Do you think this was inapproprate?

Seriously. I asked DH when a pimp had become such a positive role model that it was appropriate to dress like one for Hallowe'en. He said he had no idea. Maybe we're just old fogies and we're not up on all the trends. Maybe being a pimp is something for boys to aspire to now. :rotfl2:

I agree! I was pretty shocked at our school event when one of the teachers let her 9 year old son dress up like a pimp! You would think a teacher would want to be a little more respectable, but I guess I'm just a prude. The kid was wearing a lime green suit with a leopard collar with no shirt underneath and a giant dollar sign gold necklace and a giant leopard pimp hat.

I have problems with derogatory terms regarding women's sexuality being used to describe women.

It's possible I might say that a costume was in bad taste for a school function if I saw a picture. The description of the costume doesn't make it sound all that bad. In any case, I really don't think there are many costumes I'd have a problem with simply because of revealingness, even in a school context. Things like pimp costumes might be problematic for other reasons given a pimp is generally someone who "owns" women bodies and often uses violence to control women. Now of course lots of Halloween costumes involve violent figures--vampires, monsters, Jason, Freddy, etc. I think the difference is something about the reality of a very large problem of violence against women and abuse of women's bodies versus the pretend-ness of other kinds of horror.

I'd say it was inappropriate yes, but probably wouldn't immediatly jump to "Tinkerslut" maybe she didn't quite realize the costume was so revealing :confused3

when did Halloween become about sex anyway? what happened to the good old days of witches and ghosts and little girls in wedding dresses?

Without a picture, I can't really say how I'd feel about it. So, I'll trust the OP's opinion that it was over the top for a school function. However, I would never call someone I've never met a slut. Maybe she did go over the top on her costume, but does that require such nasty comments? Is it really necessary to be so judgemental? I doubt she damaged the psyche of any children. Maybe saying something to the school so they could talk to the mom before next year would be the helpful thing to do. :confused3

psst....... I DID NOT CALL THE WOMAN A SLUT. IF you READ my comments I said I wasn't sure how I felt. Kudos to her for having the confidence or what was she thinking? I said the costume was a slutty rendition of TINK but I did not call the woman a slut. THANK YOU

Some people just love attention and some people just don't have a clue about what's appropriate and what's not. (We all know people like this) She sounds like one of these people!

Shame on her for making it all about her getting attention. She needs to grow up.

I didn't say that you called her that, but others on this thread did. I even said I was giving you the benefit of the doubt that she was dressed inappropriately and acting inappropriately.

IMHO, "Tinkerslut" is a name and not just a description. I see no reason to immediately call people names or put them down. What possible reason is there for this other than to make the person posting feel superior? But then, I see this often on this board of late. Feel free to flame away, but I, personally, am getting real tired of threads started for the sole purpose of making fun or judging others. Why not take the high road in life and try to do something positive. Taking the woman aside to tell her that she was getting a negative reaction to her costume from many would have been helpful. Or, someone could have mentioned it to the school so they could say something. Instead, it is much more fun to come on this board and demean the person behind their back when they have no way to defend themselves.

Too much drama. People need to get a life.

Sounds inappropriate to me. I doubt she "didn't realize it was so revealing" as many on here have said. She must have felt the breeze... I saw a piece of The Today Show yesterday how women's/teens halloween costumes had become quite revealing in the past few years.

And it sounds like tinkerslut is the one with insecurity issues or else she wouldn't have to put herself on display and take the attention away from the kiddos who's parade it was.
BINGO!! this was a parade for the kids to get ooh's and ahh'd over, not for her to show-off. our kids see far more skin on any TV commercial for lingerie, be it victoria's secret or JC Penney.
i think that tink lady needs to get a life! :rotfl:

That's what I think.

"These women" know exactly what they're doing. I've known quite a few. She probably giggled, bent over (acting like she was talking to the kids) threw the fairy dust at the guys (probably giggling here too). have another guess...she probably came up with the idea and enticed her kids into it so she could dress that way. As I type this, the image of the woman I know that is like this, jumps into my mind.

Jealousy has nothing to do with it. It's called maternal instincts. TOTALLY inappropriate for school. But then there always has to be someone :stir:

If her and her two children were Tinkerbell, then maybe she is a Disney fan like us and amongst this very thread.
Nontheless, I want to say that the OP had an opinion and was asking ours. I for one agreed with her, it was a bit inappropriate for a class parade. When an adult costume takes the focus off of the children (which the parade was for), then it becomes an inappropriate costume.
I don't think thats what the intentions of the parent were, but that doesn't change the fact that the lack of better judgement was used on her part. Again, I have to go with the OP on this one.

I think it's funny that people are talking about how revealing that costume might have been, but in reality is might have been just true to the character. Interesting how people overlook just how that character was drawn. People look at her as cute. :confused3

Bottom line IMO is that she couldn't have been any nudity or people would turned her in to the police. Anything short of nudity is not inappropriate IMO, just look at the animated Tink. ;)

There is a little bit of a difference when you are comparing an animated character and a grown woman. While tink is drawn wearing a fairly skimpy costume, there is nothing sexual about her. A grown woman with real body parts in the same costume could be a very different story. I think that it would be possible to dress like tink in an appropriate way. I just don't think it sounds like the lady in question did that!

I have to ask, would you really take the woman aside, a total stranger, and tell her she was not dressed properly? :confused3 Talk about needing a life.

As to the OP, I do not think it was appropriate to dress that way. Mopre importantly why was she trying to upstage the children? makes you wonder

So it's the size of the body parts that makes it sexual? :confused3

IMO you are kidding yourself. The lack of "costume" for the character of Tink speaks for itself no matter who is wearing it.

Just out of curiosity...

OP, would you mind doing a search on google for adult Tink costumes to show us which one it was. I was looking at some, and didn't see any that were too awfully revealing.

My response was to another post that said they would take her aside and tell her she looked like a slut. I would never think of doing such a thing. If, however, someone felt it was their business to judge the look and behavior of this woman, I think it would make more sense to tell her in a nice way that she was drawing the wrong type of attention than the other way.

The point I was trying to make is that I think calling her names on a message board hardly serves a purpose.

It is obvious this is not the opinion of most, so I think I'll bow out of this one.

I saw a kid dressed as a pimp and thought it was a cool idea and would be fun for my DS to wear next year, especially seeing as how it will be our first Halloween in Vegas!! Oops, guess I better go find that bad parent thread... :rolleyes1
