goes under my sales and I have to claim money on it. Usually I agree that 10% is a reasonable tip.

I used to bartend at Applebees back in the day (before I got off my butt and went to grad. school). I was in charge of ALL take-outs, which was a PITB. I would have to leave my bar, my customers, the never ending service bar (the part where you make the drinks for the servers) go to the service line in back, make sure the order is correct, get all the extras together (sauces, dressings, plastic wear, etc.) The to-go orders also counted as my personal sales that I had to pay taxes on as if I had made a tip on it. The computer didn't separate it out from my bar sales. I didn't expect a tip, but I sure did appreciate a buck or two.

Ummm no it doesn't. It involves taking your order, boxing up your order, making sure your order was prepared correctly, and giving you everything you need for your order. The 50ft walk to your car in pouring rain is not an easy thing either as the togo person usually is more cautious about your food not getting wet than themselves.

I'm just curious how this is any different than what they do at Burger King or McDonalds? I'm sorry but I'm not going to tip anybody who is just bringing my order to me.

As a former server, I understand that the person taking the order is responsible for not only packaging the order, but also making sure there are condiments, utensils, ect that go with the entire order. When I was a server, we made $2.13 an hour and had to claim the togo sales as regular sales at a table, so, yes, I would recommend tipping the to go person. I would say that most servers/former servers would agree that 10% is appropriate, as we are not clearing dishes or refilling drinks, but, it still takes away from TIPPING tables to gather an order for a TOGO.

On a side note, if you frequently order to go from a restaurant and do not tip, trust me, the people responsible for gathering those orders remember your name after a while...and I for one would not want to be on the receiving end of an order of someone that I knew I was deliberately stiffing a tip for service on.

Yes, I tip because I assume the person bringing out the order to me is only making $2-$3 an hour. I don't tip McDonald, Burger King, etc. employees because they're getting paid regular minimum wage (or above).
