Do you think there are some people who just can't do Atkins?

I have been doing Atkins for 6 weeks. I did fine for 3 weeks and I posted about an episode that I had at almost the 3 week mark where I had big trouble with my electrolytes and dehydration. I went off for almost a week but thought I felt better and could control the carb cravings better on the diet (I felt great the first 3 weeks until the 'episode'.) So, I started again but was adding some carbs in (not doing induction like the first 3 weeks). Saturday, I had to go to the doctor because of low back pain--a kidney infection. He really thought my eating habits may have contributed to it (as I have never had trouble before). Do you think I may not be able to eat this way or am doing something wrong? Everyone else seems to be able to do this diet and lose weight and feel great. This past 6 weeks have me exhausted. :(

Buckalew I could not do Atkins either. I got to about day four and ended up with severe heart palpitations, near fainting and a near migraine headache. I was told to go off it immediately by the doctor I work for. I know most people dont feel great during the first few days but this was serious stuff.

I am back to doing a lifestyle change and Im just counting calories and watching what Im eating. No bad side effects and Im losing weight.

I am so sorry you were so sick on Atkins.

Sorry to hear that you had a bad time with it! I also couldn't do Atkins. I have a real hard time with specific eating styles. I am just doing the moderation eating plan now...won't even call it a diet.

Hope you will be feeling better soon.

Everyone is different Buck. I think your biggest problem is not being able to drink lots of water (or am I misremembering?).

You really need to drink lots of water on any healthy eating plan but especially Atkins.

If you can't do it I'm sure you can find a different eating plan that will work for you.

Atkins works for me and my husband very well, but everyone is different.

Don't feel bad if you can't tolerate Atkins. Find another plan.

I can't do Atkins because of high cholesterol, diabetes and dairy restrictions. I think all plans depend on the individual and there is no plan that works for everyone.
The best thing I did was go to a nutritionist last week. I have been on her plan for me for a week and don't feel like I am missing anything, I feel great and I am losing the last of my pounds. I eat every 2-3 hours, so there is not need to snack outside of my snacks. Usually when I get the urge to snack 'extra' I look at the clock and say, "Well, I only have an hour before I eat...no need to snack". I get to eat anything as long as it is in moderation and within my daily calculations. If you have a lot of restrictions I would recommend seeing a nutritionist.

i second believe's advice. nutritionists are awesome, and often times they are covered on your medical plan; i know they are on ours. :)

Thanks everyone. :) I guess I feel bad about not doing it because DH is doing it and likes it and it was easier for both of us to do it. Also, I did feel good the first 3 weeks.
Good news though, the cipro is working on the infection and I can really tell a difference in my low back! I was beginning to live with the pain. :( Now, if it would just work on the heel spur! LOL

Katholyn, you are right about the water. I have a bad habit of not drinking enough and am really working on it--Atkins or not. :)

After looking at the Atkins Diet on "The View" a few weeks ago, I know I wouldn't be able to "do it." I am a vegetarian and it looks like a lot of Atkins is meats and eggs (both of which I do not eat).

Personally I think it is best to eat a well balanced diet. And most importantly one that you will be able to stick with for the rest of your life.

I also had trouble with Atkins plan. I was weak, had headaches and felt awful. I went to the doctor and found I had blood sugar that went out of whack very easily. In speaking with the doctor she indicated the Carb Addicts plan was a more "balanced" option, and one that more people can live with long term. She also recommended an alternative of following a plan of lean proteins, whole grains(the ingredient list MUST say whole) and all the fruits and veggies you like. Either of these have fewer challenges, and the Personal Trainer I've met with also agreed these plans were more likely to be effective considering the blood sugar problems I have.

Another one who would be unable to do Atkins (I know to not even try). All the foods would set off my IBS, I have to be so careful about eating meat, cheese and most fats.

I agree with what Believe said, nutritionists work. :)
