Do you think gender selection is ethical?

I believe it is unethical. Especially if embryos are created, and then destroyed because they are the "wrong" gender.

My opinion is that God gives you the baby you are meant to have, whether that is through natural conception, IVF, adoption, or whatever.

I have 2 girls. If our third is a girl, and my husband doesn't jump off the tallest building he can find, I'd consider IVF to ensure a boy for the fourth.

I'd rather do that than be like a couple I know with 6 girls, who will continue to have children they can't afford until they get a boy. No thanks.

I don't think anything is wrong with it if sperm is just being sorted. If an embryo is created and tested for gender and then destroyed, that is ethically wrong as something is being created and then destroyed for the sole purpose of gender selection.

I could see myself doing it if I had all boys. It's just sorting out the sperm.

It depends on how it is done I guess. I am really not familiar with the procedures. But I believe life starts at conception, so if embryos are destroyed, then I am completely against it for any reason.

If it is done without destroying life, I would be interested (though I could never afford it). I have 2 wonderful little boys. For both pregnancies I wished and wished for girls. God knew better and blessed me with my boys that I would not trade for anything. I am 99% sure I am done having children, though I would really LOVE to have a girl. I am sure if I ever got pregnant again, I would wish for a girl but love my baby no matter what just as I already have.

If someone is going to use scientific procedures like IVF anyway, I don't see anything less ethical about taking it one step further and choosing the sex.

I am a firm believer that embryos, wombs and anthing associated with them is strictly between the woman, the male involved (usually), the doctor and if a believer, their God. If they are comfortable with it, then they should be able to gender select with sperm selection or with testing embryos.

Whether I think it it is ethical or not only concerns me and what I would do with my body.

We thought about using low tech methods (a la the book "Choosing the sex of your baby) when trying for our second and third children. It involves eating certain foods and timing your "activities" around ovulation, etc. But we ran into two issues:

1. When it came down to it, we couldn't figure out which gender we wanted to try for!

2. It just felt unethical to us in the end.

We have 2 darling girls and are now expecting our third, by the way. We are THRILLED!

And by the way, if God sent me an unhealthy baby I'd want him or her just as much.

I don't think it's ethical, and I wouldn't do it myself, but I think everyone has a right to do it if they want.

No, I would not choose the gender of my children, even if given the choice.

For me - yes - but mores are personal and this is not the type of thing that I would support being legislated.

While some do, not everyone who does IVF discards or destroys the embryos they create. For many, it's an intensely important issue when undergoing procedures like these, even though some may lead us to believe otherwise.

Admittedly, some believe that even creating the embryos outside the womb is wrong.

People really have to know about the procedures and examine their own hearts when making these choices. Having to actually decide for yourself is a lot different than thinking hypothetically about what you might do.

;) Those natural low tech methods DON'T work! Trust me, DH and I tried it.

I wouldn't do it, it is a bit too close to playing God for me but I don't think it is unethical in the broadest sense of the term.

The thing that would scare me is that I would select a gender and then have a child with a birth defect or something wrong with him/her. I'd always have the doubt in the back of my mind that had I just let nature select it I'd have had a healthy kid.

I wouldn't judge others for doing it though, that is just me.

Is it ethical? Yes.

Do I like the idea? No.
